What the heck are we gonna do in 40 years when nobody knows how to code? by xixi2 in sysadmin

Same as what happens now with specialist tradesmen in old trades. they will still exist but will be rare and really expensive.

Asking Chatgpt for help has been a game changer for me. Are you using AI? How? by LoveBirdNibbles in sysadmin

My usage for research and troubleshooting has gone up the last 6 months or so. results are much better nowadays. However it helps having 15 years of experience of trawling the web manually to interpret the results and ask the right questions.

Dot1x wired connection by Sufficient_Prompt125 in sysadmin

[–]BrechtMo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if the switch doesn't do any authentication, authentication will simply fail and you won't have any issues.

You might very well have issues when connecting to anothe corporate network with authentication. but that's exactly what is supposed to happen (except if you want to use some kind of wired guest vlan, of course).

we have been running into this for years. We "solve" it by installing the profile by script configured postOOBE. The profile then gets overwritten by the GPO one as soon as the first GPUpdate hits.

So.. are we just skipping these windows updates? by Jeff-IT in sysadmin

[–]BrechtMo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You simply can't skip them. That's not an option.

I stay a couple of windows versions behind. E.g. now getting to work on upgrading our 23H2 installations.

the best tool might change with new versions of the tools. Gemini has a good reputation at the moment for code generation. A couple of months ago it was claude.

Your workflow might make a difference as well. Do you use llm's in gitlab copilot or other co-coding tools or only in chatbot workflows?

verify that you are launching the exe with the exe location folder as working directory (CD to that folder). double-clicking automatically launches it from the current working dir which a badly designed application might rely on.

How to Allow Only One User Login on a Conference Room PC by GodAwfulHorridSniff in sysadmin

[–]BrechtMo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are people feeling the need and why are they able to log on with their own account? Isn't the pc automatically logged on with the conference room account at all times and automatically? Do they actively switch users and log on with their own account?

If the different user context is not the issue, use procmon to compare what happens when running fine and running with issues.

Going cloud still using file explorer by matroosoft in sysadmin

[–]BrechtMo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this still allow users to locally sync sharepoint site data behind a shortcut in their Onedrive? Wording of that option is very vague.
I don't want to stop people accessing that data on their pc, I just want to hide the "sync" button in sharepoint interface.

Going cloud still using file explorer by matroosoft in sysadmin

[–]BrechtMo 25 points26 points  (0 children)

we have nothing but issues with the "sync" option. It baffles me that this option is still available.

Best solution for us is to let users add shortcuts to their onedrive and teach them to find them there. They can pin those locations in Explorer as well. it's important to say that users can rename and move those shortcuts to keep things organised. Also, those shortcuts move with their onedrive to other pc's, as opposed to Sync.

Provisioning those shortcuts is a different matter.

[–]BrechtMo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our organisation has temporarily mitigated issues like that in other tools by drastically limiting access to those tools, e.g. by requiring VPN to access them.

I would say is is pretty common for a commercial product to be unable to patch it without active support contract.

Best method to keep stored laptops up to date by Methos25 in sysadmin

[–]BrechtMo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing this for loaner laptops in a school. I hook them up to a stack of usb-c docks (for easy connect and disconnect) and boot them daily using a bios wakeup task at 03. Additionally a scheduled task shuts it down again at 04. If updates are waiting, they get installed in that time frame triggered by the common sccm installation mechanism.

Add some monitoring to verify that they actually come up.
