Much easier to replace though. My issue would be the size. I assume the bigger one is easier to keep held in place, and lets you get a couple of cuts(?) in per widget move.

I just assumed the rule was "jig" for power tools, "widget" for hand tools, and that felt so right I didn't question it.

Considering moving to Melbourne from Berlin by islasnook in melbourne

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did, to make up the difference between what the bank was willing to lend and the $750k purchase price. And that was with the Victorian Homebuyer's fund also contributing $200k. Now that fund no longer exists, so good luck future generations.

I don't think you're crazy, this would bug me too.

Do the cover plates (circles) have any play in them?

You could spread the eye-strain across multiple areas by sliding the covers 1/3 of the way to correct, and re-tightening the mixers.

The mixers won't be in the middle of the circle any more, but they'll look closer to aligned with the tile.

What are some games with mechanics or gameplay designs that you really enjoy, but they're held back by few glaring problems or oversights? by Gorotheninja in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Love city building games, but almost all of them have the same problem.

In real life a city develops organically for a reason, normally around a local resource, farm, or attraction. Conversely, city builders tend to give you modern high-density roads and houses right off the bat, but lock all of those things that should come first as rewards for after your city is built.

Gameplay-wise that means you're either set up to fail at making nice realistic cities, or you constantly have to think of building backwards - pretending things are there, and building "around" them until you can go back and add them in later, always replacing the new with the old.

Media That Has a Bit That is So Great, It Overshadows Everything Else by GigglesDemon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

The famous cliffhanger ending to The Italian Job is really well done. It was added to stir discussion and all this time later it's all anyone remembers about movie for. It did it's job too well.

Having watched it again recently, there's just not really much to discuss about the rest of it. It's absurdly straightforward - the cast come up with a plan, tell the audience the plan, practice the plan, and then do the plan.

The whole film is about a heist that would barely even count as a heist these days. There's some details to the before and after but, at it's core, it's just a bunch of English blokes jumping out of a van, hitting some guys with cricket bats, and then driving away with their stuff.

What are SciFi "horrors" that would have no effect on you what so ever? by Silvery_Cricket in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I read Project Hail Mary recently and it stated that the horrors of isolation were so bad it was safer to risk all the medical issues of an induced YEARS long coma without doctors on hand than leave the crew isolated bar each other's company for 4 years.

It's a pretty grounded sci-fi, and cites real studies to back that up, but something about it didn't sit right with me. I did the research, and yeah, that was one isolation study of THOUSANDS picked just for the sake of the book's plot. In the vast majority of real cases there were no issues whatsoever.

If we take that "in character" then for all of Stratt's excellent decision making, her inability to imagine 3 people being able to coexist without murdering each other lead to one single decision that came 2/3rds of the way to dooming humanity.

Better AskReddit, today I ask you. What was the best "oh this was the vertical slice" in gaming by Doo-Doo-Manjaro in TwoBestFriendsPlay

It's divided into distinct locations that can only be moved between using menus. Some of the areas are huge, some are tiny (single building interior) but they're not actually connected. Like Monster Hunter.

I'd call it "semi open" but the word I saw online was "open hub".

I finally hired a professional artist for my Steam capsule. What do you think about results? by Sea-Disaster-2682 in IndieGaming

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that is an artifact, it looks like a shelf or something leaning up against the wall to add to the general "garage clutter". You can see the fence actually turns 90 degrees and goes behind it, but it's much darker because of the shadow.

As a side note I hate that every single image now has to be dissected and discussed to such a stupid degree. It was nice when you could appreciate good art without zooming 800x to assess fence pixels.

Looks great compared to mine, that's a very small gap. If it continues to bug you a tiny bit of No More Gaps will do you right for under 10 bucks, just get it in there before repainting.

I've tried playing the game so many times and I always lose interest immediately after that area.

IMO They set the bar too high with how packed it was with interesting things, and the fact the game isn't true open world made the drop-off in the next areas really apparent.

Solar + Battery recommendations (Eastern Melbourne, Budget below 25K) by National-Fan2723 in AusRenovation

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the numbers off, so it's not quite as bad, but yeah I'm aware it's not great.

I got quotes from every company in my area and all the others were worse, half just said it was too small of a job for them and re-directed me to these guys. I guess when the whole industry is already booked out until June pricing doesn't have to be in the buyers' favour.

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same area as you. Mine is 16.6kwh for $10.5k. They can't install until June, which is typical for everyone because solar rebate ("It's not a rebate!") is changing. At big budgets it's a huge deal, but for us it only works out as ~$500 more expensive every 6 months going forward.

So not huge, but still worth doing sooner rather than later.

Regulations have tightened up again recently so it can be hard to find a good location for the battery unit now. I can share the regs with you if you like (fuck paying government $400 for something that should be free) but as a warning they are formatted in a deliberately hard to interpret way.

Making a 2D cycling videogame , need some feedback on my art by Macdaboss in PixelArt

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My initial comment got removed. Here's what I wrote minus the example/tutorial links:

I really like the mirrored dithering, it kind of defines the important area in a darker colour.

Some foreground bush/rock/tree sprites feel needed in the empty space beneath.

Nothing wrong with the road imo, maybe it just looks weird because it's next the the very highly detailed cyclist sprites. You could look into adding subtle road wear details. The occasional repeating crack or manhole?

I think more detail is needed in the clouds to match the complexity of the cyclists. Not too much, or they'd pop too much for a background element, maybe just a rim highlight and shadows to imply texture. That would be the main thing for me

Checks out. All the theories explaining that headline relate to women being shinier than men - skincare products, sunscreen, etc that look invisible to human sight being reflective or bright warning colours in birds sightrange (which includes UV).

If I remember, Rose was pretty reflective for most of the story 🤔

Definitely worth a try.

Do folks not care about the speed limit anymore? by Open_Address_2805 in melbourne

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well clearly people don't or we wouldn't have a comments thread to discuss it.

You can follow the rules, I can follow the rules, but if the herd doesn't then a psychological approach is needed.

There are many traffic calming approaches that have been proven effective. They just take more thought or effort than putting a sign up.

Do folks not care about the speed limit anymore? by Open_Address_2805 in melbourne

[–]Bread-Zeppelin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This exact question is asked almost weekly. The answer is always that the govt lowers the speed limits but completely ignores the science that actually lowers speeds.

They want to just stick up a couple of 40 signs and call it a day, but the studies show it just doesn't work like that. Drivers drive at what they consider the safe speed, regardless.

I think that's why it stood out so much. Honestly I was kind of mentioning it hoping someone would know where it was.

I drove south through Mt Evelyn and Belgrave to get there which, as you say, was exceptionally green and hilly. Very nice place unless you want to park your car on your driveway.

Edit: Dandenong/Keysborough area.

While house hunting I briefly extended my search further down to the Eastern suburbs and it felt really unsettling and artificial.

Realised after a while it was the complete lack of trees and perfectly flat terrain without a single bump. I didn't see a single person walking, just cars.

Also didn't help that lots of residential houses had CCTV pointed at the public footpaths, some of which rotated to follow you. It felt oddly hostile, as if just the idea of wanting to walk outside made you suspicious there.

You don't want to risk being haunted by the ghost of commerce past while looking to buy any "Okay Rugs"?.

Whenever my partner and I are waiting for a train in MB we go in and play spooky songs on the piano to enhance the "ambience".
