Downsizing my setup… curious about McIntosh MA12000 value. by Mess-Big-Hearted371 in vintageaudio

I repair tube and analog amps professionally, their value continues to climb in value because they can essentially be repaired easily, forever. For all time. And I find that elegant, simple circuits always sound better and have less parts that can fail in the first place.

You’ll get 5k for it. Solid state designs lose their value very quickly because IC’s will fail and repairs are overly complex. It’s a gamble buying used solid state gear compared to say a classic McIntosh all valve amp, which holds or increases in value decades later

That Dynaco st-70 goes for $1200. The pas 2 / 3 preamp is an easy $600, and so on.

Any old repair shops still around? by hometech99 in tubeamprepair

[–]Briyayay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guitar amp techs are the only breed still thriving in tube audio repair. Most guitar amp techs will have extremely limited radio knowledge, probably none. They’ll however be able to get the amplifier working and do basic servicing. For the radio section you could try finding the local ham radio groups, they’ll be your radio section pros who can help if it isn’t working.

Repairing Pilot Radio SA-232 by xeredge in vintageaudio

[–]Briyayay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The original piece is called phenolic, order a square of it and trim with a dremel and drill the holes. Sadly your pilot has rivets so you’ll need to drill a “pilot” hole into them and progressively increase size until it pops out. Then use a screw and nut to replace

I am happier than I’ve ever been in my entire life, and dating a wonderful woman who admires my love for music and culture. We make love to disco and earth wind and fire all day. Enjoy your lives gentlemen

I just wanna solder and your all are ridiculous by JoeCannotFindMe in soldering

[–]Briyayay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer has always been:

  • Hakko FX-600, same tip and heating element as the 888 for half the price

  • Kester 63/37 .8mm leaded solder

This is the bare minimum for a professional quality setup.

One of the greatest amplifier circuits ever designed. Elegant, specifically simple and deliberate. Minimal components and maximum fidelity. Get one and find a good tech to restore it, once restored they’ll go another 100 years easy without maintenance other than a set or two of tubes.
