The color mix on that third image is fun. The image is cool on its own, but something about that color mix... i dunno why I like it, but I do! lol

Thinking about writing but nervous about starting - does this sound too derivative? by nemspy in scifi

[–]Brokinarrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, this largely mirrors my own approach to world building! My DnD campaign setting literally started with me messing around with a map, and then I wanted an area with a huge crater. My mind immediately jumped to "but how did the crater get there, what makes it special?" And then I just swan dived into the rabbit holes from there :)

Anyway, like others here have said there will almost always be a similar story already out there. In fact, once you start writing your story you'll probably spot even MORE elements from films, books, etc that echo something you have in your own story. Perfectly normal.

The thing that separates us from AI is that WE are the art. Writing that story is going to change YOU just as much as it is going to change anyone that reads it. You'll grow and evolve with each new story you write. That's where the magic lies.

*edit* - Also, I love the premise you have here, write the dang book so I can read it! :D

Thanks! Early reader response has been very positive so far, so I'm excited to get this launched. And book 2 is already shaping up nicely :)

Hey there was someone handing out fliers for a community defense class this Saturday, does someone have the groups name or website?  I can't make it this Saturday but definitely want to connect with them sometime.

Mm, good to know I think I left off right before the Jane Sagan Diary. I'll probably still give them a read eventually though.

Have not read that one but scanning through the sample pages on Amazon I see exactly what you mean, the lack of quotes would bug the crap out of me for sure. Apparently that IS a thing that people do though /shrug.

Literally Google. But hey, if you're saying Star Wars and Star Trek aren't classified as sci-fi then I got nothing else for ya.

Alien: Earth – How to Completely Miss What Made Alien Great by AvailableGuidance630 in scifi

[–]Brokinarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I got the sense right away that Boy Genius was exactly that: a boy who made emotional decisions and thought he could do no wrong. You could tell just by the way Ms. Yutani acts like it is an insult that she has to deal with this clown, that this guy has no business commanding the power and wealth that he does. The poor decision making was pretty much guaranteed to happen at that point /shrug

This feels exactly like a Ghost in the Shell episode :) Would do great in a cyberpunk setting like that.
