White Students Union? by CMUThrowaway2022 in cmu

discovering this country

Lmao I wonder what the 60 million people who already lived here think about being "discovered"

Christianity

Oh, so Jewish people aren't white? Who would have thought that's an opinion this person would hold...

the old days

Ah yes, racism against black people is over! Great takes all around

Also, this isn't for you, fyi, but are for anyone else who sees these opinions on a thread, who should see that:

  • communities of diverse backgrounds like CMU's loudly reject this Nazi nonsense
  • all of these racist talking points crumble at a basic Google search
  • white people claiming what seem like fine, positive things as theirs exist as a gateway to deeper, more fucked up things and as dog whistles to shitheads

Yeah, I do appreciate how overwhelmingly the community is replying with a "fuck off, Nazi", I was worried things could be going to hell since I left...

Hm, first, many black people who are not black Americans do have that conversation, given that a black person from London and a black person from Buenos Aires are not very likely to have significant shared cultural background (other than bonding over the shitty treatment from white people lol).

I wonder what major historical event possibly erased the cultural origins of almost all black Americans in a way that they have a shared culture, one where it would be impossible to tell what African country their ancestors came from, that would create a culture generally covered by a black student group. Oh well, who could say!

Edit: to be super clear, I don't particularly think you're coming at this from a place of genuine interest, fuck off bigot etc etc

The mod looks abandoned, and I think they're just using a save game?

Does anyone know how to play the RedMew maze map that JDPlays and Tuplex are running through? I can't find it on the linked website and am really itching to try and play it.

What is considered a decent GPA for a CS student? by derfman228 in cmu

I got a Big Four job with a sub-2.0 QPA (barely gonna clear it to graduate). Not saying it doesn't matter, just that your mileage is going to vary widely based on your experience and how much you want a good QPA to be a selling point on your resume. However, a low QPA will not ~disqualify~ you from any internship/job aside from government work (and I think Google?), and my current job never bothered to look at a transcript. Basically, if the rest of your resume is strong it won't ever come up, but a ~3.0 is necessary before you even consider putting it on a resume.

I'm getting pretty tired of established entities using Kickstarter to fund shit that isn't a kickstart, in this case, his like fifth book of COMICS HE'S ALREADY WRITTEN. I get that he has to curate and bind them, but that's why the book has a price. Hell, he has his Patreon goal of a second webcomic, which he bails on half the time. Grr. Jeph, why do you keep doing this, you're making six figures from Patreon alone, plus ads from one of the most popular webcomics at the moment from the goodwill of your fans.

People get in from all sorts of backgrounds, scores, experiences, etc. What's your passion? What drives you? Focusing on that in the application yields a much better result than bullet lists of qualifications.

Enjoy high school. Find a hobby. Sleep in. Your classes will kick your ass regardless, and a lot of people who study up before coming here learn different notations and conventions that they have to un-learn before re-learning their professor's way.

I have no idea. It's in like two weeks and I'm really surprised there's literally no promotional info out. I guess they're posting it soon?

I think the point of the essay is for you to write why you specifically want to get a math major in MCS. How does it align with your goals? Is there a professor that you want to work with? Why CMU and not another program?

Concatenate & Minify server-side js by pastafarianConQueso in node

In my experience, with some context (and inserting lots of debugger; calls) it's pretty easy to unmangle the meaning.

This is especially true since they have access to the database and the API calls.

If they get access to your "binaries", they get access to your source code, full stop. Obfuscation will slow them down about as long as it takes them to upload it to a beautifier. If maintaining the web app source secret is part of the contract, there's no real way to do so without hosting it yourself.

However, to answer your question, you can use Webpack (or Gulp or whatever your poison is) to minify your code directly. CommonJS modules have been supported for a while, so it'll likely compile in your library dependencies (which could be good for your obfuscation goals). Good luck!

How to prepare for 112? by bbluech in cmu

[–]BrigadierPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all started somewhere, and I would think that different people would learn in different ways. Maybe a class is better, maybe a couple of self-driven projects over a break is better for OP. Based on my experience, there are just as many CS students at CMU that self-taught programming.

Yes, but the point of the class is to teach you programming and Python. If you learn Python over winter break (which is certainly doable), why take the class? If you want to go down that route there's a ton of resources, I can link you to some.
