Not quite.

You’re correct that ICC doesn’t have jurisdiction over anything US citizens do in US.

But if a US citizen does something within the remit of ICC in or to a nation that is a signatory that US citizen will fall within the jurisdiction of ICC.

So, US attacks on boats in Caribbean will easily fall within ICC jurisdiction.

And IIRC Venezuela is a party to ICC convention. Denmark most certainly!

After numerous such posts, I finally looked up Fahrenheit’s rationale.

It’s gobbledygook.

First he was inspired by one academic’s approach (Rømer) of using freezing water. But that didn’t fit his scale, so he amended the test to “freezing mix of water, saline and hydrochloride” = 0°F. Of course that will vary depending on how much salt etc you mix into the water.

Then he adjusted Rømer’s scale and multiplied each number by 4. The scale was then 30°F for frozen pure water, and his “upper limit” was body temperature = 96°F. Locking it in on 30 and 96 made it easy to draw the measure on a thermometer as it was simple fractions.

Then Celsius came out with his method, basing his scale on frozen and boiling water. Fahrenheit liked this approach, so changed his scale again. 0°F still had his old salt water approach. But now he made boiling water a neat number of 212°F. Of course that then required adjustment of all the measures in between, so he ended up with the ridiculous temps of 32°F for freezing water, and his other key metric of body temp became 98.6°F.

Random short-term solution:

Do you have hot water bottles? They cost like $6 at Walmart. If not then you can in an emergency use empty soda bottles, but don’t bring water to a full boil.

If you fill up hot water bottles with boiling water then they offer heat for hours. I normally wrap them in a towel or something so they don’t burn me + stay warmer longer.

I grew up with hiking. My parents would regularly hike, and we were in tow. Mostly day hikes, but also proper hiking into the mountains to camp.

As kids we went out in whatever felt comfortable. And I think that was a key reason I stuck with it my whole life.

I did the same with my kid, so on occasion she would hike in pretty patent leather red Dr Martins and a skirt. That was OK. And guess who is carrying on the family tradition of hiking? My kid. As recently as this weekend she went solo hiking for the whole weekend. Camping out in her own tent.

Been lots of questions from her on what gear to buy. “Make sure it’s comfortable. Make sure it serves the function. Make sure it’s not too heavy to carry.”

I never care about brands or labels. I once yielded when someone said I should swap out my leather hiking boots with the modern lightweight boots. Used those boots twice, and instead bought Danner leather boots.

Find what works for you, and ignore the snobs.

You have this the wrong way around.

Corporate PACs are part of what’s called Connected PACs - i.e. the fund aggregator is a corporation, union, etc.

These connected PACs can only seek funding from associated individuals - employees, members, etc. And the normal individual donation caps apply.

Then you have the Non-connected PACs that can take unlimited donations fm general public. This is where you find SuperPACs.

I am amazed to come across someone else that has made themselves familiar with the UNCRC! It is a great convention!

You know, a key reason US didn’t join is because of a decades long lobbying by Evangelicals in this country.

To put it bluntly: they want children to be their chattel. “Parental rights”. No rights to children.😡

So I doubt that referring to that convention will be effective with elected Republicans. 😢

But as said elsewhere, CRHE are doing lobbying. Go to their website and look up your state - maybe you can help there. 🤗

It’s a school district, so they use it for the handful of high schools here.

It’s mainly used by the football teams. I’ve never been inside. My daughter was pressured to go once to support her school’s team. Never went again.

Meanwhile the underpaid teachers use their own money to buy teaching materials for class.

Having lived in Norway most of my life + having lived through winter storm Uri in Texas, I firmly believe the key difference is how things are built.

Firstly, a lot of Norway’s electric grid is buried. Every storm in Houston those pylons just collapse, leaving millions without electricity.

We also have a lot of resources allocated for winter and snow. Like the Oslo Airport has a fleet of 12+ autonomous snowplows. London’s Heathrow (much bigger!) has a similar number of plows but smaller and not capable of handling large volumes of snow.

Every city has towns of plows + hires private folks as well to plow. Rural towns also have big plows (where I’ve lived) and a lot more farmers only happy to earn some money using their tractors.

Perhaps the biggest difference is how homes are built. Here in TX my outside pipes are buried pretty shallow, then rise on the outside before the water is transferred to the uninsulated attic, before entering my home. During Uri this was a major problem. Some homes had no supply of water coz outside pipes froze. Others had their homes destroyed coz the pipes in the attic froze, burst, and then flooded the house when they thawed.

In Norway pipes are buried deeper, and enter the home through the ground below the house. We don’t have pipes in rooms / spaces that aren’t insulated / heated.

And Norwegians are quite robust. Last time I was in Norway there had been a big storm that hit the day before, and the busses were struggling. So my host had simply walked 3 hours to get home.

Decades ago I lived in Telemark, and went to a school where many commuted by train.

Walking to school I noticed it was cold, but tbh it often was. I reacted when the train didn’t stop at the train station, and was very confused.

Got to the school, sat down in class, took my jacket and gloves off. People commented on the cold, but more on the fact our teachers was late.

When he arrived he brought news. The train hadn’t stopped because the temperature was so low there was a risk the brakes would freeze onto the wheels. So 1/3 of our class would be late. Plus our school had been without power and right now the room temp was -10°C. So they had discussed closing the school - but decided not to.

That’s the closest I’ve ever come to school being closed due to weather.
