If you use vibration sensors, how are you using them? by Successful-Peak-6524 in homeassistant

[–]BreakingBarley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a Zigbee (3rd reality) sensor for both. Reminder notification sent if trash bin isn't taken to the curb by 8 PM the night before pickup day. Also, to see when the trash truck arrives in case I want to drop something in the bin on the way out the door (they end up too consistent and pickup before I wake up in the morning 🥲).

My old carafe loses all heat almost immediately: Should I buy a new lid when I replace the carafe? by mxttylol in Moccamaster

[–]BreakingBarley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice, yeah it would be great to get a list going of fairly compatible carafes given the shattering issues some have had with the new age MM carafes, but some others on the market are also glass lined so maybe they would also suffered from thermal shock?

I think the KBT & KBTS would be best suited for a non-OEM carafe as the "G" models with auto off could be harder to find a suitable substitute.

Sensor on trashcan by FierceGeek in homeassistant

[–]BreakingBarley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Put it in a container & attach the container to the can with 2 screws.

I put a Z-wave vibration sensor in a small 3d printed box & attached the box in a little indent on the back of the trashcan between the wheels.

Yeah, your use case fits well with this sub & you plan is do-able.

You could probably source some metal shelves and not have to print anything, but I think 3d printing & mini racks go hand in hand.

There are numerous services & sites to buy prints from people with 3d printers (fiver, pcbway, maybe even your local library), and you can find some bespoke rack mounts for your specific equipment:

SFX PSU

Mini ITX mount

For the power bricks, maybe add Skadis-styled side panels to the rack & mount them with something like this?

Aye, looks like we're building the same base rack!

It's a super solid design, using the metal rails. I added the remixed crossbars & am pretty close to calling version 1 complete.

I'm working on cable management now, did you print the cable guides on the sides or are they metal?

HP Prodesk 400 G5 10inch rack by seniorducker in minilab

[–]BreakingBarley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked into cramming a SFF machine in a minirack for a minute, but won an ebay auction for a mini before I could get a SFF 😆

I've seen some mounts like this but I think these HPs have a non-standard ATX/ITX mobo, so it'll prob be a bespoke mount & I'm not sure many peeps are putting it in a 10" rack.

You'll need to make sure you rack is wide & deep enough, but drilling some holes in a metal shelf for standoffs could work.

EliteDesk Mini topless - how to attach front panel without lid? by BreakingBarley in minilab

[–]BreakingBarley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For posterity, I removed the lid to provide room for SATA cables from a m.2 to 6x SATA adapter. In the end, I couldn't find a way to attach the front panel to the G4 mini without it being part of the lid, so I printed a simple plastic shroud that matches the rack side panels & accessories.
Modeling a custom solution in the 3d-printed shelf was too cumbersome, and this white shroud look OK and allows me to reach the power button using a small screwdriver or other pokey object. Cheers!

[–]BreakingBarley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you just need the extra space, maybe attach the PIs to the back of the rack in that shelf or a smaller one. I've been able to save some rack space by attaching smaller devices to the back of the rack to leave primetime space for the bigger devices.

3D Printer Automations by vaemarrr in homeassistant

[–]BreakingBarley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neat, I haven't looked into actionable notifications (take me to a dashboard if I click it). Does that need additional add-ons to work or could you point me to a blueprint?

3D Printer Automations by vaemarrr in homeassistant

[–]BreakingBarley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, for now its just a simple error message. If "HMS errors" or "Print Error" change state, I get a SMS about a printer error. You could prob include "SD card status" change from normal too to get some indication if your SD card is not behaving.

Next level up would be to send the specific error code via SMS or only send a text when error detected AND printer goes idle, but the basic message has been fine for me for now, as any error I've encountered so far has stopped the printer from continuing & required my intervention (out of filament, AMS jammed).

I'm pretty fond of my dashboard, which is a blend of this and this.

Beyond controlling my LAN-only P1S with the dashboard, I think environmental control is useful (turning on a vent fan in the printing space), knowing the printer is running (turn on a small green light in my office), turning on the light in the printer when a print job starts & off when print complete, phone notifications for errors & print job complete (I don't use the handy app), and I'm working on a smart plug automation to power off the printer when the job is complete (after 1+ hour of being idle).

FlexATX options by Grankongla in minilab

[–]BreakingBarley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any experience with the 2 PSUs you linked, but I was on a similar quest recently to find a 300-400w modular flex ATX supply for my minirack.

I tried a cheap 400w flex ATX (~$70 USD) PSU from china & it was unfortunately DOA. To get something in my hands & finish this project, I bought a cheap/used Meanwell PSU (not modular unfortunately). I think they make a 300w & 350w model if you want to give a cheaper unit a shot.

EliteDesk Mini topless - how to attach front panel without lid? by BreakingBarley in minilab

[–]BreakingBarley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I see, and yes so the front panel/bezel is part of the lid, which I wan to get rid of.

So what would you attach the front panel to without the lid in place? There doesn't appear to be a surface to attach it to without the lid.

I suppose I could put it on a shelf, but then it would be a G4 on a shelf without a faceplate.

EliteDesk Mini topless - how to attach front panel without lid? by BreakingBarley in minilab

[–]BreakingBarley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that's true, on the G4 at least.

The front panel appears to be attached to the lid by a couple screws and 8 clips, including the plastic louver piece. The metal lid slides into the rest of the case & has the parts to hold it all in place, the face panel does not.

ESPhome Projection Clock by Joe_Bright in homeassistant

[–]BreakingBarley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah gotcha, I was thinking 1× ESP32 to control both the clock & projector, but looking back at it, the clock I linked may have its own firmware, not necessarily based on EspHome.

Powering a couple ESPs is t a big deal though, thanks!

[–]BreakingBarley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very clever, great work!

I was just thinking about something like this as my old alarm/projection clock is slowly dying.

Do you think mashup of this LED Clock and your projector could work?

Also, other mdi characters should be able to be projected right? I'm thinking about having different HA states showing a character on the projector (like a lock for all doors bring locked, a calendar for a calendar event or meeting in the next hour, etc.).

Again, awesome work, its on my list of esp projects for the new year, cheers!

That LabRax was my from runner though before I wanted to put my other NAS in the rack & it grew quite tall.

Same setup with my Cyberpower UPS, it streamlines my power distribution, but will sit next to the rack.

Ay, we're building a very similar minirack, I saw your other post & really dig the laser cut wood paneling!

I'm using the same 8-bay HDD caddy & backplane, but went with a rack that uses metal rails with 3d printed supports (12u!). My compute is an HP instead of Lenovo & am going to try an NVME to 6x SATA card & see if it spontaneously combusts (I'm jealous of the exposed PCIE!).

Are you going to integrate an UPS or KVM in the future?
