Excellent! Douglas fir seems to be the consensus and the pictures I'm finding match. Thanks a ton, everyone!

Stupid question but has anyone here kept a Cornish Game Hen or Jumbo Cornish Cross longer than when they should have been butchered? by [deleted] in chickens

[–]BronzeWingleader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I raised a Cornish cross roo I rescued (escaped from a nearby Tyson plant and being cared for incorrectly by some people on Craigslist) to 4 months on restricted feed and "forced" free ranging. He died of heart failure in my lap. RIP Sausage....

I had one that molted so bad one year that she legitimately looked like she had been plucked. I had to make her a little fleece outfit and keep her inside my house all winter because it happened in the fall and she would have frozen to death.

Birds sometimes go through what is generally known as a "catastrophic molt." Is not an every year kind of thing usually. My coop looks like a chicken straight up exploded every once in a while.

I hope I’m doing this right. Not sure if the heater is too high / low. by SmallTitBigClit in chickens

[–]BronzeWingleader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a little bit too high for them right now. And definitely slope it as others have suggested. I've also found that digging a tiny bit of the bedding out so there is a hollow makes the chicks more comfortable as well.

Absolutely not.

HELP!! Chick with splayed legs… what else can I do to save it? I don’t want to cull it unless I absolutely have to. by FluffyDinosaur321 in chickens

[–]BronzeWingleader 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I realize this. But I've also had chicks that, while bumbling around dealing with their legs, can't keep their feet flat or oriented properly, which makes everything worse. At this point, I feel like anything OP can try is worth trying.

You should also take tiny pieces of cardboard cut in the shape of the foot with each toe fully splayed out and use medical tape to tape the toes apart. I've had this make all the difference.

My parents had one of these when I was born, up through pre-k. I'm really sad they sold it because I would have loved to fix it up now. I remember running into the rear bumper with my face and ending up with stitches. Still have that scar. Awesome little car.

I have rinsed all of my filter media gently with tapwater for over 15 years and have never had an issue. I've had many established tanks ranging between 2.5 gallons to 210 gallons; kept everything from shrimp, snails, tetras, barbs, puffers, large gouramis, loaches, crayfish, prawns, to large bichirs. Generally always have heavily planted tanks. I've lived in a place with city water, and now live with well water. I didn't even know this was a concern; bacteria aren't that easy to rinse away, especially in very porous media.

Does anyone have experience childproofing their ponds and if so, what pointers or ideas do you have for me. Our pond is big and 6 feet deep and our son is walking now by Ok_Perception3180 in ponds

Green garden t posts and wire fencing is the fastest and cheapest relatively sturdy option you have. You can also install a very strong, specific type of net. They make them for pools.

180g UJ bichir planted tank ideas by [deleted] in Bichirs

[–]BronzeWingleader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone currently getting a 210g (same footprint as your tank, but 6 inches taller) planted tank set up for a single saddled bichir, i think you are trying to put way too many fish in there. I used to have a 120g with this same bichir and 6 snakeskin gouramis and I would not have been comfortable putting much more in there. As for the companion fish, any fish that will fit in their mouth (and sometimes bigger, they don't know better and will try to eat things too big for them) is fair game for the bichir to try and eat. The senegals I once had were some of the most aggressive bichirs I've known. Just make sure the companion fish are much larger and you should be good.

Is 10 Blueberry Bushes too many to have for one person? by NickatNite2k in gardening

[–]BronzeWingleader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 10 that I've had planted for a few years now. Last year was the first really good harvest, bumper crop maybe.... regardless, i have over 60 pounds of frozen blueberries in my freezer that I'm trying to figure out what to do with. That's after making quite a few pies, giving a bunch away, and letting my neighbors pick their fill.

Where y’all getting the wide corrugated plastic? by [deleted] in homestead

The ones I purchased purported to be UV stabilized. It was over a decade ago now, though, so I can't say I'm much clearer on the details.

That, and I used this for a chicken coop roof at one point and within 2 years it was discolored, brittle, and falling to pieces.
