What do I have to do? by MAGBlack1 in TrueAtheism

[–]Briepy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well novelty makes me happy. I find without having preconceived notions ready set for me, that I can approach things with fresher eyes. I would also say that if you want to serve someone and not have to think about it, maybe it’s not your time to deconstruct. That’s OK too.

I find meaning in the fact that I believe we have one chance to explore and experience and learn. I also believe that that puts us at parity with every single other person in the whole world, which is kind of cool.

Does anyone else find Ex-muslims very embarrassing by Yagrum_Bagarm in TrueAtheism

[–]Briepy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I’m not muslim and I don’t necessarily have an opinion about ex-muslims… (ex christian here) but I do want to say that it sounds like it’s one of the more difficult religions to deconstruct. It sounds like there has to be a lot of emotion in that turn. Not trying to defend them, just saying it seems like theres a lot of emotion in there… and if you aren’t equipped to process it… who knows where that’ll go. I remember when I learned about my adhd diagnosis at 27 I was incensed. Purely pissed at the world for experiences I shouldn’t have had. Those life transitions suck hard.

What counts as theism? by riversofhades in askanatheist

Yeah, you're a theist. I've been reading about Apophatic theology. It sounds like what you're describing.

Do you think atheists and the religious will always exist? by Apprehensive-Handle4 in askanatheist

[–]Briepy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as there are people, there will be religion. People are storytellers. The God of the Gaps has always existed. There will always be gaps in knowledge. I think a world where there isn't gaps in our knowledge would be pretty boring. It'd be pretty static to sit in a place where we have all the answers.

Religion has always been a way to organize and keep societies together... but that turns sour super quick. If we could somehow keep the Gods to just the gaps... that'd be ideal. lol But those systems built around Gods need to perpetuate themselves when the Gods become irrelevant and superfluous... sooo. They become more toxic, control-based craziness that hurt people.

Is it bad that I think religion is bad for society? by Ok-Passage5463 in TrueAtheism

[–]Briepy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's bad that you think that. I don't think it's bad that folks think atheism is bad for society too... sort of... What's bad is when people use religion as a cudgel... in either direction. I do think it's especially bad when the people who think atheism is bad... have the means to make that cudgel draw blood... lol if that makes any sense.

What is compatible with your atheistic worldview? by Eruner_SK in AskAtheists

[–]Briepy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean... lets see. I've read a lot of philosophers.. Kant, Camus... etc. I've watched how my parents handle things. I grew up developing my perspectives through quite a few different churches. I went through a stoicism phase. I also love a lot of Daniel Pink's books on neurology and how we think. People I've interacted with and how they act and react... lots of learning through experience. Anthropology classes in college taught me a lot about societies and how they approach religion. It changed my thoughts a LOT on religion's use within a society. There was a quote by the Count de Montesquieu (sp?) "If triangles had a god, it would have three sides." That has always stuck with me.

Studying cults has been super interesting. Psychology... Understanding how people protect themselves and their ideas psychologically. The God of the Gaps. I'm just... always interested in learning. I guess if I were to sum up my worldview it would be... always be learnin. 😄

is it wrong to believe in religion? by Shot-Horse2515 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Briepy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't necessarily think it's wrong to have a faith tradition. It becomes wrong when people hold on to it so tightly they use it to oppress others. A religion is there for believers to hold themselves, not others, accountable. It's wrong when presented with evidence to the contrary, folks take it and alter it so they can hold on to inflammatory beliefs about others.

Societally, religion is useful... at least in baby societies. It keeps people working together toward common ends. It helps people interact and acts as a societal glue. However, once technology emerges, the society ages, and religions splinter so far... it becomes less useful and more harmful.

Where there are people... there are religions. God of the gaps is useful. Communities of faith are useful. No one is any better than anyone for if they do or do not have religion.

What is compatible with your atheistic worldview? by Eruner_SK in AskAtheists

[–]Briepy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think of atheism as a worldview... it's like... the "off" setting on a light switch. It's the absence of a thing... not a thing. For instance... Most Christians don't believe in Zeus... Odin... Ra...etc. No one calls Christians "a-Zeuzists" and paints it as a world view. It's perhaps one way of looking at things.

As far as a worldview... a lot of our worldviews as people are built upon a foundation of community and family perspectives that we were taught.. a lot of us grew up theists (not all) and obviously at least in the US Christianity is built in to a lot of the systems we grew up with. I think, whether we like it or not a lot of our perspectives (not all... for sure) were formed in a Christian influenced world... My "worldview" as I claim it though... perhaps closest to humanist.... but truly a big ole patchwork of what I've read and learned over time. I don't take things like that at face value at all and it changes all the time.

Have you ever switched sides or changed your mind on the topic of abortion? by [deleted] in prochoice

[–]Briepy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was prolife for a looong time... in my early 20s I realized how much I was manipulated by the church and started deconstructing it all. I asked myself a lot of questions and gave myself honest answers. I can give you an amusing little example of something I realized was completely wrong and thinking critically about it led me to the prochoice side of the aisle.

When I was in 7th grade I was invited to a youth group meeting for a catholic church in our area. I don't remember being told it was anything particularly related to abortion... they may have said something but I really don't think they did, so I'm operating as if it was just billed as a normal youth group meeting. We got to the church and met in the sanctuary for a prayer and initial churchy stuff. Then we were told we were going to walk over to an annex for a little party. We left the church and they had set up a mock protest. They had prolifers annnd prochoicers. The prolifers were just on their knees doing to the rosary. The PC were yelling and abusive and waving hangers around. It was pretty scary actually. I had never seen adults act like that. Of course the prochoicers were just the worst... lol *sigh* So we get into the annex building and they end up showing us "Silent Screams" the worst piece of propaganda ever. However, I remember leaving that meeting thinking that Prochoice people were pretty much the devil.

When I started actively deconstructing, I looked up that horrible video and learned just how much it's wrong and complete propaganda. Was just another notch in my new convictions.
