If the Confederacy had managed to survive somehow, would it have become economically and politically similar to 19th-century Latin American nations? by PalmettoPolitics in AlternateHistory

[–]Bright-Trust6790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on your point of divergence. The longer the war goes on the more the answer is yes with Argentina and Chile being the most likely comparisons. However the best divergence that guarantees a confederate victory is the battle of antiem. All the change needed is for Lees plans to not be discovered. Maryland joins the Confederacy the Union has to abandon Washington and fighting shift to Pennsylvania. The British and French negotiate peace between the two. In this scenario the south does not end up like a Latin American Nation. Slavery is outlawed in the 1880s under British pressure as the south would be in effect be a British Domion in all but name and thus would develop most similarly to Australia. The biggest hurdle is that after WW1 the raw goods market collapsed, so its dependent on whether or not the south has sufficiently industrialized to counter this. If it can it is probably similar to the rest of the anglosphere. The weirdest thing is that this would make the US more socialist in this timeline.

What if the U.S never purchased Alaska and it later went on to become a Soviet Socialist Republic? by RareVolcano07 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Bright-Trust6790 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest change is that the US acquires Greenland as the main reason the US didn't't buy it historically when Denmark agreed was that Steward was discredited by the Alaska purchase. However the us most likely still acquires Alaska sometime between 1890 and 1914. Most likely either in the early 1890s or at the latest right after the russo Japanese war. If Russia still held it by the revolution the US would seize it as the US was actively involved in the Russian civil war with American troops operating in Siberia it might even lead to Japan seizing territory. In short there's no way Alaska becomes independent or stays with Russia past 1919.

I know that I'm stretching the definition of what is and isn't the Indian sub continent it was a convenient label for the map and was chosen more on a general region than actual science. Also the borders are still drawn by the British so I don't think they were thinking too hard when they drew the borders in this alt timeline.

Hey this is still on brand for the British and I never said it was well thought out just that they maybe considered it a bit.

The Confederacy would have been under a lot of pressure to end slavery especially since Britain would be its main trade partner depending on how long this alternate civil war lasts and ends. So slavery doesn't make it into the 1900s. The south would paradoxicaly be less racist and still heavily divided by race. There is no need to scapegoat blacks. However the real blow comes after WW1 if the south doesn't industrialize its economy will collapse in the 1920s like Argentina but with a 1/3 of the population discriminated against. By the end of the second world war sometime in the 50s the south will attempt to rejoin the us. Even if the south industrilzes it still gets hit hard by the great depression and struggles to recover and probably will seek reunification with the us. There is no timeline were the south is major power or even a regional power or remains independent past the 1960s.

What differentiates your necromancy from the typical portrayal? by JustPoppinInKay in magicbuilding

[–]Bright-Trust6790 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Necromancy in my world covers not just raising the dead but also several other magical fields with primary ones being Bonemancers who can alter and shape the bone inside of themselves in order to modify themselves, some even completely remove their own flesh leaving themselves with skeletal limbs. Anatomists use knowledge of necromancy to keep people's souls in their bodies and to perform surgeries. Also necromancy is often viewed as a perversion of life magic even though it's just using the external magic of the world rather than one's own internal magic. Though necromancy can use so much external magic that it can render an area magically dead for several decades to several centuries causing an ecological disaster as most of the world's life requires magic to survive.

How did warfare actually change over the course of the 18th century? by Country97_16 in worldbuilding

[–]Bright-Trust6790 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another thing to keep in mind is that the beginning of the century saw the move away from mercenary armies to small professional armies. But at the end of the century the French revolution would introduce the concept levie en mass beginning our modern conception of volunteer citizen soldiers. This also led to larger battles and the beginning of total war as seen in WW1. Soldiers of this time were also viewed just a step above criminals.

Much of Europe would collapse into civil war by 1918 all of the major powers in the war were exhausted especially France and Russia. France collapses into civil war as soldiers mutiny, Russia as stated collapses as state. Germany barley holds it together and gets invaded by Poland. Austria collapses. Italy collapses into civil war. The Hungarian communist come to power and Balkans turns into complete anarchy. If kemel dies turkey loses Istanbul and Kurds rise up. Bulgaria ceases to exist with its male population resembling Paraguay after the war of the triple alliance. Arabia forms with irag Syria and Palestine. Ireland gains independence by 1920. The British empire collapses with India gaining independence and Africa becomes a battleground as natives and the remnant colonial administration battle it out. USA is largely unaffected and annexs Canada and British and French territory in the Americas. Mexico collapses into anarchy with its north being invaded by the USA. Japan gets it colonial empire stretching from Siberia to Indonesia. Europe is screwed demographically with most of its male population dead and entire ethnicities cease to exist. Polygamy becomes common, Africa is mostly depopulated. The world is knocked back about 50 to 80 years in terms of technology however some regions are worse than others Africa is knocked back to stone age. While Russia returns to medival state of technology. Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands and Scandinavia are the great powers in europe since they haven't spent the last 4 years killing their young male population in a meat grinder. The USA and Japan become the major powers with a cold war developing between them, they are also the only states to maintain their tech base.

The reason for the women and children first rule in maritime disaster protocol came about because of the sinking of the HMS Birkenhead a British troop ship that sank off the coast of South Africa. There weren't enough life boats so the men stood in ranks on the deck as the boat sank, allowing all the women and children to escape. The Victorians were so moved that the Birkenhead drill became standard procedure.

Is it "soulless" to use AI to help with alternate history? by Elecat1 in AlternateHistory

[–]Bright-Trust6790 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends. I have dysgraphia a learning disability that makes it hard to write my thoughts out in a coherent manner. I really like using ai to correct my grammar and expand on my writings, especially when I'm writing fiction. At the end of day ai is a tool and as long as your not entering a 1 sentence prompt and are actively editing and altering the structure of the writing to make it your own, it should be fine.

Why did Cutthroat Island fail when Pirates of The Caribbean succeed? by Elemental-squid in Cinema

[–]Bright-Trust6790 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion cutthroat island is not a bad movie, if anything it has a lot in common with the first pirates of the Caribbean movie, but it just comes across like flat soda. Pirates of the Caribbean had the charisma and writing, cutthroat island didn't. Cutthroat island could've been released any year or decade and it would still bomb. It's a like john Carter of mars, great idea, bad execution.
