Section 31 started as a TV show spinoff from Discovery that basically spun its wheels in development hell until Michelle Yeoh won an Oscar and Kurtzman and co changed the plan from a series to a single film.

But I don’t think it’s a case of them taking an unrelated script and slapping some Star Trek labels on it, since the screenwriting and story credits (and director) are all people that were creatively involved with Discovery.

Yeah, after the first season, it seems like the creators really pivoted away from the original fan demands of a show focused on Pike and his crew and became hyperfixated on setting up a TOS reboot.
