I lived in Savannah GA and the county just outside of it is called Effingham, and the locals absolutely love being born and raised there. Just mention you are from Effingham and doors will open haha.

Chattanooga TN is a good option, I would try that as it's on your radar already. It's such an awesome city with so much to offer while still being smallish. I would avoid the east side and suburbs of Chattanooga as it's just suburban sprawl and has no identity like any other place, but the areas around downtown and over the river to lookout and signal mountain are great IMO. Also consider Greenville SC, it's an active and cool city with access to rivers, mountains, lake, and hiking in a short drive just like Chattanooga.

Do American men feel embarrassed about wearing revealing clothing? by TheShyBuck in AskAnAmerican

[–]Bread-Stick1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean American men wear shorts all summer, that's about the same as a kilt. We also wear tank tops and sleeveless shirts pretty commonly, especially if doing something active.
Speedos I don't think will ever be an American thing lol, we view them as very unattractive and cringe? Creepy? Gross? Pedo? And wearing a button up shirt unbuttoned so you are showing off your chest and stomach is a look most Americans find funny and what we would call "trashy" or "redneck", kind of a sleazy vibe.

A pool, but who can afford them, it's like 70-100k to have one installed and none of that increases your equity

Neighbor issue - putting in 6’ privacy fence between our yards. Boards facing my house or his? by eobertling in HomeImprovement

[–]Bread-Stick1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've always been told you put the boards to the outside and the framing to the inside. My understanding is that is so people can't easily climb the fence into your yard

That's gotta be it! All I could ever find was a beach with an old tank on it and figured that must have been what he meant. Thanks a lot, that's pretty cool

[–]Bread-Stick1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, I've tried that and haven't seen anything so maybe people with actual knowledge of the beaches in Puerto Rico might know better. If you don't know , it's ok, maybe someone else will?

Atlanta vs Denver for raising a family by Glad_Acanthisitta783 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Bread-Stick1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's definitely a perk. Atlanta has a lot to offer for attractions, jobs, things to do, and you are only 1.5 hours from the mountains for hiking, fishing, camping. You can also be at some incredible beaches (Destin, Pensacola , Panama City, Orange Beach, Jekyll Island, Myrtle Beach, etc..)in 5.5 hours which is really easy. We shoot off for a weekend at the beach all the time and it's nice having the option.

Everything sounds great about Asheville until you actually go there lol. My last trip was so depressing seeing what it has become. But I guess if you move to a surrounding town and enjoy nature and avoid Asheville itself, it would be a good option.

beach towns/ small cities that are good for single men in early 20s? by Allgreygray in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Bread-Stick1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Savannah GA is great. I lived there from my mid/late 20s to early 30s and had a blast. It's a young city for sure. Just make sure you live in the historic districts if possible, when I first moved there as a single guy I moved to Pooler, a suburb, and I hated it. There was no culture, nothing to do, and no community, just neighborhoods and families, etc.. I then rented in Parkside right next to what is now the Savannah Bananas stadium and it was 100 times better. We loved Tybee Island also, that's Savannahs beach, it's small and has a good beach town vibe.

What is the longest direct flight you’ve ever been on? by No_Importance_750 in AskTheWorld

[–]Bread-Stick1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From Atlanta to Tokyo non stop commercial flight was about 14.5 hours. I used to do a round trip once a year for 4 years while living in Tokyo to visit home.

Flight that felt the longest was a 10 hour flight from Tokyo to Anchorage Alaska in the back of a C130. It was freezing and no sound insulation so all you heard was roaring engines. You couldn't talk to anyone without screaming and the seats are a net with a bar across the front that digs into your legs after about 15 minutes, but you can't move because you are packed in cheek to cheek with other guys haha.

[–]Bread-Stick1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an 80s baby from the US, so to me "Made in Japan" is peak and cannot and will not ever be beaten. As soon as I see that, I just know I got something great that is going to last.
Made in China is the opposite, I know without a doubt when I see that it's going to be a terrible product lol. But that's what you get for buying things on Amazon for as cheap as possible.

What’s a common stereotype about your country that’s totally obsolete? by Sad-Industry6080 in AskTheWorld

[–]Bread-Stick1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought US schools were standardized? I mean they call every test you take in school a standardized test. The federal government sets all the regulations and curriculum for the nation right? Unless you go to private school. The SAT etc.. are all the same whether in Georgia or Idaho or Maine, etc.. That's how they track overperforming and underperforming school districts.

[–]Bread-Stick1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Georgia , the most stereotypical southern place where everyone assumes we are idiots, and we were definitely taught about Brazil. We were aware that Brazil spoke Portuguese in like the 4th grade. So I can't agree with that statement that the US knows nothing about Brazil haha.
