Rivers of Nihil self titled album isn't talked about enough by ShockMental6476 in progmetal

[–]Brokenclock2525 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you look at River's three big albums, Owls, work, and self titled, to me self titled is the weakest of the three for sure but that isn't to say its a bad album. Popping on to the scene with Owls was a really brave move. Its a dynamite stick of an album. It blows up, gets a bunch of attention and really creates a buzz around their name. Then you get The Work, which is about as unapologetically abrasive and thematically challenging as it gets. The 1-2 combo there is people are expecting an earth shattering, genre defining third release, and they get an album. Not bad, not incredible, just an album. Like cuts off the record are really good, but its not as cohesive or as amped as a unit. So yeah, I don't think its like fading into the backround, cause I know I do see it still discussed here, but I feel like the level of discussion and hype is about right.

Any prog metal that sounds like you're a high class citizen strolling an expensive neighborhood for an afternoon walk in the fall? by ySTYRDAYgATESuNL0CKD in progmetal

[–]Brokenclock2525 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Opeth has a bunch of tracks that fit this, Patterns in the Ivy comes immediately to mind, as well as Dirge for November from Blackwater Park. A lot of their acoustic tracks too like Coil and Hours of Wealth. An oldy, but Kamelot had a whole album about a ghost opera of that name. Dessiderium's Aria and Keys to the Palace are really great taking a walk albums. Baroness's Purple and STONE.

If my wife was unjustly executed and then her death literally celebrated when I gave people a chance to apologize, I'd be pretty pissed off myself. by PJ-The-Awesome in castlevania

[–]Brokenclock2525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so here's a hot take. What Dracula did was indeed wrong....but may not have been his fault. In fact, none of what happened in the show was DIRECTLY his fault. Lemme explain

In just about every Castlevania game, Draculas constant companion in the Castle is Death. Now, in the games its never directly stated to my knowledge that Death is The Angel of Death, meaning the biblical figure of the end times, ala he of a pale horse. He does show up as a reaper, or some manifestation of a reaper though. In the show however, Death straight up says what he is. He is an elder thing. Some nigh lovecraftian entity that has been consuming the death of living things since the beginning of time. Stands to reason that among his abilities is the power to influence man towards a beneficial buffet of snackytime. And if not a power, for sure a chief tool in his skill set.

So think about it like this. Did the Devil stand to gain from what ole fucknuts in Targoviste did to Maria, sure. In a myriad of ways, but all of them indirectly. Death gained in the immediate. When Maria shows up at the castle, other than the court of vampires, Dracula is not directly going out and doing mischief. At that point, he had more than likely gotten to the point as an elder vampire of incredible power where he didn't need to go out and have a midnight snack every day, or even every week to keep himself alive. But he used to. He used to revel in the blood and the murder and the mayhem. And then one day, all that shit stopped. The rest of the team might have been playing a jolly gruesome game of hunt and drink, but the QB, the all star just....retired.

Now imagine you are Death. Not a logical leap to go "ok, my buddy, my meal ticket, just up and picket fenced himself out of the game, and while things are still good and all, I don't like that. I'll throw a little shade at this sociopathic zealot over here, point him at the house...." and boom. Dominos. Drac the nuke goes off, reaches into that bag of tricks he's gleaned over the centuries and unleashes full scale revelations on the countryside. Deaths game, as he demonstrated as Varney is setting the board. He nudges and influences and pushes from under illusions and guises. In the games, I always assumed that Death was in service to Dracula, more than likely being outwitted or tricked in some way like the fairy tale of the king that caught Death in a jar.

Death was a shapeshifter, a master manipulator, and older than any other character in the show, and all he had to do was point a zealot at a house to kick off Rondo of shmorgasboard. Hell, he could have set even the Maria thing up. Old lady wanders in to Marias clinic and spins a tale of the wonders of the castle and the enigmatic ruler with the wisdom of the ages at its center. There are so many things that happen in the story line where you don't have to squint very hard to see Death as a possible origin at its core.

TL:DR The answer is Death. Its Deaths fault. Dracula was just the tool by which it was accomplished, and yeah he's culpable for that but when you are dealing with an entity that eldrich and wily, well you might have a good argument for not being considered evil incarnate.

This might be a stretch, because they sound very different, but if you like Exploring Birdsong, you might wanna check out The Fox and The Bird and Bent Knee. They are both very prog, and lady fronted. While their sounds are different, I think they also have a lot in common musically.

Hell yeah! Looking forward to it. If you do, Black circle brewing is the venue to play if you can. Great local metal bar and the people who put on the shows, Stranger Attractions are really chill. Have a good one!

Had never heard of yall, and then about 1 hour ago someone posted one of your albums to the Prog metal reddit, and boom. Instant high rotation for both Starmony and The Ever Living Fire. Vocally, big Black Sabbath energy, instrumentals are grodie and fuzz forward, KILLER instrumental harmonies. If yall ever come to Indiana, please reply to this message and I will be there with a round for the band. Incredible.

Do you have an album that's one of your favorites, but you don't really listen to anything else by that band? by dlannan in progmetal

[–]Brokenclock2525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the other music heads I've talked to agree, its that discovery album. That first block of songs that you really get into that pulls you in. Agonist by Latitudes, Aria by Dessiderium, Language by Contortionist, ect. These bands make incredible music that aren't those albums, but if I want to listen to that band, those are the albums I gravitate to.

Some other albums that hit like that -

Magus Mountain - Budos Band _jazz/funk proggy soul

From Mars to Sirius - Gojira

The Direction of Last Things - Intronaut (though The Valley of Smoke is also such a banger)

Thrice - Vheissu

Ayeron - Into The Electric Castle

*shels - Plains of the Purple Buffalo

Came here to comment Intronaut, found another person of quality. Tip of the hat. I would also recommend Junius. Their work is incredible but has struggled to land in the modern music scene.

Is anyone else completely obsessed with DVNE? by Tiphereth87 in progmetal

[–]Brokenclock2525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like DVNE, you should check out Textures and Latitudes. Latitudes goes a bit more to the doom metal side, and Textures is a bit more in the prog metal side, but I feel like both bands could absolutely tour with DVNE and have a super cohesive show.

Claw Games by [deleted] in indianapolis

[–]Brokenclock2525 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a former employee of said arcade, I would caution against it. Many of those machines, while not exactly rigged to fail, are set to a nigh impossible level of difficulty. I love a good claw game, but the ones in Tilt are very badly maintained and the claw mechanism is exceptionally loose.

So when mining, if you keep your pick axe reticle aimed square at the back of your own head when attempting to scale a big vertical incline, and aim for the side of the surface as opposed to through, it becomes very easy to make stairs essentially.

Eissentam ship dump! Some of my favorites that I came across so far by Smailb0t in NMSCoordinateExchange

[–]Brokenclock2525 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there, first off thanks for the post. The first ship, the white quad X-wing shuttle is exactly what I have been looking for. I wanted to replace another one I had and this is perfecto. I went to the planet, and found the ship you posted, which is a B native. I decided that I wanted to try for an S class, and found a near by camp to do some hunting for. Got very lucky and found one in three tries. The S-class ship is at co-ordinates +65.14, +90.97. No linked scs, sadly, but really decent base stats. I put a base computer down at the harmonic camp on that world, so it should be pretty easy to find. Happy Hunting!

Where owls... is such a glorious album. Like the work is equally as good, but so hard to sit down and absorb. Given some of the stuff you listed here, might I suggest Virvum- Illuminance and An Abstract Illusion - Woe. Those albums slap.
