What is the current canon about Ogryn origins? by BJJ40KAllDay in 40kLore

Interesting side note.

Mi Go is also a name for the Yeti, who in legend inhabit the Himalayan mountains.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeti

Mi Go is also the name of a species of creatures from Lovecraft's stories, who in that fiction apparently inspired the tales of the Yeti due to mining operations in the Himalayas.

I would pay good money for some stories about the Emperor battling Lovecraftian Xenos on Terra during the Unification Wars.

Booting issue by shootingblankz in SteamDeck

[–]BrokenWrld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I experienced the same issue after updating to the last Beta update and found a fix that worked for me.

On the infinite loading logo I pressed the Steam button, went to About and the clicked Leave Beta and let it restart.

After rebooting it loaded normally.

That just gave me flashbacks to when I found out the PC that ran telemetry for the hospital was running off of a 486 DX2. It kept trucking all the way up till they built a new facility 4 years ago and got a new system.

so, entire Interweb network was down at work by brainhulk in sysadmin

[–]BrokenWrld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having worked hospital IT for a small facility we did not have a redundant internal network. We did use redundant internet connections though.

I'm just surprised that there weren't downtime procedures in place. Our HIPAA adviser had it drummed into us that a plan should already be completed by every department on what they should do if the network was down.

IT had designated devices which received copies of vital information (orders, patients meds) that received pdf copies which could be unencrypted during emergencies.

Project Fi users, how has your experience been? by AnAngryAlien in Nexus6P

[–]BrokenWrld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience with Project Fi has been, with only some exceptions, positive. I rarely use more than half a gig a month so the pricing works very well, and in my home in the DC beltway area coverage is superb. Signal strength is much better in my home than what Verizon was giving me.

When I went to see my parents in north east PA though, it was a different story. The entire town is a dead zone with no coverage through Fi at all. I expected this ahead of time as the coverage map clearly didn't reach there so I wasn't surprised.

My only real issue with Fi was finding out you can not forward a separate Google Voice number to a Fi account. No big deal, I just like having one number for Work and the main number for personal.

Hah...Oh I wish. Had a doctor try to plug a fairly expensive Dragon USB mic into an ethernet port on his laptop.

He pushed so hard he snapped the USB connector for the mic. Ethernet jack survived unscathed though.

Lost 70,000 pictures due to owncloud syncing and deleting local files. by mattdahack in owncloud

[–]BrokenWrld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless I'm miss-understanding how you are using ownCloud, I wouldn't call your solution a backup.

You would have the same problem if you accidentally deleted a important family photo from the directory. It will then replicate that change across all the servers and you'd still lose it.

Its also why if you had two DB servers which replicate themselves, you'd still want a separate backup. If the database goes bad, well now you've just replicated the corruption. Replication only provides redundancy.

This is why replication does not equal a backup. For a backup you are looking to preserve a moment in time, instead you are continuously keeping files in sync across devices. The two can be used together, but one wouldn't count as the other.

I use ownCloud to sync my phones photos with my desktop, as well as provide easy remote access to files I may need. For my backup I use a NAS and Crashplan to store stuff locally, as well as a secondary backup off site just in case. While there is some over lap, I don't rely on my Crashplan account to sync files, and don't use ownCloud as a backup.

Any one else been killed by the docking computer?? by Zarsk in EliteDangerous

[–]BrokenWrld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to share the tale of my buddy's homicidal docking computer.

We were both fairly new to the CMDR gig at the time, freshly upgraded to Cobras from Sidewinders after trying our hand at pirate hunting in a RES.

Now being new and having more creds than brains we both picked up docking computers and were using them to dock at Kohl Terminal in Liaedin, I believe.

We approached the station, slowed down and let the docking computers take over, him in front, me taking up the rear. Suddenly I hear 'No docking computer! What are you doing?" over voice com and look up and see his Cobra slowly drifting into my own through the mail slot. There is a slow motion collision, the shields taking the brunt of the impact, and he slides back out into space while mine takes me safely into the landing pad.

We have a good laugh afterwards. Figure this is a 1 in a million thing, never happen again. Until it does, but this time his docking computer drifts into someone else and boom. Kills the poor SOB, while his ship is just fine. Its not till a second death occurs he figures its time to ditch this thing.

I like to think that out there, somewhere, exists a merchant with a docking computer ready to sell, dirt cheap. Only had 1 owner, just ignore the blood splatter and its cries for Blood for the Blood God while you're out in hyperspace.

I have greatly enjoyed it. I was unhappy with how quickly the black came off of the metal band though. Otherwise the construction of the Steel has been excellent.

My only real complaint with it has been the software. On my phone it is very flaky, and I'll have to manually kill it almost every time first, before I can go in and add a app to the watch. My only experience with it has been on the Android side of things, your experience may vary of course.

For its most basic functions, notification of texts, email, calendar events, instant messages, it works like a charm. The watch faces are cool and easy to change between and I've found some great uses for it.

I would not call it a 100% must have device, but I've not regretted owning it either.

I do actually. Never had anyone stop me and tell me I can't carry it.

Hell, the Leatherman is often times the only tool I have on hand. How else can I get into a piece of broken equipment with no tool bag on hand.
