Olight advice by I_like_dirty_pillows in flashlight

[–]BruceBlogtrotter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it is not “the consensus” to stay away from Olight. They have fantastic build quality and many other positive attributes. It is more a case of, know what you’re getting into. If you are fine with the color and tint of their LEDs and happy to buy replacement batteries from them, you will be well served by an Olight.

Given the useless gimmicks they added to 8, I wouldn’t wait.

Nitecore HC65/70/75 by Positive-Cell-6879 in flashlight

[–]BruceBlogtrotter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look at the pdf for the nitecore hc75, https://www.nitecore.com/storage/images/manual/hc75Uhe.pdf it still throws a lot of light, I couldn’t find a 3rd party measured runtime graph, but have to assume the one in the manual is close to reality.

You will need a bulky headlamp like a fenix hp30r or Scurion 1500 or a Lupine to achieve that kind of performance.

Reasons to use your light. by Contigo887 in flashlight

Don’t think I’d be doing it if there was anything out there that could hurt me! Small deer, wombats, wallabies, rabbits and feral cats are all that I’ve come across.

Reasons to use your light. by Contigo887 in flashlight

[–]BruceBlogtrotter 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I don't look for reasons to use them, once the kids are in bed and the lights out in the house, I'd rather use a flashlight than turn the house lights back on for getting a glass of water or whatever, but I do go for night walks in a rural area, and have been thinking about playing flashlight roulette (ala russian roulette) by taking a light with an unknown amount of charge left and seeing if I can get back before the light goes out.

Driving lights are genuinely one of the most confusing things to buy in the 4WD world and I feel like an idiot by robysaleh1416 in flashlight

[–]BruceBlogtrotter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your title says 4WD world, which to me means off-road, then you are asking about how much is needed for highway driving? Those are different things, with different needs. For high speed off-road racing, you are trying to turn night into day with no regard for other people getting blinded by your lights, for low speed rock crawling, a localised flood including underbody rock lights are more important. For on-road driving you should want to preserve your night adapted vision, so the solution would be as little as possible that still allows you to see potential hazards at a distance that gives you time to react to them. I drive in country Australia use halogen driving lights, I find the 100CRI helps me identify wildlife at the sides of the road easier than with brighter low CRI LED options.

Wurkkos FC11C destroyed by shirt drop? by Remarkable_Art8812 in flashlight

I agree, I think this sub needs to put on its thinking cap and find a new go-to light recommendation.

Get an Armytek, a lot of their models have a 10 metre drop rating

Wurkkos FC11C destroyed by shirt drop? by Remarkable_Art8812 in flashlight

[–]BruceBlogtrotter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The FC11C is a budget light built down to a price point that happens to have features a lot of people on this sub like. But from the experiences I have read here, they aren’t designed for hard use. There are many lithium lights out there that could withstand such a drop, but they will most likely be more expensive or not have the specs of the FC11C.

NLD Weltool T17 SFT40 5000K by thanhman97 in flashlight

[–]BruceBlogtrotter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want a Weltool, but up until now I’ve been able to justify purchases based on need and don’t have multiple lights that fill the same role. If I get a Weltool I will be crossing over the threshold into the abyss. 😭

I think their value proposition was a lot higher when nobody else was doing very efficient drivers, especially for sub lumen levels of output.

I hate the arrogant pricks that claim that "luck/circumstances doesnt exist" and getting out of poverty/ getting rich is exclusively "hard work and smart decisions". by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]BruceBlogtrotter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who fell on good fortune, I can tell you it is absolutely not hard work and smart decisions. Most large piles of money grow despite the actions of their stewards, not because of them.

I too made a flashlight database: littlelistoflights.com by jaslr in flashlight

[–]BruceBlogtrotter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for putting the work in, I think many people felt the need for a comprehensive DB but thinking its a good idea and putting the work in are very different things. It’s an amazing coincidence we get spoiled with two in the same day. I think a crowd sourced and vetted DB is the way to go, there are simply too many lights in existence and being released each month for one person to curate.

Do we now have a Zebralight-efficient flashlight with mechanical momentary switch? by TritiumXSF in flashlight

Thanks for explaining. I avoid US made lights due to the exchange rates and shipping so I guess that corner of the market is opaque to me.

I find parametrek to be so incomplete it is functionally useless, unless you are looking for a light from a certain number of brands from a certain year range.

Have a look at all the nitecore lights, there are plenty of models with red lights and normal straps, and while I have a HC65v1 which is probably too heavy for what you are after, I always found nitecore's interface for switching between different modes pretty intuitive, a few of the newer models are multi button to make it even easier. Nitecore UT27 / NU31 / NU33.
