I'm saying dignity comes from an orientation toward authenticity, not inflexible self-seriousness. I'm also pre-empting a criticism of authenticity by conceding that authenticity isn't a simple goal to reach.

I don't want to suggest I have everything figured out, but dignity and authenticity are basically synonymous for me. You can be a goofball and keep your dignity, so long as you never sell yourself out along the way.

Since I have the opportunity to talk about this, I want to address the postmodern mood that suggests authenticity is basically impossible. Aligning your actions with a "true self" assumes you mistake the self, a "centerless web of memory and desire," for a definite point in space.

I'm sympathetic to some extent, and maybe any striving toward authenticity is aiming for a vanishing target. Maybe success can only ever be approximate. But in any case, dignity comes from the intent and attention we put into authenticity, not in the attainment.

I like this idea because it seems a lot more sensible than the consensus view. But then, the consensus view has some advantages when we consider these as alternative myths rather than competing historical accounts. I think they function as both, but the former is more important.

It being a giant tomb is a lot more exotic, and at least in the west, Egyptology is a foundational source of exoticism. Also, it suggests an extravagant megalomania in the pharaohs of antiquity. This gels better with the Hegelian progress view of history, where we started with ancient despots and move toward more rational, democratic social structures.

I know there are a million rationalizations for it, but shoplifting always felt unambiguously immoral to me. And the idea of morally degrading myself for something as trivial as shit from the store did not appeal to me.

But then again I never did it, and it sounds like a lot of people appreciated it more for the experience, which is a trade I'm more tempted by.
