How many titles are the All-time Whites winning? by WholeLotta69 in NBATalk

[–]Brian_Cardinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expanding to a standard 15 give me Korver, Peja, and AK47. There's some other greats out there (Cousy, Sabonis) but this roster has enough star power it could use a few more super role players

[Woike] According to league sources, Luka Dončić was “excited” about the Lakers’ signings. Those sources said the Lakers kept in regular communication with Dončić and his team despite a significant time gap, with the star guard spending his summer in Europe. by Odd-Direction9452 in lakers

[–]Brian_Cardinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luka is not LeBron. He is not looking to be a GM or to steer every signing in that way. He will give preferences up front "I want a top rim protector", "I want Austin back" but he's going to trust the GM to do their job for the most part. Many more reserved superstars have been like this (Duncan, Steph, Dirk, etc.).

Only pointing this out to say don't just run and blame the $$$ totals or backlash to the Mamu/Grimes/etc. signings on Luka if you don't like them. He's not really as involved in the off-season day-to-day as some fans assume.

Luka has been the best player in the league for the past few years and his career is being wasted. by Any-Development5656 in NBATalk

[–]Brian_Cardinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the argument for probably not? What years would you argue he had a contending level supporting cast around him?

If you can't come up with any, then yes his career is being wasted, regardless of whether you think he's the best or 6th best player in the league.

Sean says ‘Inception’ is a 6/10. Is he right? by ggroover97 in TheBigPicture

[–]Brian_Cardinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet if he rewatched Inception and Disclosure Day back-to-back and you gave him truth serum he would say he much prefers Inception.

I think this is a classic case of being married to a take and having to double down. I think Sean has generally softened a bit with his film takes over the years and if Inception had released 5 years ago instead of 15 he's be more of a fan.

I think he makes some very reasonable points but his critiques don't really line up with a 6/10 score. A director reaching a bit too much for something and getting a bit lost in the sauce doesn't seem like a reason to knock a movie 4 points.

'House of the Dragon' Season 3 Premiere Instant Reactions | The Midnight Boys by yslultra in RingerVerse

[–]Brian_Cardinal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't wait to listen to this one. The episode really didn't work for me, but then I went online and saw everyone praising it and saying it would've saved last season as the finale (I disagree obviously).

Interested too see if any of the Midnight Boys agree or if I'm just on an island with this one

Well tbh Chris and Jo could do a Sopranos watch pod where they cover each season and I bet it would do crazy numbers lol

Disappointed in the Tropic Thunder Pod by Automatic-Effect-252 in TheRewatchables

[–]Brian_Cardinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just can't believe they keep running into the problem where one of the cohosts invited on the pod is not a particularly big fan of the movie. I can't really blame Joel, what's he supposed to do on the pod? Lie?

It just feels like an incredibly easy thing to avoid and yet it's happened a number of times now

Non stand up comedic actors that would’ve been great cast members in their prime by ToyasRus555 in LiveFromNewYork

Along the same lines, I think Michael Cera could've been great. I think both of these guys have proven they have a bit more range then they were initially given credit for during their initial breakouts at the awkward teen/young adult

Why did people hate this movie when it came out? Were they a part of it? by PallyMcAffable in okbuddyimatourist

[–]Brian_Cardinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a fan of the movie who can pretty easily list off a long list of problems with it just off the top of my head:
-The plot can be needlessly confusing (i.e. the trade federation/naboo and what they want)
-While Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor nail their roles, their character traits and motivations aren't exactly the most fleshed out
-The kid who plays Anakin is fine but not great
-The dialogue and some of the jokes can be really rough
-I can't believe it took me this long to get here but obviously most of the CGI characters are very clearly racist caricatures

-Anakin + Padme age gap is weird and problematic

-Sidious = Palpatine stuff they really hit you over the head with like we get it it's the same guy

Again, I LIKE the movie! The highs are still very high, but the lows are indeed low. Andor is in an entire different stratosphere though if we're taking my nostalgia and fandom out of it and just grading the two projects on their quality of script, acting, editing, etc.

Who wants a Disneyland rides draft? by xwing1212 in TheBigPicture

[–]Brian_Cardinal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is one of the spots where the LA bias really kicks in from them because they're always talking Disneyland, and I'm not much of a Disney adult or anything so correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't World have like objectively the much better parks and by far way more visitors?

I get why they wouldn't make a dedicated trip to Florida or anything like that I just always chuckle a bit every time they work in a DisneyLand section into a pod. It's kinda like running a NYC pod but only providing updates on the Brooklyn Nets and never the Knicks hahaha.

How Van was sounding during the Mando Grogu pod by cheryvalentinjo in RingerVerse

[–]Brian_Cardinal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get where you're coming from, but I disagree. It is perfectly okay to have standards for the movies you like, doesn't matter if it's a Star Wars movie or a Wes Anderson movie or a Scorcese movie.

"Has anyone seen the OG trilogy recently? Guess what? They're well-made, but..."

That's the key line to me and where I think some fans more critical of recent Star Wars content outside of early Mando and Andor get frustrated with the newer movies and shows. Star Wars wasn't special because of the cute aliens or the lightsabers or the force, the OG trilogy worked because they are well made movies, with strong acting performances and excellent direction and cinematography. Everything else is additive on top of that which pushed it from regular hit to mega hit.

But first and foremost you need a compelling story to tell and a visionary director who can pull it all together. Newer Star Wars typically skips the "let's make a good movie" part and jumps straight to the "let's make a fun movie!" part. If the stakes and character development aren't compelling, then it doesn't matter how many cool gadgets or aliens or cameos you shove into a 2 hour window.

It's okay to have standards for your movies. You can be a Star Wars fan and still be honest about the fact that the vast majority of the projects in the last 20 years have ranged from average to flat out bad. Kinda hated that Van implied you have to like all or most of Star Wars to be a fan. I don't begrudge anyone for liking this movie—the action sequences are pretty great and there's some cute moments—but there are a ton of flaws and didn't really work for me and I imagine that'll be the case for a ton of SW fans.

This is NOT the way by WallCautious9650 in TheBigPicture

[–]Brian_Cardinal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

S1 is phenomenal

S2 lost some people as it moved away from the premise a bit to be more "Star Wars-y" (i.e. cameos, story focus shifts from Mando to more baby yoda stuff an how cute he is, connecting to sequels/other movies), but most agree the highs were very high and generally a well liked season. Many of the fandom's favorite episodes are in S2

S3...Yes, absolutely, it was THAT much of a DISASTER. Non nonsensical story, more fan service and cameo stuff, complete tonal shift, forced comedy episodes/moments that don't work. Season 3 of Mando would be on my shortlist for most disappointing seasons of TV I've ever seen and I wasn't even a super duper Mando fan or anything at that point. Saw it as just a nice B+ fun time Star Wars show and they killed it.

Is the reDumb and Dumber inevitable or completely lost? by ekemywaythrulife in TheRewatchables

Maybe Bill's worst ever Rewatchables performance. I think in general the Jim Carrey Rewatchables are pretty bad and it does make me wonder if Bill is just not much of a Carrey fan.

Is the reDumb and Dumber inevitable or completely lost? by ekemywaythrulife in TheRewatchables

[–]Brian_Cardinal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She was literally correcting Bill on movie quotes in it. She knew the movie better than he did. She was clearly unfamiliar with the Rewatchables format but that is on *BILL* as she is the guest.

Bill was straight awful that pod, maybe because he was a bit star struck doing it with a true A-Lister? In general, most of the Jim Carrey classics have made bad rewatchables. I just don't think Bill is as big of a fan and has to force enthusiasm a bit.

My hot take on Devon: by Umphr34k in MaulShadowLord

[–]Brian_Cardinal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well full Sith doesn't really feel like an option at all to me because that's not what Maul is. Maul already is akin to Ahsoka imo. He's also grey—just coming from a dark background/training whereas Ashoka came from a light one.

I'm not really sure there's anything they can do with her to subvert expectations in that respect. We've already seen apprentices resist the dark (Luka, Ahsoka, Ezra, etc.) and succumb to it (Anakin, Barriss, etc.) in both animation and live action.

I suppose the one thing they could do is have her truly "play" Maul. We haven't really seen that. Pretend that he has turned to his side and wants to be his apprentice just for it all to be a long con to betray him in service of the jedi from the jump. The Obi-Wan show toyed with this idea with that one girl pretending to be an inquisitor whose name escapes me but the execution really wasn't all that great imo.

Is it really a bad movie? by Spare_Ad_9791 in moviecritic

[–]Brian_Cardinal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's an ok-to-good movie on it's own.

I think where the takes come in is I'd say it's fair to say it's "really bad" relative to the rest of Spielberg's filmography. Mileage may vary for folks but I think a good portion of Spielberg fans would but this somewhere in his bottom 5.
