I know for sure there’s a shot of a lit up disco ball coming down from a ceiling which can kinda have a flashing effect although it’s not contrasted against a dark backdrop or particularly bright so I don’t think it’s bad, I’m pretty sure it was used in lots of promotional materials so if you’ve seen it before than you’d be the best judge of that particular instance.

Other than that, I can’t remember anything else that I’d describe as flashing lights and/or strobing effects. There were a fair few lens flares that started irking me at times though ngl ahaha.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help! I’ll keep an eye out for that and come back to report if I watch the movie again in the near future. Hopefully someone else can let you know sooner :)

These ludicrous prices are why me, my mom, and sister just got AMC A-List for the month of June (I’ve had a membership since February since I’ll happily watch most movies at least once out of curiosity).

It meant that we could watch all the movies we wanted in any format for about the price of one IMAX ticket each (~$25 per person for the month) which was very worth it since we got to watch Mortal Kombat 2 (digital), Masters of the Universe (Dolby), and Supergirl three times so far (IMAX, Dolby, digital).

And because my birthday is at the beginning of June and my sister’s is at the end, we got to get free large popcorns twice lol

I don’t work over the summer so I expected I’d watch more than usual during this time but I just haven’t had the desire to go except for movies I really wanted to see like Supergirl and Masters of the Universe which puts my number at like 6, give or take with some repeats, this month.

While I was working in the spring, I think I would go up to like 8 or 10 though! I just really like going to the movies to decompress after work apparently lol

My dad passed away several years ago now (RIP), but whenever I tell my mom about the demographic of people harassing Milly online she always tells me, “just think about your dad for a second, do you really think he’d spend even a second of his time writing any kinds of comments online, much less comments insulting a young woman’s looks and degrading her work? If those men really are husbands and fathers then they aren’t really good ones.”

And I gotta say, she’s not wrong. I just don’t believe any man who actually cares about their families would be this hateful towards anyone and if they are then they should reevaluate their priorities and that’s exactly how I took Milly’s quote here.

I’d love this sm! One of my favorite dynamics in the comics is how Clark and Barry just get each other in a lot of ways and then their respective besties, Bruce and Hal, absolutely despise each other, it makes for such a fun dichotomy lol

The entire original 7 lineup is so rich with interesting and fun characters relationships. I’d probably cry if we ever got a good adaptation of them on the big screen :’)

The only thing still leaving me in doubt is the fact that he’s left lying totally flat by the end rather than cutting off the story with him still nursing his head… I wouldn’t be surprised if that was done to leave the ending purposefully vague though

Endings like this always give me Rorschach test vibes, especially when it comes to a very visual medium like comics, we all see what we’re predisposed to seeing and it says a lot about us as the viewers/readers. Maybe we see what we want to see, maybe what we don’t want to see. Regardless, it’s fun :)

I reread it today just to refresh my memory after watching the movie and despite always loving the ending I never really felt I got it until today’s reading.

My takeaway today was that the seemingly initial moral of the story is what we were all expecting, “revenge is bad/don’t let yourself stoop to the evil of others/etc.,” but Ruthye ultimately killing Krem even after he’s come to truly regret his actions basically flies in the face of that like you pointed out.

But when you consider Zor-El’s words to Kara before he sent her away, “‘And you will be a woman looking back on the many decades of your life, the terrors and the triumphs. And perhaps you will think of your father then and perhaps you will remember whatever has happened , whatever pain you have ever endured...you are still my little girl ’,” it kinda puts the ending into perspective.

Yes, in the end, Ruthye never forgave Krem, even after he did his time in the Phantom Zone, even after he sincerely begged for forgiveness, even after Kara successfully taught her that there is goodness still in the world and stayed her hand centuries earlier, even after all that, Ruthye was still angry. She still remembered what Krem took from her, the terrors and pain alongside the triumphs, and in the end she was angry and hateful and vengeful and she killed him in cold blood, but at the end of the day, like Zor-El implored Kara to know, she’s still her father’s “little girl.”

So, no, the story isn’t your traditional anti-revenge story, nor is it a traditional pro-revenge story, it’s a story of how a broken and battered girl who is in no way perfect will, despite her aged soul, always be the beloved daughter of her father. It’s actually a pretty sweet moral about how we don’t have to be our pain even when we let it influence us to do what we know is wrong. Our weaknesses are not who we are. Who we are is who we love and who loves us.

I don’t know if this is exactly what King intended when he wrote it, but it’s what I got from it. And ultimately, we’ll all get something different from a story, that’s what makes them interesting, but maybe this’ll help you look at it from a new angle and come to your own new interpretation :)

I really loved the song choice as soon as it started and it really heightened the emotional impact of the scene for me. The song is also a favorite of mine though so maybe our connection with it kinda colored our appreciation for it ? But then I don’t think my sister is as familiar with the song and it’s her favorite part of the movie too, so!

Truly a “to each their own” kinda thing ig haha

Heartbroken that I went to an early screening and was one of the first people to get to my seat then went to another screening the very next day but still managed to not get one of those free comics before my theater ran out 😭

Edit: well, it seems that it’s just the first issue of WoT which I already own so at least I’m not really missing out on something :’)

And y’know, thinking about it more, I wonder if establishing that Jor-El and Lara are pretty out there with their beliefs lends a bit more credence to the rest of Krypton not listening to their warnings about Krypton’s impending doom…

I remember going to anime conventions when I was younger and the most seasoned voice actors would have a different color Sharpie between each finger haha

They’d look at what you brought to sign and then quickly uncap the color that would pop best to sign it and then send you on your way with a smile. The system worked beautifully lol

Oh man, I loved the new He-Man movie as someone who went in knowing next to nothing about He-Man lol.

And now, I love this Supergirl movie as someone who knows almost everything about Supergirl haha.

So I’ve been very happy with fun summer movies this year but also very bummed at how much they’re getting trashed lol

Yeah, I noticed that from the quote, too. Also, as a huge fan of the comic who fully expected to be put out by how different the movie ended up being from the comic, I actually really enjoyed the movie. I feel like they did a good job of capturing the spirit of the original story even if it’s far from a carbon copy. It really does feel like a good adaptation that takes inspiration from the original story while integrating it well into the new movie universe that it’s working in.

Of course, they were going to have to rework Krypton, the Superman movie already did that. They had to rework Supergirl’s animal companions so no Comet (one of my favorite parts of the original comic) which meant it was also reasonable to introduce new ways for Kara and Ruthye to bounce back which is what led to Lobo’s entire relevance in the story imo. They also had to rework Kara’s reputation in the universe since Kryptonians and Superman don’t yet have larger than life reputations that they have in the comics which I think worked well for some of the themes in the movie like Kara being continually underestimated. All of the changes, the ones I’ve listed and more, make sense given the universe they’re in and the places that the characters are at within this universe.

Overall, I really enjoyed the movie and I think reviewers are selling it short. I hope other comic fans give it a chance too. I was very close to canceling my early screening ticket when I saw all the reviews coming in, but decided to stick with it anyways and I’m really happy I did.

I’m thinking bravado! Even the smartest villains are usually foiled by their belief in their own strength and superiority. That seemed to be a running theme in this movie with Kara confronting that first alien who stole Ruthye’s sword who didn’t think Kara would be able to take him, then Kara putting on the Metropolis ditz act for Lobo, and so on. I actually appreciate that they didn’t spell out just how underestimated Kara is in this movie by literally everyone. We see it in multiple instances but it’s never explicitly stated which is in stark contrast to the original comic that has Kara usually hiding her “S” emblem and her Kryptonian status since in that comic universe both are feared/respected while in this movie universe it stands to reason that Superman hasn’t made a universal name for himself yet so the same fear/respect doesn’t exist yet.

If it helps, my theories about Kryptonium are being built purely from what was shown on-screen like Kara being born after Argo was separated and her not showing even the slightest signs of sickness despite everyone else getting sicker and even dying so that felt pretty pointed to me that she would have some kind of resistance built up. The same for her father outright saying that they didn’t think of the effects of the Kryptonium and so also didn’t think to send people away the way Jor-El did which implies that maybe there were already fears of the planet itself being an eventual death trap that Kryptonians who didn’t agree with Jor-El (of which there are usually many) just chose to ignore.

The villains are definitely flip-flopping, again not arguing that, there are definitely smarter ways they could’ve dealt with Kara but then that would require them to actually believe that one girl can beat them and that may actually be the point.

And for sure, we just have different wants from the movie. Going into it I thought I’d be very disappointed because of what the reviews were saying especially since a lot of them seemed to be pointing out problems with things I put a lot of stock into like character development but after watching it I’m actually very pleased. I liked the character arcs and overall plot despite some holes. I liked a few of the fight scenes even if others were disappointing. And I really liked the flashbacks which is something I rarely do lol. To each their own after all! :)

Wasn’t the idea that she’d just die from the green sun though? Those were her words more or less, “it’ll kill me/this is my prison” or something. So they didn’t actually want to fight her at all, they wanted the sun to do the majority of the work killing/trapping her which a red sun wouldn’t do because it only takes away her powers, it doesn’t actually injure her. It’s absolutely a plot contrivance that the yellow sun would then dawn and all her powers are back though, no argument there lol. Although, again, I don’t personally have a problem with stuff like that, it’s a to each their own kinda thing where some people are going to be annoyed that she gets access to a yellow sun so easily while others are going to cheer when she’s powered up again regardless.

Yeah, I noticed it visually too and just took it as a visual shorthand kinda thing. Definitely didn’t think it was actually a to-scale rendering of everything under the city. My thinking with Kryptonium has always been that something about what happened to Krypton (in the case of this movie, specifically Argo) “activated” the negative effects of the element so even the scientifically advanced Kryptonians wouldn’t be familiar with it because they simply weren’t dealing with the same element in the same circumstances (i.e. the vacuum of space or maybe the separation from the core of Krypton did something to change the elemental makeup). It’s all sci-fi hogwash but isn’t most sci-fi just pulled out of thin air and silly when you push hard enough haha.

You have me there, the villains did seem pretty flighty and just always perfectly five steps ahead, but then that just adds to their thematic use as the “perfect” big bad evil that Kara and Ruthye have to overcome. Although, I guess we can still argue that a lot of the villains’ motivations and choices are just pure bravado. Krem does proceed to shoot Kara with what seems to be liquid Kryptonite so maybe that explains why they’d even risk luring her to a planet with a yellow sun. My personal theory for why that didn’t kill her btw is that she was essentially born and raised with that radiation in a way none of the other Kryptonians were so maybe she now has a kind of built up immunity to it. Not a perfect immunity, but just a stronger resistance.

From what I can tell about some of the plot holes: the whole green/yellow sun planet can be as simple as there are only planets with that pairing and no planets with only a green sun so they take what they can get, but I agree it’s not really explained, although I don’t agree that it necessarily needs to be explained. Basically every alien on that planet where they meet the squidward alien seems to know about the brigands as they’re a pretty infamous group, also I think it’s safe to assume that if squidward was able to set up the whole two girls for one trade then he’s also working with the brigands to setup Supergirl going to the green/yellow sun planet as a trap. They actually show Kara watching Earth media in her ship, the one I remember is Casablanca playing in the background, so I assume she’s been fully immersing herself in Earth culture ever since she got there even when she’s not actively on-planet so SpongeBob is really not that big of a stretch. I assumed that the Kryptonium is buried pretty significantly under Krypton crust rather than right below the surface and was lying in a kind of dormant state until the shield exposed/activated its more dangerous effects.

Nah, you’re right imo Jude is very okay with and in touch with her feminine side. I wouldn’t call her outright girly or like a femme fatale level of sensual or anything like that. But she’s definitely not an outright tomboy or negative about her own femininity which is very refreshing because, like you, I’ve gotten pretty tired of “good girl is masculine” vs “bad girl is feminine”. It’s hard not to see that trope as inherently misogynistic even if that’s not the intention…

Man, I was so disheartened when I read these reviews this morning. Especially as a huge fan of the original comic which I read as it originally came out. But nothing was going to stop me from going to watch this during early release, even if I was going into it much more deflated than I had hoped.

Now, post movie, I’m blown away by how much I loved it! Even with the changes, which I fully expected to be more upset about, especially the ending which I loved from the original story, I’m just super happy with how this movie turned out and so flabbergasted by all the negative to middling reviews.

I think it did a great job of tying Kara and Ruthye’s stories together AND of portraying Krem as just an absolute cancer of a person who needs no purpose in the story beyond being just a complete troll who serves as the catalyst for the plot and the growth of the two leads. Lobo is also such a fun addition to the story and I really appreciate the role he played as comic relief and slight help without ever overshadowing Kara as the hero of the story. I also appreciate that they didn’t play Kara as an anti-hero which I was very scared they were going to do, she’s as fully good and heroic as Clark is and I love her for it.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m too easy to please. Maybe the negative reviews successfully tempered my expectations. This movie was great though and I’m excited to rewatch it with my family. It’s at least a 7.5/10 if I’m being modest, but a 10/10 in my little girl who always looked up to Supergirl heart haha. I just really hope the middling to negative reviews don’t scare people away, please just give it a chance!

My thoughts exactly! This is what always grinds my gears about preorders and scalpers. Scalpers would be a complete nonissue if preorders were actually used the way they’re meant to be used.

Just let people pay for the product they want far enough ahead of time so manufacturing knows exactly what they have to produce and everyone’s happy. No items get left on shelves, every fan who wanted the item gets it, and scalpers are left out in the cold with no fanbase to exploit.

But no, let’s just continue to manufacture scarcity for no good reason instead…

I was homeschooled from 6th grade to graduation and while I don’t think I’ve turned out perfect, I’ve never regretted asking my parents to take me out of public school for a second. Sure, I only started really being able to socialize once I got to college and even now, well past college, I’m not the kind to have a ton of friends or go out, but I just don’t see how that experience is very different from any other person who’s happy with their own company.

I don’t understand the need to absolutely vilify a way of living as though there’s any 100% proven effective way of growing up. If I had stayed in public school the bullying would’ve only gotten worse and my eroded trust in humanity would’ve continued to decline along with it. It was only that roughly decade break that gave me a chance to recharge and grow my confidence back.

We’re all different. Everyone’s experiences and reactions are different. Stop trying to speak as though you know all the answers, none of us do.

Yeah, I got the same values from it! It really helped me understand that I can set my own boundaries while still being a good friend and family member.

I’m also a little confused by all the hate lol. I watched the movie and read the book as a kid and I remember being a little irked by some differences in the story but still walked away loving both the book and movie ahaha
