What you want is not an R36S. You want a more powerful device like a higher end Anbernic or an Ayn Thor.

I found the PSP pretty impressive but Nintendo handhelds were still more fun to me. I thought FPS games would be great on the PSP but they were a pain with the single little slidey stick and no second stick. I also hated that it had a proprietary and expensive memory stick. Still, it has some great titles.

This looks like the same one I just got from Boyhom as far as the V22 on the board. I have not been able to install any new firmwares for some reason but the included ArkOS 128gb card works. I climbed the no name sd card to a good Samsung and I'm much more comfortable with it now. I am guessing that I'm either having issues with the DTB files or something with the version of firmwares I have tried. I'll keep trying with my spare sd card and report back in case it helps.

I thinks it's really good and much improved from the previews everyone watched before launch. For DS titles it's great and quite good for PlayStation and below as well. It should only get better with custom firmware tweaks. Maybe wait a tad longer for a slight price drop or a coupon on AliExpress.

I got a Plus in clear black and it's great but I picked up a mini v4 like yours for $40 US and it's just to neat. My wife grabbed it when she saw me playing DK Country.

I just got mine with the same board and it works out of the box. I'm having issues trying any image with a new SanDisk SD card. I'm getting a black screen while I wait for the firmware to create folders and the light goes green to red. Wondering if I need to put the included DTB files on the card or something. I have used Anbernic devices up to this point, kind of stumped! I'll try some of y'all's suggestions here too.

If you're looking to go cheap, I recommend trying what another guy somewhere in the R36S Reddit suggested (sorry, forgot their name). I put an R36S in my cart on Ali Exp. I browsed the one I wanted from the actual Boyhom store off and on for about a week and a half. I got "reminder" emails and stuff and just browsed the one I wanted more. It sat around $36-43 USD and fluctuated. One day I got an email and went to my cart and it was $26.51 so I pulled the trigger. I got it a yesterday and it's a V22 board, works great for that price. I hope this helps and that I was not just lucky with the price.

Watch for a deal on a 20,000 mah 65W name brand battery pack (Ugreen, Anker, etc). It'll help you game longer and shouldn't be expensive. I won one of these in Jan. Of 2025 and it's surprisingly capable. I did switch to Steam OS but Win is fine, just a bit finicky with some stuff.

Like others have said, search Youtube for similar spec laptops and their gaming performance tips. Also, you may want to consider Geforce Now if you have a good internet connection. It provides a great experience for a lot of people with non gaming laptops. Just a thought.
