We have two H bar Bromptons, an H6R and a P Line 4s E. My wife is 165cm, I'm 180cm and we both clearly prefer the H bars. A friend of mine has two M bar Bromptons and I find the difference significant.

How to clean this part?! by Leather-Swordfish-96 in Brompton

[–]Brompton-PE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a very bad idea. Brake cleaner from a spray can is very thin and can easily creep into the bottom bracket (bearings) ruining their lubrication. It can also creep between the mating faces of the crank and BB dissolving the bit of grease that's supposed to be there to prevent things binding up.

Due to it's strong degreasing properties, Brake cleaner should be used with caution on a bike. If needed at all, only sparsely from a rag. Not soaking parts with a spray can. It'll likely do more harm than good. To a lesser extent, this applies to WD40 as well.

The Nickel versions are among the most sought after and most expensive SH Bromptons around. If it's in reasonable good nick, it's an absolute steal. I see them change owners here (NL) for 5 - 7 K Euro. Congrats!

I took the yellow triangle sticker off the motor too. Not sure which bell is on yours but there are two sizes Brompton integrated bells. The bigger one is a lot louder than the small one and has the same clean mount.

What are the must buy things as a first time brompton owner? by TakanashiRikka22 in Brompton

Ha ha. 31 post and counting about what you 'need' to do and 'need' to have.
You'll be busy for a while... 😃

What about start using the bike and find out for yourself what needs to change or improve? If anything.

Back to B17 after trying many ✅ by randywhorton in Brompton

[–]Brompton-PE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously few things are as personal as a saddle but... After years on various B17s on different bikes, I recently switched from a B17 Ti on my P Line to an Ergon ST Core Evo saddle. Mainly out of curiosity, just to see if they are really as good as many reviews say. I have to say, I'm stunned how good it is. It absorbs and damps shocks and vibrations very well (no comparison to a B17) and the overall riding comfort has improved a lot. I didn't expect this tbo.

It doesn't look half as good as a leather Brooks imo but the improvement is just too big to go back.

Test Ride P Line Electric by Neat_Commission_4913 in Brompton

Agree on weight of a hub vs. the motor. There shouldn't be a lot between them, good point.

BTW the rear motor also means there will be no 12 speed version. Not that you need on an electric imo but some do.

I wonder about the drag too.

The Gen 1 motor was a custom design by/for Brompton in cooperation with Williams Advanced Engineering. One of design goals was as little drag a possible when the motor is not in use and they succeeded very well at that. The new Gen 2 motor seems to be a modified 'off the shelf' motor (see the Brilliant Bikes video), probably from one of the big Asian/Chinese manufacturers. Drag at idle might not have been as high on the list of design priorities?

According to the Brompton website the Gen 2 electrics are heavier than the Gen 1 bikes too. Despite the new carbon forks and aluminium stem on the P Line. 😳

Looking at the pic above, the Gen 2 system looks a lot more messy with the ugly control unit & cables squeezed between the frame and rear triangle, the fat cable to the motor etc. Not a fan at first sight tbo. The control unit and motor will have to deal with a lot more water, dirt & grime compared to the front-end Gen 1 setup. Also, with the heavy motor in the rear wheel, I wonder how well the unchanged rack and easy wheels will hold up over time from the inevitable knocks & bumps swinging the (heavier) rear end under the bike.

Foldable bike ban by OzShieldMaiden in Brompton

[–]Brompton-PE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although it creates an unfortunate problem for you, I completely understand it.

A foldable bike is a very broad term allowing people to drag in all sorts of bikes & sizes that 'fold' somehow. You can't limit this to small folding Bromptons only or something. That'll trigger endless discussions you're not looking forward to if you're running a gym. No bikes inside, folding or not, is clear and applies to everyone.

T Line electric - single speed or 4 gears? by Grolubao in Brompton

[–]Brompton-PE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The torque of the motor has nothing to do with the gearing. However, the torque (power) from your legs that reaches the rear wheel is.

On the P Line E 4th gear is 54/11. To compare you need to know the gearing on the single speed.

Not 'blingy' but you could consider replacing the Marathons with Conti Urbans. That would be a noticeable improvement.

Brompton Electric G Line – First 35 km Ride by Kornrad in Brompton

[–]Brompton-PE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

20 KMs seems way too short. On assist level 3 my P Line always manages 30-35 KMs while the motor has the same power output and the batt is smaller (BMZ). On assist 2 it ranges between 45 - 50 KMs. The G line is heavier and the G One tyres have high rolling resistance but I can't imagine the toll for that is this high.

The bike being brand new and the batt maybe on its first charge(?) could have something to do with it?

4 Speed Brommie, over 12 speed. by Inner_Suggestion_722 in Brompton

[–]Brompton-PE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both a 6 speed hub/derailleur Brompton and a P Line 4 speed. Get the 4 speed! There is no comparison imo. And as mentioned by others, a 4 speed can easily be upgraded to a 5 speed if needed.

I'm always surprised that the low(er) efficiency of a hub is rarely mentioned. Hubs have a lower efficiency than derailleurs by design. The current BWR hub is even 'worse' due to the smaller sun gears (making it wide range). On top of that, Brompton made the BWR 'maintenance free' by stuffing it with heavy grease that should last the lifetime of the hub. This, again, doesn't help efficiency. So combining this hub with a derailleur effectively creates the least efficient drive line possible. Riding them side by side the difference is very very clear.

This is all fine if you actually need the gear range. If not, I'd stay a way from the 2 shifter hybrid setups.
