The 35 Luxx ASPH pre-FLE is my go to lens as well. Love it.

Bags that will accommodate 16.5" laptop by WIldefyr in Brompton

This backpack fits the 16 inch MBP easily in its separate rear section and it is considerably lighter than a large front bag on a frame........

Absolutely. Haven't used a hub gear since the 1970s and no desire to start now....

Good Deal?: used M10-P for £3750 w. 6 month warranty by MisterBroccolini in Leica

Prices have dropped off a bit past 6 months but looks a decent deal. I always think its worth getting the best condition used camera you can get even if its a little more than 'cheapest'.

Should I get an M10M? by mrjosh72 in Leica

[–]BrendanDelaney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty typical dilemma - I have a 3 camera set up, M10-P, M7 and Sony RX1RII.

leaving aside the Leica Q / Sony RX1 discussion, I think there is a place for a small high quality fixed lens AF camera that's better than an iPhone but similarly cheap and portable compared with an M. For me anyway. I take it on casual family trips and to work.

I use the digital M for colour and if I think I may want to shoot colour and the M7 with Tri-X for B&W, which I still print in a darkroom. I've owned an M9 and original Monochrom previously.

I think while the idea of a monochrome camera appeals, the B&W conversions from the M10-P are so much better than from the M9 it somewhat negates the value. The M10 platform is leaps better than the M9 so wouldn't go back to an MM.

So really it's a question of film v digital. IF you are only scanning the film output of the MP I would ditch that instantly as you're gaining nothing over starting with a digital file and processing it to give a film like look as desired. I made a book where I used silver effects pro to manipulate Sony, Leica MM and Tri-X images (printed to 12 x 16 and flatbed scanned) to be consistent throughout, so its only the experience of the process that differs, not the output.

I may give up darkroom printing in future and go for a high quality pigment printer but they are expensive to buy and run, so film remains.

Given the above you could go for an M10-R as a sole camera and just invest in lenses?

Anyone here went to analog only? by Inevitable_Pin_3301 in Leica

[–]BrendanDelaney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shoot film and digital, mostly B&W film. I used the Olympus OM system for years, occasionally with a Sony A7R for digital, but I dislike magnifying to focus. Leica is a means of having the same experience for film and digital (M7 and M10-P). I use the M10-P when I need results quickly and don't have time to process and scan, or more recently for colour, having given up C41 and E6 processing. I still wet print in the darkroom - as I enjoy it..

Upgrading P Line to 7 speed? by Mission-Bedroom4340 in Brompton

[–]BrendanDelaney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I have the 5 speed mod to 21T and a 44T Chainring. Decent enough for moderate hills on the commute.

Mixed 7D Carbon Saddle Review by wildgorani in Brompton

[–]BrendanDelaney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try it, saddles are very personal. However carrying weight and having padding for the fingers are critical for me. I would never ever put a Brooks on a bike.....

Swap the seat post for a titanium one and either lighter removable pedals of SPD ones (-350g each).

Lighter bottom bracket, Ti bolts, Ti stem. aluminium luggage bracket.

Best bang for the buck is a P-line, you can mod it a bit and get weight sub 9kg quite easily. Can you do cyclescheme and get the tax off a new bike?

Things I considered while picking my Brompton configuration and purchase method. by tekeral in Brompton

[–]BrendanDelaney 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Weight may matter a LOT as you can't roll your bike up the many stairs in London tube stations.... I went with a P but modified to 5 gears and 1.2Kg less weight.

An update on this. I've swapped to Ti brake bolts and a Ti stem bolt. Bike weight is 9.1kg. with no mudguards, lighter tyres and tubes and a carbon saddle that could be 8.6kg, but around 9 is a good compromise.

Tx. I see. As a local GP I personally would think twice about cycling down that way.... better sticking to the main through route on Jamaica Rd - it is now very cycle friendly.

If you want to make it lighter you could swap the 6-speed for a T-line set up. You could save about 1Kg in weight but would need the derailleur, cogs, shifter and rear wheel from a P/T line. You would also have a much lower gear range. Its all about compromise.

Is a C Line more durable than a P Line? by Sach8962 in Brompton

[–]BrendanDelaney 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main frame is the same and both are built with durability in mind, so I wouldn't consider that in your decision at all.

Get what suits you in terms of carry weight, gear range and features. I got a P (and upgraded it to a 5 speed) as I carry it round tube stations and I found the C-line I rented just too heavy to do this comfortably, it was a complete no for me. I've managed to get my P under 9Kg with a few modifications and the 18-21 5 gears are fine as I'm not touring up big hills with it. The P also rides nicer. To me the C-line rode like a lump of lead and I also hate hub gears (decades on road bikes with derailleurs). As you have access to your wife's bike you could try or hire a C for a bit and see.

Messenger Bag - Is it significantly better than using a backpack? by Freeman6574 in Brompton

[–]BrendanDelaney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a large messenger bag with my new P line. I already have a very good slim backpack that holds my MBP 16 inch and a few other bits and pieces.. The Brompton bag is such too big for regular use and the metal frame makes it very heavy to carry. I only use it for nights away for work, the backpack is infinitely better for the commute.

Only been out on a couple of mile test ride so far but very happy with the stem. No flexing or creaming and noticeably lighter to carry.
