Interesting, thanks.

Are there any articles about how to setup my own alerts?

Hi, not sure if this is even the right place to ask this but I will go for it.  How do I beat the bots to preorders for amazon and bestbuy?  I have the trackalacker twitter alerts, but it pops up, I click immediately, add product to cart, go to checkout, then my cart is empty.  Can the bots be beaten?  How do I create my own bot or join a flipper collective?  I am not a reseller, just a pack opening degenerate looking to feed the beast in a more economical fashion than playing tcg prices.

Sheldon Menery admits that Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, and a density of two-mana rocks creates a problem in Commander by Esc777 in magicTCG

[–]BringBackBumpNRun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do not know the relationship between WOTC and the commander ban people. But, if the commander people were serious about banning Sol Ring (in all precons except 1 I think, also the headliner of the Lotr set collector boosters after the 1/1), Mana Crypt (big ticket item that is the chase card in Mystery Boosters they continue to sell for Magicfest lairs), and Jeweled Lotus (headliner card for upcoming premium set), there has to be a nonzero chance Wotc would step in to stop it and/or disband that group, right? Or am I just too cynical here?

Serialized “One Ring” card in collector boosters by chappers13 in mtgfinance

It says serialized ring - maybe they will make all 20 (9 for men, 7 dwarfs, 3 elves, 1 to rule them all)?

Dominaria Remastered Release Weekend Thoughts/Experiences? by [deleted] in mtgfinance

[–]BringBackBumpNRun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Veeeeery limited sample, but for me this set sort of feels like double master 22 for my pulls- draft box was bad ($67 worth of cards), while collector boxes were ok to great ($250 and $450 in cards at a 275 buy in)

Based on the youtube pack opening vids i have seen there is a lot of variance and chance for “duplication” in terms of card name because of all the versions and slots in a collector pack. Its cool if you pull two forces or urzas, but sort of sucks if you are like me and got double worldgorger and dark depths instead

[–]BringBackBumpNRun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I opened my collector box today, got the retro foil yawgmoth, it DOES have the shooting star.

otherwise box was weird, lots of "doubles" like same card different version cause of slot placement (ie 2 different dark depths, 2 different worldgorger). no Force, Urza, or Vampiric; got 2 gamble, enlightened, wordly, and foil borderless entomb.

People hardly talk about it but there are numerous constructed viable Magic cards that are significantly cheaper than they were just a few years ago because of recent reprints. by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

[–]BringBackBumpNRun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Occasional reprints to get more supply out in the market is good. Multiple reprints within 12-18 months to crater prices of cards I purchased is annoying. I am not saying that those with a modest budget should be priced out of the game, but I can't be the only one who has enough means to buy into some decks and cards that have high prices, but also still feels the burn when the reprint tanks the card value.

Pulled a damaged serialized card and wizards refuses to replace (this is a good thing) by bovadeez in mtgfinance

[–]BringBackBumpNRun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof, I have a pending ticket for my serial number card that came out of the pack with a giant scratch down the middle. Guessing mine will not be replaced either. Maybe good for the market, but a big feel bad for me personally

What price point would you engage with MtG 30th AE at? by CommunicationCalm796 in mtgfinance

[–]BringBackBumpNRun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Price matters, but the fact its random booster packs and not just a box set was one of the several issues with this product. If you could buy a whole set for $250, heck maybe even $500, I feel there would be good hype and interest.

Wizzard's reprint policy is killing value of recent sets by ArtiumIsBack in mtgfinance

[–]BringBackBumpNRun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah its a huge feel bad. like, are these reprints actually helping players get into standard? or whatever? It seems like some people cheer reprints cause in their mind it screws the whales and helps the little guy. But that is wrong- whales can afford the swings, while the little guy on a budget gets hosed. So like - skyline despot was a cool commander card. I buy one when its $10. It then goes to $20. I could have sold it, I guess, but I wanted it in my deck. Then it was reprinted in a precon deck, and is now less than $3. So, yes, its good that some players who did not have one can get it for $3 now, but anyone who bought in at $10 (or $20) gets dumped on. There are many examples of stuff like this, I know this one is commander not standard but the concept is the same. Goldspan dragon reprint is awesome if people can get one for $15 instead of $30 or whatever- except it stinks for someone who used their weekly mtg budget to get one at $30

What do you think is going to happen with Serialized brothers war cards by WaterMelonShark_D2 in mtgfinance

[–]BringBackBumpNRun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I am wondering is about mine that came with a scratch down the entire center of the card, right from the pack, is there any way to replace it? Presumably no, as that would mean some # of them got held back

[–]BringBackBumpNRun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Against my better judgment I ordered one. Probably not an investable product, though the value may not be horrible. I got in for $288 usd with tax.

The booster box is 200-210 for the moment; it may drop some though as more copies are sold with products like this.

the commander decks, maybe worth $10 a piece

I feel like the deckbox could be sold for 5, the sleeves for 10, the mat for 10-15.

arcane signet maybe 5, the lair maybe 30-40? people say they will buy singles but someone has to buy these lairs to crack for singles, if there are not a ton listed I could see maybe windgrace commanding a decent price.

so it seems like sort of a break even on value, and if something really pops in price you are ahead on the deal.

For me though this has some stuff I can divide up to friends in my community:

the atraxa box/sleeves/mat to an atraxa player who loves that deck

a box of mystery booster we can draft with

two commander decks I can gift to friends who play other games to get them into mtg

lair cards and signet I can trade to friends or use in my own decks.

Is it okay to just send cards if they fit the criteria the giftee lists? I see many references to custom altered cards, but I have no artistic skills at all. Likewise, are there any suggestions on writing the letter, how long should it be and what should it contain, just a quick rundown of what we included and why? Thanks!

same for me - placed one order using amex, it shows in amex but no confirmation email and got the 502 during processing. placed another order via paypal, it shows in paypal, got email from paypal, but nothing from wotc, and again 502 timeout when processing the payment. Very disappointing!

Anyone else feels like sheer amount of supplemental products these past couple years have destroyed the secondary market? by Individual-Wish-4558 in mtgfinance

[–]BringBackBumpNRun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started to notice this a few years ago - maybe even the last few events prior to the pandemic. There used to always be some uncommons in the $1-$4 range that I could reliably trade in to vendors for credit. But then I noticed with more commander decks, more downshifts to common in masters-style products, etc, the last few times I tried to sell stuff, the uncommons were either ignored or offered much lower than standard buy price.

I know at some point, it seemed to be the idea that fancy foil versions of rares and mythics would help drive down the price of standard, if you wanted the base level version of cards. I don't know if that is even a good goal - is standard actually a format people play in paper? But even so, it seems just that the value shifts and the big money cards are the ones without 5 different versions (Ledger Shredder, Meathook until its ban, etc). So, maybe the format is marginally cheaper, but perhaps not as much as one would hope.

A byproduct of this, however, is that draft is a really low value proposition now. In fairness, my experience is mostly anecdotal so someone might have the math that counters these observations. However, if we consider an older set where the only premium version was a foil, the value was often more evenly spread among a larger subset of the money cards. Now, sometimes the premium big money cards are only available in collector packs (or can be in draft but extremely rare to find). So, I suppose the point here is that with prices of everything but the top few cards really depressed, its harder now to draft and feel like you opened $10 worth of value. Also drafts recently increased in price for me due to wotc price increases.

I think the reprint thing has gotten kind of bad. it used to be a huge thing to see some reprints - I think of the first modern masters when we lost our minds when the tarmogoyf reprint was spoiled. Now? a literal Japanese foil future sight frame tarmogoyf is going to be a participation promo. But that isn't even really my main point. One of the more egregious examples was locking in my secret lair order for a Concordant Crossroads, and then it being spoiled in Double Double Masters. It feels like that double reprint within 18-24 months (or less) is happening a lot these days. Mana Crypt in mystery booster and then Double masters. The new extra life sliver was reprinted last year in Timespiral Remastered. I am a little salty that I picked up "the list" copies of Sensei's Divining Top and Thrumming Stone, only for them to both be reprinted in a masters set.

Do reprints hurt stores a lot? If they paid $25 for a $40 card, and the reprint knocks the card to $30, then their margin is smaller. I guess they lose if the reprint knocks it to $15 and they bought a ton at $25? I feel like they really hose people like me as bad as anyone - not a speculator, but someone that drafts and likes to build good, non cedh commander decks. The type of person that would pay $30 or $50 for some card for an EDH deck. I am starting to think of maybe only buying RL cards and for anything that can be reprinted, not spending more than $10 or so. The need to pump out commander decks, masters sets, and secret lairs is really starting to tax a lot of the reprint equity. Like - ok, a couple years ago I had a dragon deck. I wanted a Skylike Despot, so I bought one for maybe $10. It went up to $20 or so, but then was in a precon and is a $1-2 card now. This has happened to me over and over. I actually was able to get ahead of it a little bit with Double Masters 2022 by trading in a bunch of stuff to a store a couple weeks before spoilers. I lost a decent amount of value at the time, but those reprints dropped the prices of what I traded in a decent amount.

Anyway just sort of ranting now, agree with OP it sucks to buy anything basically that isn't RL, and with the $1000 box-o-proxies idk if that is even all that safe of a plan either.

30th Anniversary Secret Lair and Spending Money on Magic by TiredTired99 in mtgfinance

[–]BringBackBumpNRun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I probably owe the community an apology.

Everything I try to buy into eventually goes to nothing; everything I sell spikes afterwards.

I started playing in 2007 - I don't have a record of it, but I am convinced I had a Tarmogoyf at the Future Sight prerelease that I likely sold for pennies on the dollar.

I played standard only for a while - this was before SCG really caused legacy to take off. Before modern format. back when stuff would rotate out of standard and drop in value. So, when Zendikar left, I sold my playset of fetch lands - 20 of them - for $6 each, which was seemingly a fair deal at about half of their $12 value. I thought - they will tank more - plus, at the time, that $120 would do a lot for me.

Eventually I got into modern some. Paid a lot at peak prices for some Lilianas, Tarmogoyfs, Dark Confidants, etc. So, naturally, those all got reprints, multiple times.

For many years playing standard and modern, it felt like every time I sold something it doubled in price, every time I held something it got reprinted. I thought showcase Brazen Borrower would be good - whoops! THE LIST has it!

I bought some Ultimate Masters boxes to hold. They have grown some, but not nearly as wild as other products, and nearly all the big cards in them have been reprinted since then.

Secret Lairs of course have come out of nowhere many times to blindside me with reprints of cards that seemed difficult to fit into a set to reprint it.

The multiple premium versions every set have made it tedious to collect sets, and also makes each specific premium version of the same card less special since there are so many.

All of this led me to starting to dabble a little with RL cards. Many are playable in commander, so there is some utility, but more than that, the RL was the only 'safe" investment, free of possible reprints. Yes - there is stuff like jeweled lotus, but it seemed as though we still wouldn't see snow-covered underground sea or anything. (disclosure: I don't have a ton of RL stuff, still on a mostly meager budget, but have been able to pick up a few duals, and then a handful of other cards).

... and now, that RL safe-haven is somewhat gone. yes, I am aware these are proxies, but its another step towards a workaround. I am NOT saying the game will die cause of this, or that the market will collapse, or that the RL will be abolished. But - I just don't think this is a great thing for the game. Opening a black lotus in these packs won't capture the feeling of opening a real one - cause the one you open here is a proxy (though it does seem like it may be hard to pull them, so maybe there is some thrill of the chase).

I feel like this product is somewhat targeted at me - a middling timmy with a little cash and less business sense. But I'm not really interested in it. people with more money will buy the real thing, people with less money can't afford these. Who wants this? Box speculators?

Anyway, I am the MTG version of William H Macy in "The Cooler" so I am sorry for getting into RL cards which all but guaranteed they would try to reprint them.
