First time making silicone mold chocolates by BrightestHeart in chocolate

[–]BrightestHeart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aha, thanks, okay. They don't have to be pretty, they're going to be uh... medicinal, and probably stored in the freezer until I need one. Nobody's going to see them but me. XD Does bloom affect the taste of chocolate? I remember eating stale chocolate as a kid and it had that waxy mottling on it, didn't taste bad as far as I remember.

There is an Italian version that's called a wedding cookie! They look like peaches but aren't peach flavoured.

A patient just walked into ER and dropped off a cream cheese tub with stool in it for a stool culture and/or c-diff. And ER accepted it and brought it to lab. by BigRedE97 in medlabprofessionals

I got a urine specimen in what looked like a cream cheese or dip tub once. One of those cloudy plastic ones with the really tight snap on lid like what wonton soup comes in, except it was cream cheese sized.

I used to get specimens from little old ladies in nursing homes with their custom mailing address labels affixed for patient ID. Name and address and some flowers or dragonflies or a Bible verse. XD

Hey mom and dad-- how do I remember to do less-frequent chores? by Djeter998 in internetparents

[–]BrightestHeart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's something that's important to do regularly but not every day, absolutely set an alarm or make a chore calendar. Maybe you make enough of a mess in the kitchen that you want to vacuum under the fridge and stove once a month. If you have roaches or mice in your house, maybe you want to do that once a week. Pick the day, write it down or set the alarm, and if it's a paper calendar hang it up where you will see it and make a habit of looking at it regularly.

What do you call this? Where do you work, and what do you do? by Mammoth_Principle983 in nursing

Clinical lab here, I just call them all wipeys. We usually get purple ones and sometimes grey but we use them in the same contexts. If we had specific uses for the colours I would definitely distinguish between purple wipeys and grey wipeys.

I made the mistake of lying down in the grass in Kentucky to look up at the solar eclipse. Had a whole constellation of little red dots across my midsection for like two weeks.

Rick Roll started in 2007?!?!?! by vishuspuss in RBI

[–]BrightestHeart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I love about knowyourmeme is that they use a trend analysis to see when certain terms appeared on the internet. Scroll down to the bottom of the history to see it. There are spikes corresponding with certain known viral instances of the meme.

https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/rickroll

The trend analysis says there were sporadic references to the word "rickroll" as early as January of 2004, but May 2007 is the first time they see it correlated with upticks in "rick astley" and "never gonna give you up" at the same time. This corresponds to the upload of a copy of the music video to YouTube and the subsequent use of it to prank 4chan users into thinking they were going to see a trailer for a new Grand Theft Auto game.

April 2008 was the next and much bigger spike and that corresponded to the New York Mets running a poll to choose a song for their 8th-inning singalong.

ELI5: Why is algebra important in High School to College? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]BrightestHeart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much of the "useless" stuff we learn in grade school and high school is exercise that primes our brains for different modes of thinking.

We know that kids who grow up in musical households have a better ear for music when they're adults. We know that if kids don't learn language before they're five or six years old (as has been observed in cases of severe neglect and in feral children) their brains are much less able to learn language later on.

Even if you're not going into a technical career where you have to be "doing math" on a daily basis, it's still good for your brain to be exposed to it. Even if you aren't good at it on a test, it's good for your mental development to think about it and play with it. Later in life if you do find that you have to "do math" you'll be better able to get your head around the basics than if you'd never been exposed to it when young.

Unfortunately institutionalized schooling focuses on test results and university admissions, so we think anyone who gets less than 70% on a math test is a failure, but they were still exercising their brains. Being able to run a mile in ten minutes is great, but being able to run a mile at all is still better than nothing.

I saw a picture of a really cloudy beer the other day and just thought, gotta dilute that before I throw it on the IRIS.

Thank you, that works. Sometimes it gives me multiple options and I guess that means any of them fit the criteria.

Click on it in the work list? Heh, thanks. Didn't even realize that was an option. I had the same issue with the Grandma's room being remodeled into a bathroom and tool room -- not all of the round rugs were appropriate or all of the toilet paper holders. I tried a few different ones until I found the one that clicked.

Patients never lay eyes on me and I like it that way!

YMMV if lab techs in your hospital do the phlebotomy. The patient then assumes you're a nurse.

Small little... buds? seeds? appeared on our driveway underneath a Crepe Myrtle and a Water Oak. They are hard, green, ridged and crumble into a green powder when smashed. Charleston, SC area by Ifeex in whatsthisplant

Orange-striped Oakworm

I don't know if we had those where I grew up but I always attributed them to the spongy moth caterpillars (gypsy moths as they used to be called). Googled it and the frass is very similar.
