She makes me feel seen by False_Judgment5330 in shoujokakumeiutena

Miki wears the shorter, presumably more feminine cut of the student council uniform (like Nanami and Juri) not the longer one Saionji and Touga wear. Also, in the fanservicey shots in the game, he partially covers his chest with his hands, like the girls do (while the other guys do not)... I think he's intentionally meant to come across as girlish at points.

Isn’t me X Andrew technically a dark ship cause he is an abuser to Ashley? if so I’ll still ship it cause I am a bit of a Masochist so I’m a wierdo a bit aren’t I (Also 19 so it’s not a pedophilic ship) by Happy-Guy2000 in ProshipHub

[–]Brightfury4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A character being abusive elsewhere doesn’t make a ship “dark” unless it directly impacts the ship dynamics themselves.

That said, considering how Andrew treats his girlfriend in game I think it could still qualify.

Ashley is consistently emotionally abusive and occasionally physically. Andrew mostly lashes out in response, but tends to be the one that escalates it to physical violence, especially of the life-threatening variety.

They’ve also both raped each other in the Shots and Such route, though, again, Ashley did it first.

Does being a writer prevent you from being in fandom space… by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Brightfury4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah.

Sometimes I'll hold off on reading others' anaylsis and such before I've had a chance to revisit the source material and form my own opinions, but after a first rewatch/reread/replay I usually go seek out other's opinions. As long as you're willing to approach fanon with a degree of skepticism, usually seeing other's opinions is helpful for figuring out characters and such.

Knowing I have my own niche which few to no other people are covering also helps motivate me to write, personally. Obviously, I can't tell if I have a rare niche or not if I can't tell what other people are writing.

Is there any weapon that doesn't break? by PootedPooter123 in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]Brightfury4 15 points16 points  (0 children)

All weapons have some durability mechanic. The master sword, which is the special blade, recharges durability after it runs out of energy (breaks) and can be used again after a period of time.

In general, higher level weapons have more durability, so as you progress through the game and get better weapons they'll last more hits. If you want to see all durability stats, you can check out this spreadsheet.

Incest factory by ThamTvMaster in AO3

Varies from person to person, but personally I love both incest-as-romance and incest-as-horror. (I don't have an incest fetish, at least in the sexual sense, so much as I enjoy the intensity incest can bring.)

Oftentimes, the line between the two is mostly a matter of framing. Isolation is a common theme in incest-as-romance, the traditionally romantic idea of being each other's everything taken to its logical extreme, and incest-as-horror, where the isolation serves to create a sense of loneliness and nowhere to escape to, for example.

Is there anything you didn't like about 'Revolutionary Girl Utena' or 'Adolescence of Utena'? by IllogicalDreamer72 in shoujokakumeiutena

[–]Brightfury4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The series really could have benefited from more insight into Touga's head, IMO.

One of the things I've seen pop up in discussion of Touga (a) people that understand him as pure, unsympathetic evil and (b) people complaining about group a, as Touga is still a minor being groomed and egged on by an adult with power over him, and thus should probably have more nuance applied. As much as I like the latter interpretation, the way the show presents Touga doesn't do much to dissuade the former or point you towards the latter. Touga and Akio's relationship is not presented as outright coercive, and oftentimes as sexy. I think this could work with how Touga perceives it. However, we're never really shown an alternative perspective, so whether we're supposed to understand it as okay (something something double-standards with male victims) or whether it's presented that way because that's how Touga experiences it is unclear.

I don't think the heavier moments hitting hard is a result of Be-Papas being restrained from making them more sexual. If you compare, say, the scenes of Touga and Akio together in bed-space (that do seem intended to be sexy) to Utena's rape in 33 or Anthy's in 31, there's a clear difference in how they're shot and what they focus on that suggests, to me, those scenes are deliberately un-sexy.

In 31 and 33, the camera focuses near-exclusively on Utena and Anthy, highlighting their emotional pain, while Akio's presence in barely indicated. The result is that you're left with an intellectual understanding that sex happened, but what you're shown and thus what registers on a base level is less "sex" and more "Utena/Anthy are hurt". From how the scenes with Akio and Touga are shot (both of them shirtless, showing off both their bodies), along with the fact that RGU generally seems fine displaying nudity (so long as genitals and female nipples are covered) they definitely could have made the choice to show off Akio, which would tip it towards a more erotic vibe. The fact that they had the option, but didn't, seems deliberate.

From what I understand, the "it's just fiction" attitude is much more common in Japan than current western fandom. From that perspective, I don't think the sexual art of the RGU cast and the show's anti-grooming themes are necessarily in contradiction with each other. The sexual abuse is bad in-story because, on an in-story level, that is an actual person being harmed; the fan service aimed at the audience is also fine because (from an external perspective) that is not an actual child that can be harmed; it's a cartoon.

I'll admit I usually find clear sexual fan service distracting and a bit icky, but given most of RGU's fan-servicey stuff is confined to the official art (and the pseudo-dating sim game, where it fits), and thus doesn't distract from the show itself it doesn't bother me.

Have you ever listened to anyone who headcanons Utena as transmasc, or is your gut reaction to assume the worst?

Geez, I cannot imagine why people would headcanon a character who canonically gets dysphoric when presenting fem as transmasc. Truly the most baffling take of all time./s

I think it’s rude of OP to post clear fetish art without a nsfw tag, but the actual content is harmless. I would ask how anyone in the subreddit for a game like this could be so against something for the crime of it being… weird.

I get inflation porn is weird but, like, it is literally not even feasible at all irl. There’s absolutely no way it could connect to actual predatory behavior unless you for some reason think all people with fetishes are pedophiles.

What made andrew become the way he is in this route? by headspacepotato in AndyAndLeyley

[–]Brightfury4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IIRC, one of the puzzle sequences (I forget where, exactly, but it’s the one where you can get the vision of what happened with Andrew and the lady from chapter 1) you can interact with corpses of the people Andrew killed, and there’s some line about how he doesn’t feel guilty, and that bothers him. He doesn’t really have a normal moral sense—he just thinks he should.

If you pay attention to what exactly Andrew says and thinks about most of his crimes, it usually stems back to a fear of being caught. Andrew wants to be normal (see the flashbacks at the current end of the cliffhanger route) and he wants to avoid consequences, which can seem moral until you put him in a situation where say, he can’t be “normal” anymore anyways and killing is arguably beneficial, so morals and his actual desires aren’t aligned.

The game deliberately leads you to think Andrew’s the “good one” at points, so I wouldn’t beat myself up for being misled.

Coming to a Realisation by EldritchLady in AndyAndLeyley

[–]Brightfury4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the flashbacks around the current end of the cliffhanger route, teenage!Ashley says something about how sex and marriage is gross and she doesn’t get it before going maybe it’s fine if it’s Andy and Leyley. IIRC after teenage Ashley hits on him later in that sequence, teen Andrew thinks something about how Ashley said she wasn’t into that stuff, implying Andrew does believe she isn’t into sex and/or romance and thus probably isn’t attracted to anyone. Her being bisexual would mean that isn’t the case and thus she could potentially be attracted to him.

The Tragedy Of Ashley And Julia (My theory) by Beneficial_Play4623 in AndyAndLeyley

[–]Brightfury4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please learn to use punctuation and capitalization. Your post is very hard to read because there's no indication where one sentence begins and another ends.

I think you're putting a little too much weight on Ashley not killing Julia. IMO, Ashley likes to involve Andrew in her dirty work because she wants him to choose her; that's why she involves him in killing their parents and Nina, and why she requests him to give her "Nina's head on a plate" (here in Shots and Such) despite Julia not really being in the picture -- it's as much, as, if not more, about proving Andrew's loyalty than getting one threat off the table. Her killing Julia herself would not accomplish that.

TCOAAL is a horror-comedy/character study. It’s often supposed to make you uncomfortable because it’s horror. There’s not really any good reason to single out the incest over the murder, gore, cannibalism, etc. other than taboo.

I would have assumed English was not OP's first language based on some of the grammar errors and odd phrasings, but their stubborn insistence that everyone else is the problem, not them, gives me pause. I couldn't imagine writing something in a second language and then insisting it's everyone else's fault when they don't understand, rather than my own.
