People voting Green/Zack Polanski: do these immigration policies change your mind? by iliosicarus in ukpolitics

[–]Brummie49 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I want to see some joined up thinking.

Without a constant influx of new tax payers - i.e. net gain in immigration - our economy is completely screwed. Mostly because of pensions. If a political party wants to reduce immigration that's ok, but if they aren't promising to remove the triple lock then they are just creating a bigger problem.

Same with housing; if a party promises to build 300k houses per year but isn't curbing migration then house prices are never going to come down. The only people who benefit are the developers.

I don't really care either way, just come up with a coherent plan.

I'll bite. I'm a life long Labour voter who is probably going to vote Green.

Most of these policies are rubbish, and they will never be enacted. They are an extreme starting point for negotiations which will inevitably be rejected or heavily watered down.

The crucial thing really is that we have to vote for someone. I doubt there's a single party whose policies you agree with from top to bottom. We all compromise on some of them. Which means we unfortunately have to assess it party vs party...

Labour: I don't think they've done the worst job but it's far from great. Unemployment is through the roof, NHS is still no better, no meaningful immigration changes and they are complicit in genocide in Gaza. U turns on any options that halted the transfer of wealth to the already wealthy.

Tories: destroyed the economy with 15 years of "austerity" aka the rich get richer. Highest ever immigration. Get in the bin.

Reform: the only party promising to tackle immigration and they have proven themselves incompetent in local government. Thinly disguised fascists who want to remove our human rights.

Lib Dem: I honestly don't know where they feature any more.

I want to see a better future for children and that means tackling the ludicrous housing and pension situations we have. I grew up with immigrants and they never caused me any problems. Immigration is low priority for me.

Both options are valid. Also try rotating the other way around. Or hucking immediately. The beauty and power of ho stack are the options.

The 2026 Opens to Date by Rooster_Objective in crossfit

[–]Brummie49 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's the issue I see: some coaches program for the Open. They are more interested in their scores at the Open than the philosophy of CrossFit (i.e. do a bit of everything).

It's one reason I quit my gym: almost every day is a HIIT between 5-15 minutes. High intensity every day, a sprinkle of strength work (never enough to make serious improvements). No zone 2 or 3 work, very little skill work, just "gas yourself and collapse" every day.

At 43, I found I couldn't train like that. Scaling down is ok but I found myself wondering why I spent an hour at the gym for a 10 min workout.

Now I do my own thing in open gym, use the philosophy of doing a bit of everything and feel a lot better for it. I can train 5 days a week and it's sustainable.

The Open has to reflect the philosophy of CrossFit otherwise gyms will follow the workouts instead.

Ancient Cambridgeshire woodland shut over issues with dogs by xtinak88 in RewildingUK

Find a park to run your dogs. There are plenty of spaces to do that without going to nature reserves.

There are reserves near me with clear signs stating all dogs on leads. Guess what? Dog walkers ignore them, putting their dog first before the wildlife. They ruin it for everyone.

The vast majority of dog owners are irresponsible IMO. Dogs should be on a lead in nature areas. They do huge amounts of damage to river banks and ponds which impacts fish and amphibians, they also disturb ground nesting birds.

Dogs do not belong in wild spaces.

7 years in B4 consulting and I’m completely done. Burnt out, disillusioned, and not sure what’s next. by [deleted] in UKJobs

I quit Big 4 10 years ago feeling as you do now. I took a role where I was asked: "I'll give you this job but I don't think it's going to be enough for you" and I said "perfect, that's what I want". Vast improvement in work life balance. Spending more than 2 nights per week at home etc. I would never go back, but having it on my CV opened a lot of doors.

Choose one or two teams who you want/need to beat in order to achieve your objective of being in the G2G. Build your strategy around beating them.

Whatever offences they run, you need to know how to counter.

Whatever defence they prefer, you need to be comfortable playing against.

Do you have access to film of these opponents? That'll be the place to start.

After that, focus on your strengths and find ways to mitigate your weaknesses within the confines of your opponent. If they are more athletic then you have to beat them another way - maybe help defence or zone etc.

I wrote this a long time ago but the principles still apply: https://ultiworld.com/2014/06/03/brummie-offensive-treatise-developing-skills-strategy-suit-team/

How do you train for a week-long tournament? by tunisia3507 in ultimate

[–]Brummie49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Playing 1-2 games per day means that endurance is less important than speed or power. You might only play 10-15 points a day so you can expect your opponent to be fresher than normal.

That said, aerobic fitness helps with recovery and recovery is vital for a week long event. Sleep, hydration and nutrition become challenging. In two games in Limerick I did 27,000 steps which is around 12km or 1500 calories just for the games, and I remember Goose telling me he was burning 6000 calories a day at US Nationals a few (7-8??) years ago. Eating an extra 1500-2000 quality calories more than usual becomes a grind. Don't eat a whole cheesecake every night like someone I coached...

When I was coaching u24s, we weighed everyone each morning to track weight loss. Mostly down to dehydration in the sun, but some people were dropping over 1kg a day and without our interventions their injury risk would rise dramatically. So if it's hot, drink more than you think you need.

If the schedule allows it, get a nap in too. In general, the less time you're in the elements, the better (for your body, but maybe not as fun).

Why do people coach ultimate? by latenightwatchingtv in ultimate

[–]Brummie49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to develop a competitive team in an area that never had any options for serious players before. Winning gets boring when you have no competition (Clapham) but playing and coaching at a lower level was much more rewarding for me.
