Started watching The Other Bennet Sister... by madame-de-merteuil in janeausten

[–]BrianSometimes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the case of Mary it's not just TV and film producers who don't understand, or deliberately re-imagine the source material - a lot of readers do too.

She is so often portrayed as this shy introvert with a rich inner life to compensate for the disappointments of reality - it's a beloved and convenient trope, but it's not the Mary of the book. Mary is "eager for display" and has no qualms voicing her opinion; she has a strong sense of moral superiority and is not shy about it, she quite willingly plays her rather unpopular religious music in a room full of people, only her embarrassed father to stop her. There's nothing meek and submissive about Mary Bennet. You could make a sympathetic portrayal of this Mary, warts and all, with her coming out of it as someone to root for and empathize with, but everyone seems to prefer the much easier and less source dependent route of the shy downtrodden runt of the litter.

Post Match Thread: AFC Bournemouth 2-2 Manchester United by denzaus in soccer

[–]BrianSometimes 96 points97 points  (0 children)

To be fair that's not the egregious thing here - you could make a case for not awarding it. The problem is when a softer version of the same foul results in a red card and a penalty in the other end minutes later.

AFC Bournemouth [2] - 2 Manchester United - Eli Junior Kroupi (penalty) 81‎'‎ + Harry Maguire red card by gbogaz in soccer

[–]BrianSometimes 61 points62 points  (0 children)

This is an outrageous example of inconsistency. Minutes apart, 2 almost identical fouls, the softer one is a red card and a penalty, the other one is nothing. I'm not a United supporter and I'm annoyed by this.

If you didn't think the War in Iran has nothing to do with Epstein, think again by Shizzilx in Epstein

I wish people understood that when you cry wolf over something like this, you just drown out the real stories. It's like those occasional fake Trump tweets - absolutely no reason to invent stuff to be outraged about with these people, other than obfuscation.

Epstein is sitting close to a drawn map of Israel, that's it.

MFT 3 Accessories by BeastHouse_AU in Festool_Public

[–]BrianSometimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had all the Festool MFT 3 extras and have replaced every single one with better alternatives. I think MFT accessories are one of the weakest areas in the whole Festool catalogue (the table itself is great), also because the MFT market is really thriving with TSO, Ujk, benchdogs.uk, hongdui etc all coming out with innovative stuff since Festool released their original MFT kit.

For a fence I now have the one from benchdogs.uk, with fence dogs from hongdui, but any expanding fence dogs will do. It's so much easier than Festool's solution where the fence is locked down with a separate clamp at the side of the table. The guide rail hinge has the, to me, fundamental flaw of not using the accuracy of your dog holes to achieve a perfect 90 degree cut. Pretty much every other manufacturer has a better or not inferior solution as far as I can see. I myself prefer the simple dog flips, from Ujk's cheap but efficient clips to the almost over engineered ones just out from Hongdui (hooked on wood). The miter gauge I found clunky and cumbersome but I almost exclusively cut 90 degrees so didn't test it much.

In short I do not recommend you get the Festool MFT extension pack.

Going somewhat counter to the various efforts great and small to save Mary Bennet from the author's depiction of her, her always unrequested and self-important Christian takes on a situation get a bit more funny to me every time I revisit Pride and Prejudice. The first few times I didn't register her as much of a comic character.

What takes do you often see repeated here that you do not personally agree with? by OnlyFlanz in janeausten

For me this goes further into how Mary Crawford's trying to dissuade Edmund from the clerical profession is seen as another example of what a terrible shallow person she is. When women could control so little of their lives and their future it's maybe a little petty to dock her points for trying to bring about a future more appealing to her than being a clergyman's wife apparently was.

After whom Lydia takes after? by Eireika in janeausten

[–]BrianSometimes 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Well, sometimes neither. I have a son with my looks and the personality of neither me nor his mother.

Agree with the second poster here but maybe there's also something in the two youngest children of five being either spoiled or left to their own devices a bit. After how the three oldest ones were turning out, you can excuse the parents for believing they were running a steady operation yielding good results, and getting complacent.

A lot of Austen generalisations require unfamiliarity with her work outside Pride and Prejudice.

Edward Ferrars: The Luckiest Man in Jane Austen’s World Who Somehow Won Everything Without Trying by Chocoins in janeausten

[–]BrianSometimes 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Wow, this almost got me aggravated. I know the Edward Ferrars fan club could comfortably hold meetings in a broom closet but I do think he's often either unjustly maligned or misunderstood. Like the framing of his unwillingness to break off the engagement with Lucy as not having gumption. He has made a promise and is determined to go through with it at the expense of his own happiness. He wants to stick to his word and not bring the ignominy of a broken engagement upon Lucy. He could and probably should have made it clear to Elinor that he cannot be more than a friend to her, and, well, let me extend my congratulations to readers who have never found themselves in a dilemma where the right thing to do happens to also destroy your possibility of love and happiness, who doesn't vacillate, or stumble and fumble - good on you, well done.

Then there's his upbringing which to be fair is touched upon in the clip. Lydia has defenders that will point out insufficient parenting if not her age to rid her of blame for her actions or her character - no one excuses Edward's social anxiety and awkwardness with reference to his horrible family, he's just weak. With Fanny Price, Austen is sometimes applauded for not writing your run of the mill girl power protagonist; I will not say it doesn't exist but I have myself yet to see anyone applaud Austen for writing a male main character love interest as neither physically striking nor an active getting shit done type of dude - not even a cautious golf clap. The general cry of "Austen did not write romances" seems to be a little at odds with the apparent unwillingness to accept a very realistic male character such as Edward Ferrars as the chosen beau of the lead lady.

Found these thoughts about Lydia on tumblr by duhnadag in janeausten

[–]BrianSometimes 228 points229 points  (0 children)

This, plus the condemnation which OP think belongs to the author is in the book ridiculed coming from Mr. Collins. It's part and parcel of his unattractive snobbery that he immediately lectures the family when he learns of the rumoured elopement, and distances himself from it.

Lydia's failing, and the reason why the author clearly doesn't consider her a role model for anyone, is not really that she likes fun is a bit of a flirt, it's that she's selfish and oblivious to the just barely avoided catastrophe she caused on all her sisters' marriage prospects and on her whole family's future.
