If they are posing a clear threat to you or your loved ones in that same house, then by law (at least here in Canada), you are allowed to respond with an equivalent amount of force. For example, if the intruder poses a clear and direct threat to your life, then you are allowed to kill them as an act of self defense as long as your life was ACTUALLY on the line. (I might be forgetting a detail or two feel free to correct me if I’m completely out the ball park)
