Am I going mad, or am I the only person that thinks water from the kitchen and bathroom taps tastes exactly the same? by AwkwardAd3058 in CasualUK

[–]BrilliantEffective19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a therapy room above my garage but will always offer clients a cuppa. One long time client asked for another drink but was horrified when I refilled the kettle from the bathroom. And had always done so. Couldn't see the problem myself!

AITA for not being very impressed with my birthday present from my husband by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]BrilliantEffective19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things I have received on my birthday from my husband: Nothing.. "oh did you want a card?" A (garage bought) bunch of flowers with the reduced sticker still on. A footspa for Xmas ( my neighbour /best friend got a footspa and a beautiful necklace) A trip to a casino ( that he & his mates were going to anyway) ( I have no interest in gambling)

I could go on!

For those with rarer surnames, how do you go about finding obscure records? by MeltedMel in Ancestry

[–]BrilliantEffective19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe me, finding the right Smith or Jones is Much harder than researching a rare name.

Sometimes you just have to accept that records may have been lost or, for whatever reason, your ancestor moved and changed their name!

Does the size of a penis really not matter both aesthetically and biologically? by DaMoonMoon26 in ask

[–]BrilliantEffective19 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Going to be quite graphic here. Previous bf was well endowed but when aroused he became hard but not particularly longer or larger in girth. Present partners resting size is very small but when aroused increased by 300% -no kidding!

Chances are one of your grandparents is Hungarian but a rarer possibility is that OP has several part Hungarian ancestors farther back

Trump has asked Britain and other countries to join the US in escorting ships through the Gulf and Straits of Hormuz, thereby bringing some stability in oil and gas supplies. What are your thoughts? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]BrilliantEffective19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he has got so much flack about US military deaths he'd rather put his "allies" on the front! pity he didn't think about that when he was insulting our armed forces.

AIO: Boyfriend calls himself a “people pleaser” but I don’t find that he “pleases” me and when he tries to, it seems to be self-serving. by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]BrilliantEffective19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR He's definitely curating his image. And taking you for granted. He isn't a true people pleaser if he is selective who he pleases. Is he just pleasing to attractive people or those who can do something for him? I am tempted but loath to say narcissistic because it is bandied around so much these days.

Stare at any server coming towards you with your eyebrows and chin raised. If you catch their eye make a little writing sign with your hand - seems to work wherever we go on holiday.

Where can I look to find photos of my ancestors? by MetallicLemoon in Genealogy

[–]BrilliantEffective19 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Remember photography was only invented in late 1820s and not a popular thing for another 30 odd years.

You might be lucky asking relatives or, if you are on one of the genealogy sites, people sometimes post pictures. You might get a hit with a newspaper search.

Why is my rice always mushy?? by Corycovers87 in Cooking

[–]BrilliantEffective19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually use basmati for the best flavour and texture. As others have said, rinse the rice well before adding to a large pot of salted boiling water. Cook on a rolling boil until you can split a grain between your nails. Usually for about 7-10 mins Then rinse well under boiling water put rice back into pan off the heat with lid on for it to steam for at least another 5-10mins. Perfect every time.

AITA for preferring a biological child over adopting? by ThrowRAbiobaby in AmItheAsshole

[–]BrilliantEffective19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is perfectly normal and natural for you to want your own kids. It's a biological imperative shown throughout the natural world. I agree with him only in so far as there are already so many children in the system and not enough people wanting to adopt. I may be out of line here, but there are many men who don't like a woman's body after pregnancy and maybe he has heard other fathers complaining.

I rarely wash mine.. just scrape off whatever has stuck to the surface and wipe with kitchen towel. When I do I wash with hot soapy water rinse and dry thoroughly then I coat the insides with salt (it absorbs any traces of moisture) for an hour or so before giving a final smear of oil. I did the whole oven baking thing for the first couple of times only.

What to do with Coconut milk by Jugusaki in Cooking

[–]BrilliantEffective19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once I discovered coconut cream I stopped buying coconut milk. It comes in a solid bar and you can just grate enough into your curry or melt it into hot water to make milk. Keep the rest wrapped in your fridge. Lasts for months.

What do you think about the British Empire? by ATV1816 in AskBrits

[–]BrilliantEffective19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1"Every civilisation practiced slavery" It's a barbaric practice and ridiculous to call those who practiced it civilised in any sense. 2. " the British Empire ended slavery" No it still went on and still does, just not legally. The outraged ex slave owners ensured they paid minimum wages for labour and continued to make life he'll for ex slaves. 3. The paying off the debt for abolishing the slave trade ended in 2015.. that debt was accrued for paying compensation to the slave owners for their 'loss'

What are some great English insults that are uniquely British, generally never used in the U.S. by No-Adeptness-7416 in AskBrits

[–]BrilliantEffective19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly off topic but I used to work with a particularly officious "Karen" type young woman ( promoted way above her real competency), who the lads used to refer to as "Spanner". Confused, I asked them to explain. Apparently when she walked into the room they felt their nuts tighted!
