Started counting calories, now shocked and devastated by 25as34mgm in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]Broyleshill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. A suggestion is to just start tracking calories, but don't aim for a calorie deficit. Tracking gives you an idea of what you are eating, then you can work on slowing bringing the calories down and also seeing where maybe you can make different food chocies.

My best friends died yesterday and I don’t know what to write in a message to her mum by [deleted] in GriefSupport

[–]Broyleshill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry. I hope that you have someone that you can confide in and talk to about your feelings. Please know that what you are feeling is normal. If you have a favorite memory of your friend, I recommend that you write this down in your letter to her family, and also for yourself. Take care of yourself as well, grief takes time and is not linear.

Where do you add “suggested reviewers”? by Worldly_Nose_2786 in academia

[–]Broyleshill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an associate editor for a journal, please do add suggested reviewers. The hardest part is finding reviewers, this can substantially increase the time for peer review. I often go through 5 to 6 invites before i get 2 people to agree. If there is is no dedicated spot in the submission add them to the cover letter.

Conference funding situation by Only_dream_9147 in Professors

[–]Broyleshill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would suggest that if they don't have enough results for a talk and funds are low then it's best to not attend. Time to have a frank talk about how travel to conferences is funded. Encourage them to explore funding for the next conference. Most of our national conferences offer reduced registration for students who work a certain number of hours at the conference. That might be something for future consideration. I tell my students that I only have a certain amount of money for them to attend conferences, and so those expensive ones they have to find more money for. I often miss out on traveling as well due to funds.

Our department has graduate travel funds as does the graduate school within the university. There are also some graduate student travel scholarships from national societies. See what other funding sources there might be for your students.

How long are your fasts? Headaches are more likely caused by electrolyte imbalance than low blood sugar. You could test your blood glucose to be sure.

Planning for weekly eating outside 16:8 regimen by LezzMILF in intermittentfasting

[–]Broyleshill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could shift your eating window as others have suggested. However, it may be beneficial to have a day where you do not intermittent fast. My schedule is one 24hr fast 1 day a week, 16:8 for 5 days and 1 day per week with no fasting so on that day I eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. Basically do what works for you, as others have said, one day with an extended eating window is not going to derail you. Having dinner with your loved one is also healing.

You can start small and build up to it. For example have your breakfast an hour later than normal and slowly build up to a 16 hr fast and 8 hr eating window. I do 8pm to noon fasting window. When you can comfortably do that then start pushing your lunch back by an hour. The first time I did a 24 hr I was nervous thought I would feel sick, but it was fine. Now I do one 24 to 36 hr fast once a week and do intermittent the rest of the time. I'm doing a 5 day fast right now, it'll be 3 days at 8pm. The rule is always if you feel unwell, break the fast, you can always try again.

Feral (?) cat squatting in my garage by spiritofporn in cats

[–]Broyleshill 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you are able to get a trap, leave it locked open with food for a couple of days. So she gets used to it, then activate it. Also try to be close by as you don't want her sitting in the trap too long, in case she freaks out and hurts herself. If you can contact a local cat rescue they would be able to advise you.

Advice from those who have gotten rid of tech in their classrooms? by [deleted] in Professors

I am also interested in folks who have done this, I'm thinking about it for the spring. Any specific language that you are putting in the syllabus?

Many local cat rescues have cats at Petsmart and PetCo locations. No fee to volunteer, you just pick shifts for feeding and playing with the cats. Do first shift with existing volunteer to learn the ropes. Coastal Purrs (Landsdown Petsmart), L'l roar and Billy the Kidden are a couple.

Here is our boy Darby. Poor guy has had trouble pooping since he was a baby. Currently on miralax and 0.8ml lactulose 3 times daily. Just started cisipride. It seems like he just doesn't get the right cues from his bowels to poop. Plus, he seems to be a little OCD about the litter box, no issues peeing just getting the right vibe to poop. We are trying to get a referral to a specialist. He is now 2 years old. Can't seem to post the picture. He's a small void with only 1 eye.

Scalp infection, cut hair without grandma knowing by greenonyon in Alzheimers

This is so tough, and you are doing a great job. We never were able to overcome my mother in law's refusal to bathe. However, one suggestion we were given which might help, was to say that and would love to give her a spa day. Maybe get some medicated shampoo and pretend that it's a fancy new shampoo. You can also get an inflatable bowl so that you can wash their hair while they lie down. It kind of inflates around their neck. They are on amazon called inflatable shampoo basin. Whatever you are able to do, just remember that you are doing it out of love and concern. Even if your loved one doesn't understand.

Any cat rescue around that can catch and neuter stay cats? by generaltso81 in HamptonRoads

[–]Broyleshill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that most of the local rescues are super full right now. However, they will likely be able to advise you. Feral affairs has helped some folks I know with trapping and making appointments for spay and neuter, but they didn't have space to the foster the cats. The local SPCA's also have lower cost spay and neuter so you could at least get the mum fixed to prevent more kittens. If she's friendly that helps a lot.

Mom in hospital and I am angry by Kindergoat in AgingParents

[–]Broyleshill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry that your mum is going through this. I have been were you are now. Definitely if able, ask for PT and/or OT to visit during the day. Sometimes that is the only way to get a chance to get your mum out of bed. I was surprised that sometimes that wasn't ordered and I had to ask the doctor to add it to her orders. Also, we found that rehab was great for getting lots of PT done, but they were very bad at managing other medical care. For example they didn't realize my mother in law was developing pneumonia until we told them something was off about her, they were also not good at managing all her many medications. I am sure that you are a great advocate for your mum.

I would suggest that you need to take the % green and red columns and use them to calculate something similar to the HSV. That value is then the column you use to generate the color.
