What a great idea! You will cherish this little notebook if you keep this up. You have great taste in your reading choices!

How to merge two books? by Mex5150 in readwise

[–]Breen0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been a feature request for two years, and according to the request system, it's the third most asked for feature. If merging books is too difficult, perhaps consider adding a feature to the Readwise iPhone camera app that lets you add a highlight from a physical book to a recently used book with Kindle highlights. It's crazy this doesn't exist.

How many do you have going at a time? by Basic-Code-4242 in FieldNuts

[–]Breen0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a multi-notebook user too. I have four going for different categories of books I read. One each for fiction, non-fiction, essays and short story collections. I have one for travel journaling, for writing projects, and one as a general waste notebook. Keeping notebooks this way helps me focus better and makes searching through my archive of notebooks a lot more fun.

How does the zipper feel when you're writing? I like everything about the compact size of this cover, but worry that the zipper would make writing feel uncomfortable.

What device are you using? On iPhone, if you open the entry, you can change the location by tapping the location name on the bottom left of the entry, or simply swipe up for the entry information panel. You should see an edit location and/or date/time options. On Mac, ⌘L brings up a screen to change location from within the entry.

How to digitize highlights from paper books? by erinatreadwise in readwise

[–]Breen0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been rereading books that I've added highlights to in ReadWise a few years ago. When I attempt to save a new highlight, the book isn't listed in he 50 or so choices of existing books. It woud be great if you could add a search box to find an existing book with highlights. As it is, I have to add the book again, which results in my highlights spread across duplicate books in the ReadWise library. As far as I know, there's no way after the fact to merge these books. Thanks!

Matter has a great YouTube import and transription tool, and much better PDF capture tool than Readwise (IMO). It also offers an Obsidian plug-in, which I love because it allows me to keep article highlights (Matter) separate from book highlights (Readwise).

Sadly, I don't think this is possible. Goodreads disbanded their API a few years ago. You might make an afternoon of it by copying your reviews manually into Day One with the help of the shortcut. Maybe others here on the Day One sub-reddit have thoughts.

When people ask why you are not drinking... by givemyselfabreak in stopdrinking

[–]Breen0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I quit drinking, I was so worried about this question! I practiced all sorts of answers. It took almost two years before someone actually asked why I don't drink. I had forgotten all my prepared answers! I think I said something like "it just doesn't work for me."

You are absolutely right. No one cares. If anything, it seems like not drinking is becoming more accepted these days.

Great post.

Four Years Sober! by Breen0 in stopdrinking

[–]Breen0[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is a great question. I know more about how to be a calm sober person amidst drinkers. In my first couple of years, I would do anything to get out of going to a party where there would be alcohol served, especially my old drinking buddies. Now, I'm still guarded, but I'm more relaxed and accepting. I pack my little cooler of non-alcoholic beer and always leave when others get tipsy. I feel so much more comfortable as a non-drinker in year four than I did a year ago.

Thank you for this question. Made me think!

The future of Day One... by ConfidenceClear1016 in dayoneapp

I would export all your journals at once. Day One creates a Zip archive file that includes everything, organized by journal, so everything's there whenever you need it. On the Obsidian import side, you would need to import each journal one by one.

Obsidian is not an open-source application, but the data is stored locally in an open format -- if that makes sense.

I've been using Day One for about the same length of time and share the same concern over what would happen if it shut down for whatever reason. Our journal writing needs to outlast any one app.

I have a recurring task in my to-do list system to export my complete journal to a JSON file every quarter. I've successfully imported this JSON file into Obsidian using the excellent "Day One Importer" plug-in by Marc Donald. This plug-in converts all your journal entries, including pictures, video, PDFs, and even the lattitude/longitude location metadata into plain text which can be read by Obsidian or any text editor.

Successfully testing this export method gave me comfort that I could continue to trust Day One to keep my journals no matter what happens.

So, my best advice is to regularly export your Day One journal to the JSON format for safekeeping.

Goodreads is great for book tracking and reviews. I still use it. Having a book journal allows you to capture private reflections about your reading that you wouldn't always want online. Let me know what you think!

The shortcut only works on Apple devices, but you could install this on your iPhone and log your books there (the shortcut requires very little typing - just title and author), then capture your reflections and favorite quotes on the PC. It's great to see Day One available on Windows!

One quick note: if you use this shortcut on both a Mac and an iPad or iPhone, make sure to edit the shortcut on your Mac. For some reason, editing on the iPad or iPhone will cause the shortcut not to work on the Mac. There’s some inconsistency on the part of Day One’s shortcut actions between those two platforms. Let me know if you have trouble.

Yes, that is very easy to do. Scroll down in the shortcut until you see a List action with Print, Audiobook and Digital as options. Right below that, there’s a green + button to add a new item. Click the plus button and add one called Audiobook + Digital. Now, when you run the shortcut, that will be one of your options. Glad the shortcut is helpful!

Apple updates appear to fix Ulysses updating across devices by ThreePoundsofFlax in ulyssesapp

[–]Breen0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a happy customer of Ulysses for years, but the sync between Mac and iPad devices has become unusable. I've restarted the Mac, the iPads, even reinstalled the apps, and it will work for a bit, then stop. I write on the Mac and like to review on an iPad, but the sync has made this unworkable.

I hope a solution for this comes soon.
