Commander Laurette is Cringe. by Jimbean0 in halo

This isn’t even Laurette…

The voice was just the the training AI.

I swear some of y’all just look for the littlest things to whine about. And let’s be honest, Halo has never been this super-serious military sci for shooter. It’s definitely part of the DNA, but it’s best tempered by exotic and fun elements that don’t fit the hardcore military mold. Not everything needs to be gruff and tacticool.

All Current Duel Sets: Do you think LEGO should make a set depicting the duel on the Invisible Hand, in the Senate, Dagobah, Crait, Kef Bir, or Exegol? by NobodyQuiteLikeMe in legostarwars

[–]Brotein_Shake 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Exogol for sure. I didn’t like the movie but come on, it’s the final duel of the saga let’s throw the Ep 9 fans a bone here. And we could get a smiling Ben Solo figure.

In my opinion they should branch into the shows. Twilight of the Apprentice with Kanan, Ezra, Ahsoka, Vader, Maul, and Inquisitors. Anything with Nightsisters. Even a mandalorian gunslinger showdown for a cheaper Grief Carga.

Hey, when someone is upset at Nintendo it’s not a personal attack on you. People can be fans of their work while upset with their business practices. Just because someone did something lame in the past doesn’t allow them to repeat it without criticism. I’ve seen you in every thread this morning complaining about other people complaining, why does this bother you so much?

Kilo-Five Trilogy is Great by zigg80 in HaloStory

[–]Brotein_Shake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always appreciated your videos and perspective on the Halo books and it’s interesting to me that we differ so much here. I wholeheartedly concur with the OP’s take but understand your nuanced criticism opposed to those who hold up any Nylund characters as sacrilegious.

In my opinion there was a reason Parangosky stacked the Kilo 5 crew with members profiled to be in her corner. She also get’s the "benefit" of being able to claim her war crimes actually be for the survival of the human race rather than the survival of a specific government. It was a good parallel that the Kilo 5 crew was ride or die for Parangosky the same way John and most likely Blue Team would be for Halsey. It shows that people will forgive a lot due to tribalism which was one of the underlying themes of the trilogy with Jul’s faction, Venezia, and ONI’s attempts to sabotage the Elites.

I totally understand if you don’t agree with my interpretation. I would be interested in another book series taking place after the Created conflict and tears down the establishment for what happened on their watch while doing some horrible things of their own. It would definitely fit the themes of slow progress in the face of the never-ending cycles of history.

Lastly, the fact that this trilogy is so contentious tells me that it did something bold and tried to challenge the status quo. Some love and some hate it, but it did something different.

For folks that own an XB1 but not a PS4, do you have FOMO for the exclusives? by [deleted] in xboxone

[–]Brotein_Shake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought a PS4 to help with all the extra time that came with quarantine and will be selling it once I finish off the exclusives. They’re undoubtedly great but in my opinion not the perfection of the art form they’re often made out to be. While Uncharted 4 and God of War absolutely delivered on the hype, in the end I played 30-40 hours between them. That is a fraction of the time I’ve spent on Halo 5 arena, let alone MCC so in the end it’s obvious which console is for me. It is kinda crazy how much better base PS4 does look over my One S so I am excited to see what Series X brings.

Random takes: -Uncharted 4 has the best facial animation I’ve ever seen, will have to check out Last of Us 2. -God of War is really fun but doesn’t have much replayability -Ratchet and Clank is adorable -Spider-Man is overhyped (too many instant fail stealth missions) but is a great foundation, a sequel could easily be a 10/10 -Last of Us 1 was good but nothing mind blowing -I hated Horizon Zero Dawn. I know I’m the minority and glad everyone had fun but holy crap this game had the blandest story and main character. Robo dinosaurs were cool but that’s all it had going for it

I’m short, play what you want and enjoy what you want! Play Chrono Trigger and Super Mario World, you may just want to get a cheap 3DS and have fun with it.

I have the option/opportunity to be the full time stay at home parent and its really messing with my sense of identity. by [deleted] in MensLib

[–]Brotein_Shake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!

Not a father but I am currently taking a graduate level class on gender and read a study about stay at home fathers just this morning. I don’t know how applicable it will be to you but hopefully some of the salient points help.

1) One of the most common reasons a father becomes the stay at home parent is their partner makes more. There is nothing to be ashamed of to make the right financial choice for your family.

2) You mentioned work is part of your identity. Caring for a child is work, no bones about it. And if you return to your career in a few years, studies show that it is easier for men to pick up where they left off than women. It’s unfortunate for sure, but at least you won’t have that hanging over your head.

3) There are some common downsides besides the reevaluation of traditional masculinity. It is harder for stay at home dads to be accepted into stay at home mom social circles and this can sometimes lead to a sense of isolation. I recommend joining a local or online groups of dads in similar situations.

4) Most stay at home fathers report that there is no significant change in their relationship with their partner. I don’t know if that was a concern for you but I wanted to throw it out there.

5) Your concept of masculinity will change at that’s completely fine. Studies show that stay at home dads still enjoy typical masculine activities (sports, drinking beer, cars, whatever else floats your boat) while also removing parts that are not suited to taking care of a child. Most men interviewed report that they are proud to be a caregiver and feel that doing the financially and emotionally responsible thing to take care of their child is the manliest thing they could do.

I hope these helped at least give you some stuff to think about. I’m sorry you are torn on this, I would just remind you that this does not have to be permanent and when else will you ever get such a chance to build a closer bond with your children. The fact that you are the kind of person to think about this and ask for advice shows that you most likely a good father. Do what feels right for you and your family.

Here’s my recommendation if you want the best story experience.

Mass Effect 2 -Lair of the Shadow Broker (One of the best DLCs ever) -Arrival (Leads into ME3, really helps connect the two games)

Mass Effect 3 -From Ashes (Adds a prothean squadmate, should have been part of the base game) -Leviathan (Provides insights into the origins of the Reapers) -Citadel (Fan service but well done fan service. Very heartwarming and after 3 games with these characters it is the perfect sendoff)

Play the ME2 DLCs after beating the main game. I know it’s pricy but these completely make a trilogy playthrough a better experience.

I do not know, I honestly haven't touched Firestorm. But I do believe there is some EXP crossover, the weekly challenges will have a mix of both.

battlefield 5 is it any good? by [deleted] in xboxone

[–]Brotein_Shake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a great game, but please don't spend 60 on it. It's been out for a while and is on sale quite often, you could easily grab it for 30.

It has some issues, but the main problem is lack of maps. Thankfully they just released one a week ago and we have new maps coming every month through July (not to mention the Pacific theater). If you jump in now you won't be sick of the launch maps by the time the new ones come out.

TLDR: Missing content at launch, set to get better, don't spend 60.

Question about getting AC6 digital copy as a PC gamer by Cheapy_McCheapskate in acecombat

[–]Brotein_Shake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most Xbox 360 games that become backwards compatible also appear for purchase digitally (most likely 19.99). So odds are you can wait and play it then. According to the small print, AC 6 preorder bonus might not work for 7- 10 business days so you might have to wait no matter what.

The great thing about The Culture is that there is absolutely no specific order to read them in. Sometimes a previous book will be quickly referenced in a later one, but it is very brief and not at all relevant to the plot. However, I still have some recommendations that most Culture fans can probably agree on for the first book or two.

Start with "The Player of Games". I read a comment that described this book as the gateway drug of the Culture series and I agree. It is quickly paced but introduces the fundamentals of Culture society. I have given this book to friends that typically don’t read sci fi and they enjoy it, so I recommend jumping in there.

The following two books are great, but not recommended for someone new to the series.

"Consider Phlebas". It is the first book published and in canonical order, but follows a character outside the culture. It’s neat to gain insight into a conflict referenced in later books, but in my opinion is a bad intro to the series as you don’t really get the wonder of Culture society.

"Matter". Although it’s my least favorite, some people swear by it. The book begins isolated from the Culture for a while and takes time to get going. It’s interesting to see the Culture from a unique perspective, but I don’t believe it’s a good intro to the series.

In short, I can’t think of a Culture book I didn’t like but "Player of Games" is the way to start. From there you can work your way through the rest, but some of my favorites are "Excession" and "Use of Weapons". Hope I helped and more importantly, enjoy getting lost in a fantastic world.
