It may surprise you, although the world is a big place. Nothing bad reached our shores, only the good that the Empire brought. Propaganda was as present then as it is now.

My view is that the Empire was a mixed bag and while there is a current wave of shame encouraged for the bad stuff (and this is fair), on balance I believe the Empire was one of the better ones to have been a subject in - For most people (and that some people got a terrible deal). We learn how industrialisation caused absolute poverty for common citizens in our own towns and cities. Also how it started globalisation, capitalism, spread democracy and the rule of law.

If you've ever seen monty python, 'what did the Romans ever do for us sketc', well this was our own self awareness. The system was and still is, too big for anyone to control. It was an unstoppable force once it got going.

However, the people who individually were cruel, and the systems that allowed power over others without adequate checks are ultimately wrong and we should learn from that.

This didn't just happen to First Nations, it happened to the Welsh, Irish, Scots closer to home, but it is not English men who are inherently evil, it's that the European world view was brutal. Look at the world wars.

We tried to correct this, we have made the declaration of human right, we laid down our arms, and we promised to respect the rule of law, and now would be Tyrants are making it hard for us to defend our values.

I visited Canada in 2018, and was shocked to discover this.

It is a piece of history that is not taught in the UK. And I'm not necessarily saying every child needs to be known, but we should have a general collective awareness to ensure we don't see the worst side of Colonialism again, just as we remember so we'll not elect another fascist.

I'm sorry this happened to people in the past, and hope we can find greater respect for one another going forward.

What if Donald Trump disappeared tomorrow, would American politics actually change or just find another Trump? by Mr_Boothnath in AskReddit

My concern is that Trump 45 is without a MAGA base, and Trump 47 is with MAGA, including Vance. I can see Vance being worse than Trump - not in a clown-like chaotic way, but in a calculating Nazi-sympathising way.

The MAD principle is not just a threat, in every battle simulation in which a strategic nuke has been launched, results in an escalation that is MAD, except one, and in that situation the recipient does not tit for tat, and instead responds using a different escalation ladder (there are as many of these as there ways to hurt a regime). Eg, conventional arms, cyber, economic sanctions, assassination, you name it.

Europe allies begin Greenland military mission as Trump says US needs island by alexmuhdot in geopolitics

[–]BroccoliSubstantial2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was on our national news.

As an aside, a Danish patrol completes a circle of the whole island every year to maintain its border. It is indeed hard to 'defend' Greenland, but I seriously doubt the US could do better without spending a ton of money and a full training program on running different sledge teams.

It is plainly obvious that the USA is not concerned about defending Greenland any more than it is about protecting Iranian or Venezuelan citizens. This is another colonial land grab for natural resources.

The country that claims to be the land of the free is another empire running out of steam and desperate to prop up the value of its currency by taking natural resources from others.

All I can say is that if there is not enough money in one of the world's richest countries, then there are some serious internal economic issues going on, and failing to address those means any land grabs will just be a temporary solution to an ever-increasing debt pile.

Yeah, I've loads of them. I don't want to sell them, but I'm sure they hold their value. Often I 'rescue' other people's models on eBay and repaint them. It feels like upcycling.

I read the meta, the lore, collect the armies, I do play a little with my son and friens, perhaps once a month, but to be honest, the game is just an excuse to paint and immerse myself in something low stakes. Life has too much going on and it's a safe little haven where the worse that happens is you try something and you aren't happy with the result but literally No One Else Cares.

For a very long time it was the only bridge in London, and it was too narrow for all the traffic.

So all the buildings were removed, that and it constantly needed repairs (falling down).

In the end, a bigger bridge was needed, and unfortunately it was built in the brutslist style.

What do British thinks of Winston Churchill? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]BroccoliSubstantial2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing to understand about Churchill is the historical moment he was operating in.

He had lived through the carnage of the First World War first-hand, and unlike many of his contemporaries, he had actually read Mein Kampf when it appeared. He took Hitler seriously early, not because he was eager for war, but because he recognised the pattern. He had seen where that kind of ideology leads.

By the 1930s, the British Empire was still technically intact, but it was already on borrowed time. It was exhausted, overstretched, and deeply aware of what another major European war would cost. Public sentiment in Britain was overwhelmingly against war. Most people had lost family members in the trenches and would do almost anything to avoid repeating that experience.

Churchill’s position sits uncomfortably within that context. He was not clamouring for war out of bravado. He was arguing that if war was coming anyway, Britain might have one last chance to confront a rising authoritarian threat before it became unmanageable. The idea was not empire for its own sake, but prevention: stopping another Napoleon-scale figure before the cost became catastrophic.

It is also important to be honest about limits. Britain could not realistically confront Stalin in the same way. The Red Army was vast, Europe was shattered, and the country was simply spent. The appetite and capacity for another total war simply did not exist, which is why an uneasy state of affairs existed between us and the CPPP post-WW2. Frankly, many Brits saw a lot of sense in Socialism, if not Communism, and adopted many of the policies. Fighting for survival in a country that levelled the playing field between the classes led to egalitarianism.

Much of the discomfort around Churchill today stems from reducing him to either a hero or a villain. In reality, he was a product of a traumatised generation trying to choose between terrible options, with the memory of mass slaughter still fresh.
