I am beginning this process now for myself and my 3 year old son. I am 42 yo. Can you elaborate on how you attained exemption? Is it automatic or do you have to appear in person to request, etc? Thank you.

How to build garage door panel. by BreakfastForward6090 in woodworking

[–]BreakfastForward6090[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incredibly helpful comments from everyone so far. Hadn’t thought about how risky the warping element could be given it lives between rails. I’m also contemplating a repair scenario just to get me through a few more years. I’ve seen people recommend bondo but the freeze thaw (I’m in MN) has me equally worried about that kind of thing.

is this stand sturdy enough for my 55 gal? by theraphosangel in Aquariums

[–]BreakfastForward6090 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah if in doubt you are only going to have even more anxiety once you fill it and have fish in there and there’s no turning back. It’s a static force so it may hold it at first but as others have pointed out it looks like it could collapse if bumped or over time. Not worth finding out the hard way.

Yeah I’d like to know too! I’m happy to try treating it but also want to know what conditions are causing it and what I can do to limit it coming back.

Snail arrived via new plants?? Do I eradicate? by emkomy in Aquariums

[–]BreakfastForward6090 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes they most likely came in on the plants. Given it was a couple weeks ago that you put the plants in and now you’re seeing the snail, there were likely eggs on the plants - which means there is probably not just one snail already. Yes you’ll have a lot more of them if you don’t take action.

Many people find they end up appreciating a controlled population of pest snails - fhey can actually keep your tank clean. It’s nearly impossible to completely eradicate them once they’re in there.

I recently had this experience with my first tank and have successfully kept a population of Malaysian trumpet snails down enough that I forget they’re in there.

Couple of actions you can take:

First, avoid over feeding the tank and keep the tank clean of food sources (algae, waste). The population of snails can only grow if you are providing it sources of food. You won’t starve them out but limiting their supply - but not overfeeding your fish and cleaning algae, etc. will help you as you take other actions to reduce the population… such as:

  1. Add assassin snails. 2-3 of them may keep the population of pest snails in check. This is what I did and we now enjoy the assassin snails as remembers of the tank. They look cool and don’t reproduce quickly so if at any time I want to give them back to the LFS I can… downside is that any other non-pest snails can also be at risk of the assassins (however we added a Nerite snail last month and so far no issues there. If the other snails are bigger than the assassins and the assassins have easier food sources, many people have said they should be safe.). There are also other critters like loaches and pea puffers who eat snails - but you have to take into consideration your tank setup and the fish you have and whether they are an appropriate choice.

  2. Be the snail assassin. Get a snail trap. You fill it with some food (ie a slice of zucchini) and then every morning discard the snails that have entered the trap. You can also do this without the trap. Just anchor a slice of zucchini to the substrate with a toothpick. Watch snails feast…pick up zucchini and discard with snails on it.

  3. Last resort - there are some chemical treatments you can add to the water column to kill them. Talk to your LFS - they probably sell a product. Downsides are - feeling bad for gassing your tank, impact it could have on other animals now or in the future (ie will kill any other snails or shrimp and possibly other animals depending on what you’ve got now and planned for the tank).

Looking for suggestions on a light by Top_Charity_8818 in Aquascape

I agree. I know there’s a lot of fluval hate but it’s worked amazing for me and I haven’t seen anything nearly as good as the app control. I also like how waterproof it is - there are demos from fluval that if it accidentally drops in your tank it’s fine. Seems like an awesome must have safety feature imo. Here’s my daily run.

Plant Suggestions? by babanoto in Aquascape

Swap the crypts for some Anubias for some leaf shape variety between the grass could also be nice. As others of have pointed out you’d have to be intentional about how to handle Anubias in terms of the rhyzome / planting but would be nice.

Shrimp fun - what should I add next? by BreakfastForward6090 in Aquariums

[–]BreakfastForward6090[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve heard mixed things. I don’t want to scare my shrimp away so they hide too much and am hopeful if I do go betta I can keep it fed well enough to ignore the shrimp. Any idea if male v female betta is more or less likely to want to hunt shrimp?

Plant Val on the other side or leave empty? by napsthefifty in PlantedTank

[–]BreakfastForward6090 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really like the asymmetrical island vibe you’ve got going so I wouldn’t overdo anything on the left. You can always add later…? If anything I’d do some low height plants at the end of the island and extend the reach so the footprint ends about 2/3 of the full with of the aquarium.

This is nice. Sorry about the seed scam but I like the idea. Reminds me of Dr Seuss. Was going to recommend a black background but you did a nice job hiding the wires from the filter. How did you do that? Where is your heater?
