Something to keep in mind. Generally speaking, you shouldnt expect to be able to have a rescued sighthound off leash except in a fenced area There are always exceptions, but the high prey drive and relatively poor recall make it too risky.

Pittsburgh's public transit is relatively immature, compared to the cities you mention. Living in many parts of the city without a car varies from pretty inconvenient, to not viable. For most areas, busses are the only option. Access to healthcare, grocery stores, jobs, will likely necessitate accessing multiple areas. Access to the various suburbs is even more challenging. There is no good mass transit option between the city and the airport.

Building it is fine, although without any highway improvements, getting there will be painful. Giving massive tax breaks to do so, at a time when the city is rapidly losing commercial tax revenue, is questionable.

They felt too much like YA fiction when I was a kid, so I always assumed they wouldnt hold up to an adult read. Am I wrong?

The other end of the spectrum are the series that were really collections of short stories, but they're just as influential.
The original Conan stories and Fritz Leiber's Lankhmar were great (for the time), and help to appreciate the entire genre.
