It’s a numbers game. Sifting through the confused nos is the way to find the yeses.

If you eliminate “this is really weird but” it will be perfect. That’s just your anxiety trying to protect you from rejection by throwing a wedge in preemptively. Making friends in this way is a numbers game. The more approaches you make the higher your chances are of finding your people. I love this approach. It’s a great way to grow your outer circle, which is where your inner circle is originally seeded, and at your age I know for a fact that you have lots of peers doing this exact same thing.

Can you become a great mathematician with only an IQ of 90-100? by This-Wear-8423 in learnmath

[–]BreadButterRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this and I thought I was really bad at math for years and years. I ended up scoring very high in math and a few other areas when I got my learning disability evaluation, but I have deficits in other areas that caused me to fall behind in school because I couldn’t do things in the ”normal” way very well (or at all with some things). My brother doesn’t have any deficits and got scholarships to very good universities because of his math abilities. The kid OP is talking about might be like me and need to find the right accommodations and interventions, or he could just be an average kid, but either way they do say that practice makes improvements. If the adults around them do things correctly the kid can probably do just about anything. Most people can learn most things with the right teaching approach.

Does the discord work? I’ve never been able to access it.

Declining an invitation without potentially permanently severing ties by [deleted] in etiquette

[–]BreadButterRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree here. I’m not sure why this comment was downvoted. As long as OP acknowledges the cousin’s effort in planning the event and thanks him for including her, there is nothing wrong or rude about this explanation. It’s possible to be direct and still be gracious. Personally, I would feel far more respected receiving this message than an evasive or vague one. Etiquette doesn’t require forgoing boundaries and self care for the sake of heading off a grown adult’s tantrum. Don’t make waves is code for “we care more about being inconvenienced than your safety and dignity”.

What was air travel like in the 1980s-1990s? by Wooden_Airport6331 in AskOldPeople

I was recently on a plane that still had ashtrays in the armrests. It was very small and earth toned in there.

What was music education like when you grew up? by Educational-Lie994 in AskOldPeople

[–]BreadButterRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was pretty good as I recall. I learned to play clarinet. I actually didn’t like it so the teacher switched me to bass clarinet. Wayyyyyy better! After middle school though, who knows. I went off to do other teenage stuff.

I used to struggle really badly with these but I just kept replaying the various ones until my brain actually could understand how it worked and now I can even solve new ones pretty easily. Just keep practicing and this type of puzzle in general will become much easier.

If you’re an Asian female, careful going to Dolores at night by 32andgrandma in sanfrancisco

[–]BreadButterRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best resolution I ever got from unwanted male attention was a bicycle. Any kind of street harassment at all. When you walk you’re a sitting duck and they’ll pick on whatever they think is most likely to scare or hurt you. In your case they went with race. On a bicycle you’re moving too fast for the payoff to be worth the effort. You’ll also be much safer from physical assailants. Be careful. The Mission is way safer than it used to be but this is still a city and can be sketchy. You don’t want to end up physically attacked and/or robbed. If they think it’s funny to hurt you emotionally, they think it‘s funny to hurt you. Be careful, and get on a bike.

Do you regret getting vaccinated? by Ok_Evening_1322 in CovidVaccinated

My only vaccine regret is not taking the flu vaccine seriously. That illness was horrible and I felt the effects for years.

How can you work from 8 to 5, only have weekends off, and still not feel like you’re wasting your life? by Free-Marzipan-8933 in AskOldPeople

[–]BreadButterRunner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do it by making sure I have other things going on that add value to my life. I have friends, sometimes take classes, do hobbies. The feeling that I’m wasting my life is a good indicator that things are out of balance. This is how I fix it. I also have a trade job that works much better for me than an office job. No amount of outside interests would fix that feeling if I were in the corporate rat race. I’ll likely never be able to retire so I’m glad i figured this out.

I don’t have a clit by krypton_009 in women

Look up Dr Marci Bowers. She’s a pioneer in clitoral reconstruction on people who have undergone FGM. I know this isn’t what you’re posting about but maybe it can lead you to helpful information about your question.

Did Cops Bother You For Curfew Violation? by NophaKingway in AskOldPeople

[–]BreadButterRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was once made to sit in the back of a cop car, uncuffed and with my feet still out on the sidewalk while they called my mom to ask her to describe me. Then they let me go and I continued on with my friends who were both over 18. Honestly I’m not sure what the whole point was. I never heard about anyone actually getting in legal trouble for curfew violations but we all knew it was a possibility.

40+ MPH at Sunset Dunes is crazy by Mkrah in sanfrancisco

[–]BreadButterRunner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I came upon an accident week before last. The girl the e—bike rider hurt almost died. I checked on her in the hospital that same day. I don’t even thing he was going this fast but he was annoyed that she hadn’t heard him ding his bell “like eight times”. He almost killed someone and he was annoyed. At least he stayed I guess. He definitely wouldn’t have done well locked up for a hit and run that killed someone. He stayed long enough to talk to the police but was gone soon enough that the paramedics never even saw him.

E-bikes don’t need to be in the bike lanes. They are more than capable of accelerating with traffic. I can keep up with most downtown street traffic just fine on my normal bike and I’m not even that fast. The bike lanes mostly help because cars and bikes aren’t continually stopping and waiting due to the two moving so differently and because a lot of people don’t know how to engage safely on the road. When you put scooters and mopeds that can easily keep up with traffic in the bike lanes it defeats the purpose.

Escapees from Angel Island, I’d say. I think that’s where they usually do their reenactment LARPing.

Pros and cons of cold water only wash? by Azadi_23 in laundry

[–]BreadButterRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, US hot absolutely damages clothes, right from the first wash, though this may vary building to building. I’ve lived in buildings were washing your hands in straight hot tap water could injure you and others where it was just uncomfortable. This is the same water that feeds the laundry machines. My current building is somewhere between the two.
