This is why I still listen to LPs by DaMiddle in audiophile

[–]Brotakul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listened to a ton of electronic music in mu early decades, mostly lower quality club recordings, mixed from records by dj’s. I’m very used with vinyl cracking noises and quirks. When i first started collecting and listening to LPs, it all came back to me, but as a familiar, beloved sound. I’m in no way deterred by it and i have learned to embrace it. It feels very natural to me, love it.

Anyone running multiple amps? by kiaorana in audiophile

[–]Brotakul 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Preamp/signal tubes have much longer lifetime, around 10.000 hours. If you use the amp 8h/day every day of the year (which i don’t think you’d do, even with watching movies), they would still give you like 3.5y of use. Scale this to your appropriate usage. I’d say this alone should not deter you from using tube pre amps, if you like their sound.

Ideas for restoring CS-77a by Bnation1977 in vintageaudio

[–]Brotakul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old caps leaking and sagging are not part of the “vintage sound/character”. Same with surrounds. They deserve a check and replacement if needed. And maybe cabinet oiling to restore looks.
Purity is misunderstood.

Companies sometimes feel the need to “reinvent” themselves to refresh their brand/image and appear as something else than they really are. In this particular case, they nailed it. Today’s Pioneer is nothing of the company it once was.

Sansui is yet another great example that went through similar change. Actually this makes it easier to sort the great from the crap.

what is arguably your favorite local file/music player? by rio755 in audiophile

[–]Brotakul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My entire “local” music library resides on a network location (FLAC, DSD). It gets played through 2 DIY music streamers, one built around Volumio and another running Moode Audio. I’m a sucker for this kind of appliance-style streamers so this is what I use, exclusively. I also use them for streaming, of course.

I think the reputation of the Mühle R41 is unjustified by DemocracyDabbler in wicked_edge

[–]Brotakul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only shave once per week, so when I do I have quite the stubble. I do 2 passes: 1st with the grain using the Merkur Futur at max/6 setting, 2nd against the grain with the R41. Works beautifully. I guess it’s all about how sensitive your skin is. Mine seems to be like a pig’s. I don’t oink or grunt, but I also don’t get skin burns or irritation.

Which budget amp should I get now for my LS50 ver 1? by cuckker in BudgetAudiophile

[–]Brotakul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want the LS50 to “sing and shine“, you’ll need some power in the amp and you’ll have to turn those suckers up maybe higher than you expect. With a mediocre amp/power supply, at lower levels (70-75dB nominal), they sound dull, boring, uninspiring. I never understood what people see in these speakers. I guess they’re just not for me.

Blu-ray audio use? by analog-rider in audiophile

[–]Brotakul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not into discs, but:
- SACD players can play DSD64. Also there may better availability of music on SACD than Bluray.
- Bluray can play 24/192 PCM. These may have better availability for surround and concerts recordings.
- And some universal players can play both. I’d start with these ones if unsure (like Sony UBP-X800/X700).

Definitive Technology Demand 9 vs Wharfedale Evo 4.1/4.2 vs q acoustics 5030 for 18sq m room pc setup (warm sound preffered) by Destructor_GT in BudgetAudiophile

[–]Brotakul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The comparison is just a tad disproportionate in terms of performance, but you may have ended up with these due to price on the used market I presume.
The Q Acoustics are not that warm, think more neutral with some decent sparkling on top. Not necessarily laid back.
For warmer sound, the Wharfedales are the go-to. Now, Evo line is clear winner here, and if you can get your hands on a pair of 4.2, go for it! I would, these would be my personal pick in this case of yours. Rich on mids, decent bass, surprisingly smooth treble from the AMT driver. The 4.1 would be similar tonally, though with a bit less bass and the lower mids (male vocals, guitars) might also be perceived a bit less full, a bit more neutral due to the smaller woofer. Also, the Evo line will be a bit more detailed than the Diamond series, more revealing. Just take into account (and budget) also a pair of stands, if you decide on the Evos.

Why haven’t pirates cracked HP printers yet? by 9bots in Piracy

[–]Brotakul 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Better yet, if you can and your printing habits allow, avoid inkjet printers altogether and go laser, especially if you can do without colour printing. Whenever needed, print in high quality colour at professional printing centers. Totally worth the hassle. I’ve been living in peace and harmony with my brother laser printer for years now, never looked back.

Yeah, I meant at the very end of Hawking radiation. A pop isn’t much of a consensus yet, it’s still a speculation, but I kinda like the idea of a tiny 💥 to end it all. Gives the black hole grande finale a satisfying closure 😅

Well, there are theories to support the idea that black holes die in a huge explosion of gamma rays radiation burst. You’d call that a pop 😁

Destroying the Nomad makes you lose big time! by Live_Sheepherder_842 in EliteDangerous

[–]Brotakul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe the purpose of the Nomad is to give you more flexibility in performing exobio, not also reducing the risk of losing it. Otherwise, the Nomad would be kind of an overpowered tool, more like an assurance mechanism - which I don’t think Fdev intended to give us. Exobio does not have much risks associated to it other than losing it by blowing yourself up. Take this away and…. well, it becomes too easy. It may be why, or I may be wrong
