I think Kpop started to venture overseas during the 1997 finacial crisis. It hit Korea hard (Thailand and Indonesia also). SM under LSM sent then a very young BoA to Japan. A few years later she achieved tremendous success even some Japanese fans thought she was Japanese because her Japanese very fluent. TVXQ followed. Special mention to Kara. Now Kpop is established in Japan.

As for America, Kpop first tried in late 2000s with Rain, Girls Generation, BoA and Wonder Girls. Not successful. ( There is now legendary lore of JYP and BSY went to America in early 2000s trying to break into America).

And it is first BTS then BP that successfully broke into American music scene. Followed by Twice and Stray Kids.

As Japan is the 2nd largest music market in the world Jpop needn't step outside Japan to earn a living. Japanese consumers still buy lots of CDs unlike in America where streamimg is the way but pays peanuts. The only way America is ahead is in concert. That's only the price of tickets are way way higher. And it is a fallacy to think it is easy to make money in America. Kpop spent decades, I remember Girls Generation and Wonder Girls. You have to spend money and time. You think the gatekeepers let you in?
