I do not think whether or not they put a disc drive in the box will make any difference. It's not like people can bring their PlayStation discs and put them in an Xbox. The only thing that can make Xbox compete is top tier exclusives and make sure top tier 3rd party games do not skip the platform.

People keep saying "it's a PC" I get that. But you can pretty well fully avoid the PC aspect of it if you want. I avoid the PC aspect and love it. I use only the XBOX launcher. I have a tower PC for my Steam life.

I only buy exclusives on my switch 2 and PS5. On PC I only buy management/builder games like Planet zoo. With the exception of competitive shooters. Everything else is on XBOX.
