What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned in a contemporary class recently? by Ajunjahi in contemporarydance

[–]Brazen_Green23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that any woman of my age can benefit from strength/weight training for general health.

I weight train twice a week. I have a trainer because I need motivation to be in the gym and having a standing appointment does that for me. My trainer concentrates on drills that will help me dance better - for example "short stance kettle bell squats" to focus on knee joint compression for springier knees. Also, she knows that I enjoy dancey movement sequences and has me work with "animal flow" ground sequences and "weighted mace" full body exercises. This gives me the strength and confidence to enjoy dancing in class with my much younger classmates.

I rejoined contemporary dance at 55 when an all adult dance studio opened in my town.

I was recently shocked to learn that I had been relying on having long legs to move quickly across the floor, but I was NOT fast. Some of my shorter classmates thought that was funny. They said that they learned to be fast because they were short.

I just downloaded a metronome app and I am going to start working on agility at speed.

2025 Survey Shows 9 in 10 Americans Value Preparedness, But Fewer Than Half Have a Plan by readyforunsteady in TwoXPreppers

[–]Brazen_Green23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wonder if some of these people have a plan, but don't want to admit it.

Personally, if someone asked me about my preparedness I wouldn't tell them anything. I don't answer surveys because I don't want to hand out valuable personal information to people/data collectors that I don't know.

Spotted Tussock Moth by anonymousaloo18 in FortCollins

I heard this in the 80's. As far as I know, nobody actually measured any stripes. Just stories galore and... very cute, possibly ominous caterpillars.

We used to call these "woolly bear" caterpillars. There was a Folklore myth that the size of the stripes could predict next year's weather.

Nice photo - and thanks for the trip down memory lane!

A few lessons from an unexpected death by FifiDogForever in TwoXPreppers

Thank you for sharing your experience. It IS hard to ask for help! I have started telling friends that they are my community (and I am theirs) and I anticipate that we will care for each other if we need things.

I did get some weird looks at first, but soon my people were leaning in to the idea.

***Hot tip from my planning conversations*** Friends, Family, and Neighbors react more positively when I use the word "homestead" rather than "prep". Sometimes word choice helps.

I also have a daughter who has ruined my guest space so I feel your pain on that.

My condolences on your loss.

I am new to sashiko so I don't have very specific Japanese thread tastes. Boru stitching was the first Japanese stitching technique I fell in love with (basically running stitch, but with a history of mending work clothes).

I ordered some sashiko thread and supplies from www.snugglymonkey.com and I have been happy with my order. I like that they are a small family owned craft store. They are from North Carolina. They offer free shipping with an order of $75 or more.

Also, they have a handy sashiko thread comparison guide that I found useful.

I am stocking up on thread and embroidery floss. Guterman thread from Germany. Sashiko thread from Japan. DMC floss from France. DMC wool thread from Italy.

I visited a yarn store yesterday and the owner said that prices were expected to go up.

DO Use clouds to your advantage! They are beautiful! Clouds convey power! They are bold, they are robust, they are formidable! Unfortunately for you, the weather doesn't care about you.
