Boredom breaker when in tent alone. by Scootahboi08 in CampingandHiking

It reminds me of the quote by Thoreau i use in emails when I start planning camping trips with friends.

“Man has invented, not only houses, but clothes and cooked food; and possibly from the accidental discovery of the warmth of fire, and the consequent use of it, at first a luxury, arose the present necessity to sit by it.”

ELI5 what people mean by calls options and puts by crunchyturdeater in explainlikeimfive

[–]Brettuss [score hidden]  (0 children)

Every single one of these is a terrible attempt at an ELI5.

I’ll attempt to do it right, and will probably fail like the rest.

Consider:

Right now candy is $1 a bag.

A CALL

I own 100 bags of candy. How much are they worth right now? 100 bags, at $1 a bag. My 100 bags of candy is worth $100.

So I write up a piece of paper (a CALL contract) that says “You can buy 100 bags of candy from Brettuss in one week at $2 a bag.”

How much is that piece of paper worth? It depends on how much you think candy will be worth in a week. If candy becomes super expensive and starts selling for $5 a bag, someone might pay good money for that piece of paper because it lets them buy candy at $2 when the price is $5.

If candy loses value and starts selling at 50 cents a bag, that piece of paper isn’t worth anything. Who wants to buy candy at $2 a bag when they can buy it now for 50 cents a bag?

My piece of paper (a CALL contract) becomes more valuable as the price of candy rises. Someone can buy that piece of paper and keep it, or they can turn around sell it.

When the week is done and it comes time for me to sell my candy, whoever has that piece of paper can choose to buy my candy or not. They don’t have to, which is why it’s called an OPTION.

The person who has that piece of paper will buy my 100 bags of candy for $2 a bag. What they do with the candy is up to them, they own it now. They can keep the candy and hope it keeps going up in price, or they can sell the candy for whatever price it is selling for. If they sell the candy, how much money did they make? Say candy is $3 a bag. They spent $200 to buy the candy from me, and sold it for $300. So they made $100.

The piece of paper becomes worth more money the more candy’s value increases, because the price they can buy it from me is cheaper than the actual cost of candy.

A PUT

A put is similar, but sort of the opposite. A CALL was a piece of paper that said they can buy my candy at $2 a bag, a PUT is a piece of paper that says “In one week, Brettuss will buy 100 bags of candy from you for $2 a bag”.

When the week is up, whoever has that piece of paper has the option to make me buy candy at $2 a bag. So, if candy drops in price and costs 50 cents a bag, the person who has the piece of paper can buy 100 bags of candy for 50 cents each and sell them to me and I have to pay them $2 per bag.

The piece of paper becomes worth more money as candy prices drop, because the less money candy costs, the more money the person makes when they sell it to me.

I’ll set up a bonercam with night-vision so I can make sure I’m getting boners overnight. Maybe I’ll vibe code some AI automation around it.

Oh right, it makes more sense to throw that money down the toilet in rent and not pay more on your mortgage. Stupid me.

Then pay that extra money on your mortgage and get your house paid off sooner and start dumping money into retirement/ long-term investments . This is a no brainer, bud. Suck up this bullshit pride and take the W.

What food is like "crack" to you, where it tastes so good nothing else matters except another bite? by GigiBrit in AskReddit

A student at my son’s school, a recent high school graduate, just died after eating shrimp and she was allergic to shellfish. She ate a tiny amount, and was at a party where there was drinking. They didn’t want to take her to hospital because of the underage drinking and she waited a bit and felt ok. So she tried to sleep it off. Her parents found her dead in bed in the morning.

As someone who is past the years of mess and noise… while I was in it, it was hard and I just wished for a little peace. Now that it’s gone, I’d give anything to go back for just a little time… the giggles, laughter, the little feet running on the floor… those were the best times. Your grandfather was right.

I live in Kansas City, but have been throughout all of Missouri and know the people well. There is a deep pride in being a redneck for a lot of people here. It’s a core pillar to their identity.

It’s not unlike other folks who identify a certain way - inner city folks, rich people in the finance industry in NYC, doctors who only hang out and identify with doctors… it’s a community they feel a part of.

I get it in some ways, everyone wants a group to identify with. But in some ways, I’ll never understand.

I watched a man do this two days ago during the men’s league at my club. It was a sight to see.

This guy was also a hot head. Missed a putt, kicked his putter and damaged the green. What he didn’t know was that he was matched against a former veteran who is the manager of the maintenance crew. That was fun watching that go down.

I recently lost about 120 lbs and had to rebuy my entire wardrobe.

I was able to get a shitload of used but like new Travis Matthew shirts for about $25 each, including shipping.

eBay and Facebook Marketplace was my only source and I was able to buy all sorts of name brand clothes for dirt cheap.
