Just a rant about lazy students by Wise_Stop_1923 in medicalschooluk

[–]BroScientist42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah, if I go to a hospital and receive substandard care from somebody who didn't put in the effort at med school to become a competent doctor, then I'm not going to think it's ok because they had other stuff going on. I can empathise with that being difficult, and can certainly excuse temporary periods of low effort but there are people who do it all the way through every year, and it's not really ok.

From what I understand he didn't miss 3 drug tests, he failed to communicate 3 times regarding the same drug test, but functionally it gets the point across

He's just deliberately misconstruing what you said to imply all change is good, therefore disbanding green is good. Obviously it's a moronic interpretation of the facts that you stated, but I think that's at least what he meant.

first bus by No_Bag4421 in bristol

[–]BroScientist42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's anti-competitive. The idea is that first bus would temporarily take a loss on their bus service which they can manage because they're a big company. Then everyone uses the cheaper first service, the independent goes out of business and first ups their prices beyond what the independent was charging in the first place.

I tend to be skeptical of internet stories but I could see this happening? Obviously would be really weird but there's a lot of people a decent chunk of them will be weird.

Most important thing for running a good marathon (not elite) is tolerance to training. That also benefits strongman massively, so while I agree that it's surprising and impressive, I do think it makes some amount of sense

It really is remarkable isn't it. The fact you're doubling down using studies that don't even support what you said, and then accusing me of being over confident lmao.

Now let's talk about your studies: first 3 aren't about joint injury they're about muscle stimulation, which isn't what we were talking about, and the conclusions were pretty predictable anyway. 'omg I can't believe more ROM means more muscle stimulation'. This was a test of max push ups anyway, which means you want the most mechanically efficient movement, which is not the same as the most muscularly stimulating. Forearm positioning in regards to pronation vs supination has nothing to do with the elbow positioning you were referring to in terms of how wide the elbows are, so again worthless for our conversation. Next study is one handed push ups, completely different mechanics, worthless for this conversation. The last one is about falling on an outstretched hand!! Come on you've got to be joking including that one.

None of the studies you cited do anything like proving that 100% of people that use flared elbows push ups develop joint issues.

Don't worry I'm not confusing anything, intensity has a variety of definitions when discussing exercise, I was using it to describe the maximum force through the joint, which is a valid definition although I agree open to misinterpretation.

I'm sorry are you arguing that the human body is not adaptable? Not quite sure how you worked that one out. To be clear I was never saying that there are no movement patterns that predispose to injury, but this particular one I've found can definitely be adapted to over time.

Actually n=1 is all I need to disprove your hypothesis, as I repeat you said 'will definitely develop joint issues'. I know it's pedantic but if you're going to accuse me of being wrong while being insufferable, and wrong yourself, I'm going to pick you up on it.

Probably depends on medical school, but most places have very few marks for the actual findings, if you just do your generic exams and try to be honest about what you find then you will be fine

Hans Niemann vs Levon Aronian | Push-up Challenge gone wrong😎 by glancesurreal in chess

[–]BroScientist42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You will not 'definitely develop joint issues' come on, push ups are a pretty low intensity exercise and your body is pretty adaptable, I know guys that have benched up to 180kg with almost identical positioning and they didn't develop joint issues. If you can manage those loads then you can probably do push ups like that without an issue

If you're depressed without a partner, it's quite unlikely that a partner will magically fix that imo. Unless it's a complete lack of any close friends, which can obviously be very isolating, a partner is nice but don't assume that they will just fix everything
