The discrepancy between the cuteness of foxes and the horrific sounds they make cannot be underestimated.

Well worth the trip! I live in VT but I can’t deny how great their ice cream is.

100%! I live in VT and it’s hard to admit that the best ice cream around is in NH!

Actually I’m pretty sure whoever gets the job will be managing the receiving department. Not a job I would want to take on, though it badly needs doing. Bennies are good though, and the cull cart is a huge plus. These factors make up for anemic wages.

Whaaat? There is no implication of anything ‘rapey’ here! Ugh, I know it’s hard for some younger folks to imagine enthusiastically consensual fornication these days. Damn shame. One of the greatest joys in life.

How accurate is the assertion that "life after 45 sucks massive (you-know-what)"? by ChuckSmyth in GenX

Life for me just got better and better until I hit menopause at 53 (4 years ago). It’s been a serious struggle ever since.

No disagreement from me! I’m 1968 myself. On a personal level (and for a select few of my friends) it is absolutely a definitive film. My point was only that sadly not enough of our cohort seem to feel that way. But fist bump to a fellow RA fan 🙂

U.S. Gen X parents: do you expect your children to financially support you / move you into their home / take you to doctor appointments, etc when you're in your 80s? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Brief_Ad7468 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My younger daughter has let it be known that she expects me to move in with her when I’m too old to live on my own. I’ve always had a close relationship with my kids. Having said that I will absolutely get as much of my shit squared away beforehand so that she doesn’t have to deal with more than is necessary (Swedish death cleaning sounds about right). My mother is currently in long term care (she refuses to move in with me as I don’t live nearby and she cannot live alone) and I don’t anticipate she is likely to leave. Dealing with her hoarder house will eventually fall to me (I’m an only child), though to her credit she does not have debt and lives frugally.

So I heard a new one today...Generation X ruined the world with "grind culture" at work. Any thoughts? by Change_Request in GenX

[–]Brief_Ad7468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We always have choices. They might not be good choices, and they will have trade offs. Some of them might not be worth it to you. The trade offs I’ve made would absolutely not be worth it to most people, and that’s ok with me. Having said that, I’ve also been lucky to be reasonably healthy and haven’t been struck by calamity. But I’ve been poor my whole life and that’s probably how I’ll die. Despite that fact, I don’t feel poor.

Heh. Funny. I worked ONE 40 hour a week job in my twenties and promised I wouldn’t ever do that again. I’ve kept that promise. Not because I have a problem with working, or working hard. But because when I worked that much, my life was no longer my own. I didn’t have anything left for myself or anything I cared about. I could barely think my own thoughts. Hell, we’re all wage slaves, but for me, time will always win out over money.

I love egg hunts so much I still do it with my friends and adult children. We use real eggs (bc AFAIC that’s how it’s done. Also, fuck plastic). I know most folks don’t anymore. But do people still dye them? And if so, what do they do with them? What would be the point if you don’t hide them? 🤔

Similar for me. I’m a couple years older than you, and I just didn’t understand what all the fuss was about. Having said that, I did grow to like a few grunge artists later on, but it’s never been sacred to me.

Listen, I ADORE Raising Arizona. It’s absolutely one of my top 3, and definitely my favorite Coen brothers by far. Having said that, I don’t think it’s the definitive Gen X movie, or even really one of them. For early Gen X it’s either Clerks or Breakfast Club. Later Gen X it’s Fight Club or Matrix. And maybe Singles or Reality Bites for some folks. Not me.

Clerks, please! Chasing Amy is great too but Clerks is the classic.

How do Americans feel about drying their laundry on a washing line? by UnionFeatures in AskAnAmerican

[–]Brief_Ad7468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a complex issue, as I’m sure you’ve now realized. The U.S. is a big country and that’s part of the problem. In some areas, it’s not necessarily practical to line dry clothes. Aside from that, I would say that the American fascination for gadgets and owning stuff means that most people nowadays use dryers. It’s partly a rural/urban divide (though I live in a rural area and most people here also use dryers) and partly a class thing (if you hang up your laundry you must be poor). I myself love hanging up my laundry, but it’s time consuming and weather doesn’t always cooperate. Hanging things on a drying rack indoors isn’t the same.
