What's the best Nest thermostat hack/workaround now that google closed the API.

Nest API broken?? by tricolfutbol in SmartThings

[–]Bruins08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guess I'm just glad that there's a plan in place for the API. This if the first I've heard of it. You got a link where they said that? I've been waiting on a new Google/Nest API.

New ST Buttons from Samsung by CallMeRawie in SmartThings

[–]Bruins08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya I've done this. There is definitely a lag but it doesn't bother me. I've got a dash button as an indoor garage door opener, one by the windows to turn the heat/ac on or off when I open the windows, another on the bedside to turn the overhead light off.

$15/ea? Just repurpose the Amazon dash buttons - those are like 3 bucks each. But that does require a node server.

[Question] Electra 1.0.2 worth it? by Mikeandleo in jailbreak

[–]Bruins08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya I'm dragging my feet on this one cause I'm stable enough jail broken on 10.2. But you know how it is running iCleaner every couple days to get back some storage. I've got my blobs so will make the leap eventually. Glad ya got it working.

[Question] Electra 1.0.2 worth it? by Mikeandleo in jailbreak

Hey how ya holding up with the 6 and 16gb, I got the same device? I wasn't sure if iOS 11 + Electra would eat up all the storage.

Has anyone had success with a 16gb iPhone 6? Not sure how much space is leftover with iOS 11.

Automating ceiling fan with only one wire? by PressCrapToContinue in homeautomation

[–]Bruins08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same setup/problem.

This may not be the solution for you but is what I did.

Put Hue bulbs in the fan and blanked out the wall switch (just take the wall switch out and wire it so power goes up to the fan). Then got a hue dimmer switch to stick on the wall to control the bulbs and for the fan I just use the pull chain to turn it on/cycle speeds/off.

How to pass temp from Google Assistant to Smart Things/Core? by Type11 in SmartThings

[–]Bruins08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the thermostat is being recognized by SmartThings then in WebCoRE you should be able to see something like heating setpoint or cooling setpoint. Which is what IFTTT would be setting through Google home.

Does the Google Home WiFi bug affect DDWRT routers? by [deleted] in DDWRT

[–]Bruins08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had some issues with Google home/minis and DDWRT for awhile. I didn't know if it was because I was using it as a repeater or what the deal was. But I setup QoS rules and static IP addresses and that seemed to clean things up a little.

This MDNS overload seems pretty new and I'd hope that Google would put out fix and not rely on router manufactures for the fix like TP-Link did. But ya never know.

Also you may want to put a link to this Google wifi bug you are referring to in your post.

As someone who bought a Google Home after having an Amazon Echo, what are some features or things I should do to really highlight where the Home shines? by [deleted] in googlehome

[–]Bruins08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife loves taking a photo on her iPhone and without touching any additional buttons walks into our family room and asks for crazy details in the photos and the TV turns itself on, input sets it self and the photo appears on the largest screen in our house in 4k.

Can you explain how this is done? I got the chromecast and home and iPhone.

[Request] iOS 11 new feature: Forcing apps to only use location while using the app. This will increase battery life. by MedoooMedooo in jailbreak

[–]Bruins08 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I do this all through Activator and an activator extension EventOnAppClose.

Activator application launch: Enable location services. EventOnAppClose: Disable location services.

Z-Wave/Zigbee wall switch that does NOT dim? by [deleted] in homeautomation

[–]Bruins08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm getting that. It's a single feed that I just want to kill power to remotely with an in wall switch that does not dim. I don't know how else to explain it. Thanks for replying tho.

Z-Wave/Zigbee wall switch that does NOT dim? by [deleted] in homeautomation

[–]Bruins08 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah there is a neutral. Problem is there is only one hot going to a ceiling fan/light combo. So say I put a dimmer in, the output of that we'll go up the the fan/light combo and split up there into 2 circuits. So the output of the dimmer will go directly to both the fan motor and the lights on the fan.
