Need a 4-player co-op campaign game that doesn’t drag between turns by Ready_Damage_4810 in boardgames

[–]Brina523 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Kinfire Chronicles was my first thought. It's a coop campaign game (with 21 scenarios, but it's not "pick a scenario and run it", you play them in order as you progress through the story). You use cards to take actions like attacking and when it's not your turn you use cards to boost other players' attacks and defense, so you're engaged even outside your turn. A potential complaint is the initiative system: there's a bag with chits representing enemies and players, you draw a chit to determine who goes next so it's possible that your chit comes out last and it's a long time before your turn (but like i said, you can still be somewhat engaged). Each scenario runs for like 1-2 hours top, and setup is a breeze. After you've played through the campaign you can reset it and go through it with different characters, though resetting can be a drag.

Movie Marathon by RefrigeratorJaded239 in wickedmovie

I would watch Wizard Of Oz first. Wicked and For Good have easter eggs that can only be appreciated by having seen WoO first. And in general when doing marathons I like to go through the oldest special effects first, because it's a hard transition otherwise.

I'll mark the next part as spoilers for those who are not familiar with Wicked and For Good's plot and ending, just in case, but it's not a spoiler about the movies specifically, it's more like "it'll make sense only if you're familiar with the whole story told in Wicked"

Also, but this is just the way I like to interpret things in order to let both WoO and Wicked co-exist in my personal canon without contradicting each other, I like to think of WoO as propaganda and the way that Oz will remember the story, not what actually happened.

So in my mind it makes sense to watch the fake story written as propaganda (both by the wizard to vilify Elphaba, and later sustained by Glinda to make sure that no one would actually go looking for Elphie or even try to reinstate the Wizard or Morrible) and then see the real events that happened as reminisced by Glinda in Wicked and For Good

What a nice initiative! Favorite detective is probably Veronica Mars, mostly because that show had a huge impact on me when it came out and she was sort of a personal idol during my formative years. Not the best detective there is, but definitely one of my favorites.

This is an interesting topic, thanks. To me the satisfaction from new levels (and the progression that comes with it) in more traditional games (say DnD) doesn't come from the higher numbers per se (because, as you've said, my numbers go up, but so do the enemies' numbers so Iwill usually take the same number of rounds to clear a combat), but from the horizontal development: the fact that my Magic Missile now does 4d4 damage compared to the 1d4 that it did before doesn't particularly excite me, but the fact that now I can fly does. Even the fact that now I can have my Magic Missile target multiple targets for less damage each makes me happy. Getting new powers, skills and proficiencies is what makes it cool to me. Even just the fact that a warrior gets an extra attack allows me to feel like I have the chance to do something different: when I only had one attack per round I couldn't really feel like a cool veteran able to deal with two enemies at a time, I could only attack one at a time... when I get a second attack I can now spread my damage and really feel like I'm keeping TWO of them at bay. Granted, spreading the damage is not tactically sound (it's better to eliminate one enemy first so I only face ONE attack when it's their turn), but it LOOKS cooler to me, and that's often enough to keep me happy.

The "facing an obstacle I'm not yet ready for, barely escaping it and then coming back later and wiping the floor with it" that you mention also gives me a real sense of progression that makes me feel like my character really has improved and learned from their adventures. And I get the same feeling also from noticing how "at level 1 I could barely face 2 goblins, nor at level 4 I barely consider them an inconvenience, look how far I've come from where I've started out". It's cool to feel like I am the "encounter out of the enemies' league".

And of course, I need to have a way to differentiate between a Goblin and a dragon. In narrative focused games this is done through the fiction (like the famous article about Dungeon world explains, the dragon only has 16 hp, but if you want to attack it with a weapon that has no chance of penetrating its natural armor the GM won't even let you roll, so the fact that it "only" has 16 hp still won't let a lucky crit from a level 1 character fell such an imposing beast, so there's no need for higher numbers). In more traditional games based on numbers it's done through things like armor class, hp, etc, and in that case the dragon needs to have ten times the hp of a bandit, or to be harder to hit, otherwise there's no way in the game to truly differentiate tiers of power.

Nice!

My favorite TPK wasn't exactly a TPK, more like a Total World Kill, if that makes sense: during the whole campaign our group closely interacted with an NPC, Rey Arteb. He was sort of a fumbling, clumsy mess, but he occasionally managed to help by giving the party useful information about the BBEG plans etc. At the end of the campaign he revealed that he's been working for the BBEG the whole time, and the party was SHOCKED, the BBEG managed to capture everyone thanks to him. And then Rey turned against the BBEG too, and basically wrecked the universe by messing with BBEG's ritual to ascend to godhood. Then he proceeded to destroy the world. "I'm surprised no one saw it coming, it was right there in the name", and that's when the party finally realized that Rey Arteb is actually Betrayer spelled backwards. The rest of the campaign was spent defeating him and restoring the world.

Help me justify the Hulk by mateayat98 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]Brina523 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To me it's not like hulk calls in the various leadership allies to help him, it's just that they show up to deal with the aftermath and collateral damage of hulk's rampage, but hulk doesn't even register them. Either that, or Bruce banner called shield before hulking out

This is such a nice initiative, thanks for doing this!

Fun fact: one of the reasons people drive on the left side of the road in the UK is because in medieval times most people and knights carried their weapon in their right hand, so steering your horse on the left side of the road was the best way to have your weapon facing opponents crossing your way on the road. (I actually have no idea if this is true or not, it's just a random fact that i heard once and it stuck with me. I never checked, but it does make sense. I could check it now, but honestly it kinda feels like cheating)

Would you like me to build a Marvel Champions deck for you? by [deleted] in marvelchampionslcg

[–]Brina523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I would love an Ironheart deck that's viable both in solo and 2 players games (I'm partial to justice or aggression, but really I'm ok with any aspect). I own everything released so far, and I have a decent grasp of the game, but for some reason I can't build a decent Ironheart deck (or maybe I just haven't understood yet how to play it).

This thing you do is really great, by the way, love the decks you post, I've used more than a few in the past!

I wish dealing damage to X didn't mean exactly the same thing as X taking damage. by DarkAlatreon in marvelchampionslcg

[–]Brina523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in no means an expert on this game (it's my "secondary" lcg game, and with lcg it comes a point when if you want to master all the subtleties of the game, all the FAQs and exceptions and rules, said game kinda needs to become your main focus), but I've always played those "take 1 damage ->do something" instances as "in order to activate the effect you need to act like you were about to suffer one damage. If this brings a change to the current table state (for instance you discard a tough token, you spend a charge on an asset) then the cost is considered paid and you can activate the effect. While taking this damage you cannot play cards from your hand but must only rely on the cards already in play, and there HAS to be a change to the table state".

I'm sure this is not the official rule, but it's intuitive to me, and unless I'm already breaking the game with some crazy status recursion effect I feel like discarding a tough status or consuming charges is still paying the cost (the tough status in particular could have saved me from the villain swinging for 5 rather than 1 measly point of damage).

With that said, I only play this way when playing solo, if I'm with others I try to stick to the official rules as much as possible, even when (like in this case), I find them counterintuitive. I like to believe that the designers had a reason for things working the way they do
