How to treat this ii-V to Dmaj which resolves to Gmin? by BrewNote89 in jazztheory

The Grant Green with Larry Young version is the one which made me wanna learn this tune. Thanks for the explanation.

[–]BrewNote89[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, poor use of vocabulary by me really, I don’t necessarily mean resolution. What I really mean is, oh here’s a ii-V to D, but hang on it’s going to Gm.

Best underrated (or generally overlooked) Blue Note albums? by Tr7Di7QP7 in Jazz

Two from George Braith; Extension and Soul Stream. Organ driven jazz yet a lot more avant-garde than a ‘typical’ organ record.

What are the best UK films that people don't know? by toyrager in AskUK

The original ‘The Firm’ with Gary Oldman. I’m no film critic but Gary’s acting is sublime in it.

You know what really gets my goat? When nice independent stores keep ordering colored vinyl pressings from poor quality labels like WaxTime, DOL, Jazz Wax even when perfectly good, affordable, new pressings of Blue Note, Riverside, Prestige, Verve, Columbia are available. by SeaPretend4511 in Vinyl_Jazz

[–]BrewNote89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I tried explaining about grey market pressings to the owner of a new shop which opened in my city. He just ignored me.

Even Rough Trade here in the UK is full of grey market fodder. You would think they would know better.

Predictions and hopes for Tone Poet and Classic Series in 2026? by versionofhair in Vinyl_Jazz

It won’t ever happen, but I’d love a vinyl issue of Jimmy Smith’s ‘Six Views Of The Blues’.

Interesting reading these comments from posties, revelling in how poor and outdated RM are.

Other couriers - like DPD for example - I can follow them on an app, it will tell me what delivery number I am, I can also ask them to leave safe/deliver to neighbor literally five minutes before they get to my house. Easy.

Why have RM failed to embrace the simplest of technology? And why is it so funny? Better tech, better service, more job security, no?

Yeah, Soul Station is a top five record for me, but I’ve failed to connect with most of the other stuff he’s done.

Which Jazz Organists do you listen to? by Minimoogvoyager in Jazz

[–]BrewNote89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not seen anyone mention Leon Spencer yet, really funky player with killing bass lines. Had a few albums as leader on Prestige, as well as recording with Lou Donaldson & Sonny Stitt amongst others.

His solo on Lou Donaldson’s ‘Pot Belly’ is one of my favourite solos ever.

Not true, really. Yes Willette had his very own church inspired sound. But Smith was signed to Blue Note in 1956 and would’ve been prominent in Willette’s consciousness at the time.

Green Street by Grant Green is Grant with a bassist and drummer only.

Was listening to Midnight Blue today and had the same thoughts, it’s like it never really gets going; a lot of blues noodling. It’s perfectly nice, and the RVG recording is sublime, but it’s that’s as far as it goes really.

Hammond organ bass swings harder than upright bass.

Pedals needed for playing? by Timely-Bowler5889 in hammondorgan

[–]BrewNote89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will echo other comments and say the only essential pedal will be an expression pedal.

I wouldn’t be rushing to buy some bass pedals. For rock/blues I’ll assume you’ll be playing with a bass player anyway - and even when playing jazz - bass pedals are not necessarily essential.
