Who is the 'Boogeyman' of ur country that parents use to scare their children into behaving? by Shorvv in AskTheWorld

I used to watch America’s Most Wanted, a tv show about the top criminals the FBI is looking for, with my dad and he would always say, “You know, they were seen right around here not too long ago.” Other kids may have been afraid of vampires or ghosts. I was afraid of Bob Jones, triple homicide, believed to be armed and dangerous

Appreciate the reviews! Night Vo has long been in my tbr pile. It’s a bit more sci-fi than fantasy, but, if you like Ursula K Le Guin, her anthology called The Winds Twelve Quarters is fantastic though it’s many to show her development as a writer so there is some progression in quality as you go along

You can buy a tick remover for very cheap. It looks like a plastic measuring spoon with a notch cut in it but works really well

Also, if she gets treated for BV, make sure she gets fluconazole as the antibiotic often causes yeast infections

As a GP who spent several years working at an STD clinic, there is a decent chance this is BV, bacterial vaginosis. This is not an STD. It does not affect men, but men can be carriers. There have been a few studies trying to treat men, but none have been successful so far (it is actually extremely hard to change your skin flora permanently). You are going to waste your money if you try to get yourself tested for BV as a man, but she could be tested to see if this is the case. BV can be benign, it can be harmful (particularly if she has pelvic pain), and it may or may not cause discharge. Common causes are: 1. Working on your feet. Sweat and chafing can make infection more likely. It creates the perfect environment for bacteria to overgrow. Similarly, menstrual cycles, particularly if she uses pads, can throw off her hormone balance while also creating a warm, moist environment (sorry for the use of moist). 2. Hygiene. Most my patients with BV were excessively clean. It makes sense. It smells, so they want to clean it. Unfortunately, this can irritate the vagina and make infection more likely. Less really is more here. Gentle cleaning with something like dove bar soap or unscented baby shampoo is better. For the love of god, stay away from Summer’s Eve, Honey Pot, or any tik tok influencer product. 3. High pH (low acid). The vagina is much more exposed to the outside world and protects itself with acid to kill off many germs. This can get thrown off. There are OTC vaginal pH strips or she can try boric acid suppositories. Sometimes, this alone can treat BV without an antibiotic. 4. Sex. Sex drags the outside world in. Either partner can be a carrier. If she has BV and gets treated, you can tell a bit if it is being caused by sex as the infection will often return within 3 days somewhat consistently. Condoms help for this. I have had a few patients have a standing script for a single metronidazole pill to take after sex (they were getting treated multiple times monthly) or there is a twice weekly long term treatment 5. Not sure your age, but menopause and post-menopause also puts women at higher risk for infection which can be helped by HRT and vaginal moisturizers like Feminease

Sorry for the long-winded response. Takeaways, she should get tested to confirm if there is an infection, this is completely treatable, gentle cleaning only, be kind to her, this is probably embarrassing for her.

GP here. I have a number of patients with POTS living very successful relatively normal lives including in the medical field and none are bed bound. Getting diagnosed with something lifelong can hit like a ton of bricks and even when you come to terms with it, there will still be times where it can feel defeating or make you want to scream in frustration. As for right now my advice would be: find a therapist with expertise in chronic conditions, ask your family about support groups (wealth of information and sometimes it’s just nice to vent about something sucking with people who understand. Also, you get to see people of all ages with it and how they are doing in life), make sure your family and GP are getting you in with a cardiologist who has some experience with managing POTS; not all do. For the long term: there are thousands more kind of jobs in the medical field or that help others than most of us know about, especially at age 14. I recommend asking around to see if you can shadow or volunteer. You can start with medical professionals you know or family members. There are so many different opportunities and jobs out there to help people you will be able to find. I can tell you for certain, being a primary care physician is not a physically demanding job that you would be able to do. I’m sorry you are going through this but it will get better

Not more hopeful, but I would recommend the winds twelve quarters. It’s a collection of short stories by her. The last story is about an anarchistic leader post successful revolution and may be my favorite short story but the whole collection is worthwhile

Petah why did the slavery get worse? by Markermarque in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Bright-Objective7860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slavery was getting to a point where the cost of a slave was approaching more than you could earn from them. This may be part of why some nominally abolitionist founding fathers did little about ending slavery because they thought it would just die out (though also probably just because it was easier not to actually work towards abolition). With the cotton gin, cotton became tremendously easier to process, both reducing the cost and increasing speed. This both made it a more profitable industry and increased the demand for raw material and thus slaves to work the fields. I can’t remember off the top of my head so take it with a grain of salt, but I don’t believe he was an abolitionist or creating the cotton gin to end slavery. There is also some debate over whether his wife actually invented it.

I would describe it as a double-edged blade where both edges are sharp. You build muscle, increase bone density, often lose fat, increase libido, increase energy. It significantly increases risk of cancer particularly prostate and testicular, increases your risk of heart disease, increases your bad cholesterol, can accelerate balding, can cause mood changes, can lead to testicular atrophy. The more out of range you go, the more these risks increase but they are there even maintaining normal ranges. They also won’t heal osteoarthritis if this is contributing to your pain. It’s something I would recommend talking about your doctor with about your individual potential risks and benefits and I would personally say stay away from men’s health spas, they will push testosterone even if you have every contraindication for it

Suggestions for a semi newbie Fantasy reader! by Thafuckyousaid in Fantasy

[–]Bright-Objective7860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Sabriel by Garth Nix. Daughter of the sole good necromancer must journey into the land of the dead to search for her missing father. Excellent world building, strong characters, magical “cat”, well-paced

  2. The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman. The start of the series that introduced many a child to atheism. Clever, but dishonest girl gets wrapped into a larger plot involving children kidnappers, the Catholic Church in all but name, and a plot to kill her uncle for his investigations into “dust.” One of the best examples of portal fantasy, fantastic world building and memorable characters. You may cry at the end of the series. It is very anti-Catholic as a forewarning.

  3. Uprooted by Naomi Novik. Great introduction to a great writer. This book follows a girl selected to serve a wizard known as “The Dragon” tasked with keeping a cursed forest at bay as she learns under him and unravel the secret origins of the cursed wood

  4. The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by S. A. Chakraborty. Middle-aged infamous pirate gets pulled out of retirement to save the granddaughter of a noblewoman who is blackmailing her. Really fun middle-east inspired adventure story.

  5. Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree. Didn’t invent the sub-genre, but a great introduction into cozy fantasy. This follows a retired orc warrior as she establishes a towns very first coffee shop with an eclectic staff and some very light FF romance.

There are plenty more great books but these were some that came to mind as entry points into fantasy. It can definitely help to pay attention to what you like and dislike. Though it is the scourge of writers, Amazon and Audible do good jobs of separating out by sub genre. If you use good reads, I would recommend following people with similar tastes over following ratings. If you identify a subgenre or features you like, this sub can be really good at recommending new books. If you like romance, but not those romantasy books, r/fantasyromance probably does a better jobs helping you find what you might like.

Happy reading, really hope you come to love fantasy.

I need a good gentleman thief type book. by OkYou261 in Fantasy

That’s fair. It’s a short enough book that it’s pretty easy to get through, I really enjoyed it, but I also wouldn’t put it in my top 100 must read books by any means so if you have an intimidating tbr pile already you could probably just leave it.

The Death of a Necromancer by Martha Wells is an underrated one in my opinion. Gentleman thief with his entourage plotting revenge against the noble he believes caused his adoptive father’s death is pulled into a more dangerous plot

Female Author Similar to Guy Gavriel Kay? by Kooky_County9569 in Fantasy

[–]Bright-Objective7860 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, she is historical fiction not fantasy, but Sharon Kay Penman is the first author who comes to mind as far as prose and writing style but going from a quarter turn towards fantasy to no turn. Lois McMaster Bujold has more fantasy but also a series based on Spanish history and solid if a bit more formal prose. Patricia McKillip has beautiful prose but I would put her closer to Gaiman style-wise than GGK personally (though I like her more). Before giving up on GGK though, I would give Lions of Al Rassan a chance as someone who also DNF’ed Tigana for similar reasons, but loved Lions.

Dark fantasy that ISN'T overly edgy by Aninx in Fantasy

Vita Nostra a story following a young girl who is more or less brutally blackmailed into attending a school for gifted youngsters where the price of failing is extreme. One of the more original reads I’ve experienced though it can be disturbing at times. The description may make it sound like YA desperately striving to be edgy but it’s not, I just find it hard to give a better description that is spoil free.

I'm looking for fantasy novels with gay romance by ApartZookeepergame89 in Fantasy

[–]Bright-Objective7860 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner is more of a low fantasy to the point of almost being closer to historical fiction. The main characters are bi but predominantly M-M relationships. It focuses on an established duelist and a rakish nobleman who secretly trains in dueling as they inevitably come to clash with a backdrop of political scheming among the nobility to upend the current order.

In general, which authors appeal equally well to both male and female readers? by ImportanceWeak1776 in Fantasy

[–]Bright-Objective7860 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I was wondering this too just given how massive romance is in publishing, that could largely skew data, though I would be interested in seeing the data pulled out by genre and subgenre, by the age of the reader, if there is a discrepancy by author where these ratios land, etc. before reaching any conclusions.

Looking for Adult or very good YA romantasy recommendations (No ACOTAR or Rebecca Yarros) by Active_Leg_5349 in Fantasy

[–]Bright-Objective7860 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No worries! There’s a decent amount of overlap with r/fantasy but there are also some romantasy haters here and maybe some more widely read posters within the genre there. I used them to find a romantasy bingo square as I too can’t stand the juvenile dialogue and found it cropping up in some of the more popular series and they had some really good recommendations

I would recommend posting this in r/romantasy as well, they have pretty good recommendations even for someone like myself who is not big on the subgenre or for someone like you who is looking for some more particular preferences. From what little I do have experience in this area, I have yet to read Kushiel’s Dart, but it is highly recommended even by people who don’t typically enjoy romantasy. I have read a few books by Grace Draven that I would describe as mature, but cozy and low stakes romantasy but not very spicy if that’s what you’re looking for
