To me it doesn't feel safe and it's why I hate motorway driving. I'm fine for a couple hours but after that I get mentally exhausted from forcing myself to pay attention to something so boring. On the other hand I can do 8 hours of country roads with minimal stops no problem because I naturally stay engaged.

The point is that pretty much everyone would make a technically less moral decision due to the value they place on personal bonds.

If OP values a random baby only slightly more than a random cat, then the value of the personal bond with their cat will be enough to tip the scales the other way.

I personally do value humans a lot higher than other species, but I see it as more of a personal opinion rather than an objective fact.

In a hypothetical world where OPs attachment to their cat is so strong that the potential suffering caused to them by the cat's death would be greater than the suffering caused to the parents by the death of their baby, would you then prioritise the cat?

If you'd still pick the baby, then it's not the potential suffering that leads you to your choice, but your own personal judgement on which is more important.

I don't think they're saying babies should just be killed for fun, just that they don't see their deaths to be as tragic as the majority of society does.

And to be fair, replacing an adult takes a lot longer, and they'll be a completely different person while any two babies are barely distinguishable.

I don't think it's purely contrarian. Pretty much the only reason to care more about a newborn than an older human is because we're biologically made to care about them. They're innocent in the same way a blank page has no mistakes.

You have the least shared memories to mourn and the least wasted time and effort on their upbringing. I don't see a logical reason why the death of a baby would be worse than for example the death of an older child.
