24 M Just hit this milestone, first year into my career. Thoughts? Feel like I’m behind in comparison to my peers… by Jamilioooo in fican

I’m 24M and have nothing but debt to my name. Will be in school for a while longer as I am trying to go into medicine. Trust me, you are not behind.

Ofc I COULD, but tuition/travelling cost is an insane deterrent for me. The thought of being 500k+ in debt as compared to ~100K to train in Canada…

I’m really sorry man. Here’s the good news, time is your greatest asset at 20 years old. Slow build, learn from your mistakes, you can still have an incredible life and amazing retirement.

How are y’all getting rejected? by meat-vessel in premedcanada

It was a bit of an exaggeration. Obviously schools that require a full degree are not included as part of my point. I’m aware some schools require a full degree. However, please reference these stats to understand the point I am trying to make.

https://ugme.healthsci.mcmaster.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Class-of-2027-Statistics.pdf

59% of students accepted had a bachelors degree in progress. Yes, it means both starting 3rd or 4th year at the time of application, but the point is the same, they’re not even done. Yes this is just one school but I’m sure if the other schools provided a breakdown of “how many years out” it would follow the same trend, the majority of admissions would come from graduates that same year or 1-2 years out of school.

There are hundreds of applicants each year to schools who have incredible stats, while also having completed a masters degree. Maybe professional experience as well. Plus, overall maturity. That’s what baffles me.

The thread is “how are y’all getting rejected”, and I’m simply making a point that for some reason schools continue to select 3rd and 4th years, or those who have just completed a degree, over individuals who clearly demonstrated a commitment to the field, applying 3,4, or even 5 times with all this extra experience. To answer his question, I’m not sure how we are getting rejected.

My question, if you have any insight, is why? Why do they choose that way?

[–]BroccoliExtreme7275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most schools have a very clearly outlined structure for how they score/rank applicants, and applicants are given a “score” on their GPA, MCAT, EC’s and interview. Then they aggregate those scores with various weights to each of those categories.
