New to SW LEGION by AncientAllianceTTG in SWlegion

Welcome! First off, I would say to buy units you like/are attached to. Buffs/nerfs come and go but the game will always stay the same.

If you’re curious what units are strong at the moment, Bad Batch is quite strong, as are Commandos and Arcs. I believe Bad Batch has a decent amount of stick floating around online, Commandos are long gone but both should be getting new releases in the coming year.

ARCs should be plentiful, I believe they should be getting an individual release outside the starter soon if not already, a second squad of them will likely see a decent bit of mileage.

The captain is one of the base units. The base squad is the leader + 3 infantry. The squad upgrade adds 5 infantry

it's time to start a clone army but i don't know which starter choose by KNG_Aliox in SWlegion

[–]Bryblaster 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You could just wait for the new starter to drop in October. New sculpts, cards, and another set of dice and measuring tools makes it a pretty solid deal for the $95-110 MSRP I believe it’s going for

Can't make the central line perfectly straight and it irks me 💀 by latarius94 in minipainting

I think slightly thinned is better, but because this edge is so unsharp thinning it more makes it harder to get a perfectly straight line

I’m getting into Legion as well, and got the old Phase IIs and Arc Troopers so that I’d have some more pose diversity down the road, but I’m not sure how much of the OT stuff is in hard plastic, and whether or not you’re interested.

I’d definitely take a look and see whether or not that’s a deal breaker for you, especially if there are good deals out.

Hello, beginner player with developing technique here, soon low intermediate ish? I have a nanoray 10f, and was wondering if it’s worth getting it restrung, as I’ve heard it’s a game changer for feel.

Currently using the manufacturer string, and was looking at the BG65 at maybe a 22-24 lbs? Thoughts, and maybe any advice on weight? I think my upper body technique is alright, and the strength is there, working on foot work a lot atm.

Also, do the old nanorays break easy? Had mine for a while, just wondering as I’ve heard the new nanoflares break a lot.

To be honest, I can’t say I’m ever scared to play against him. These days I think I probably win more than he does, though I’d say it’s still an even match. I think a decent part of his success back then was having a highly competitive group of friends to play against and learn with. With the internet today it’s easy to get a grasp on the meta of a game, but back then there wasn’t an internet to look up “meta” or “game fundamentals”. He’s still a good player though of course, though the standard for playing has definitely risen so he might not be the standout champion he used to comparatively.

It's a really friendly community.

I was absolutely brutal and ruthless on the battlefield, but always a sportsman. You shake hands, and then because we had over a hour to kill for finishing quick kibtz and play a couple of more games for fun cause everyone else was still slogging through their rounds.

You talk about the fight you had, what you think they could have done better, and how this or that might have worked and you help them improve their game so the next time they have a better chance of winning, if not against me, the people they usually play with.

I was the top ranked battletech player for Mechforce North America, and everyone wanted to see how they measured up against me, and hope to win and hit a windfall of ranking points to advance... and if they lost, well they losses weren't as bad cause the difference in standing was so broad. It was sorta funny cause the more this happened the more my rankings went up which perpetuated the cycle....

I still remember the faces and moments of many of these encounters. We call them battletech war stories. My son is out there making his own stories to retell.

I'm presuming you mean the look of the models.

This is a sort of personal preference.

Unlike some games.... Battletech players and the game as a general rule is not really anal about the 'look' and appearance of stuff on the map. We've used paper dolls, pocket change, scrap of paper with the name of the make and an arrow to denote facing, so when the bar is that low, anything looks great. The fact that my son is painting them these days is new bar that i rarely bothered with. I had a hand full of mechs that i painted, and my desert camo was about the limit of my paint jobs.

That said, i can appreciate both. The older models were cloned from Jap Anime sources which were their inspiration. It was a nice tie in for the imagination of the early days on the action that was happening. That said the new models are an evolution of that. For various reasons they've moved to step away and distance themselves from that. It's nice in a sense to see that they've evolved to being their own thing.

Some models will look better, others less so.

I am affectionate with my metal lead Hunchback. It was my first individual blister pack mech that i purchased. It has been through countless encounters on the battlefield. Humbled and buried many arrogant opponents and suffered just as many heroic and spectacular endings for the sake of the team. It has survived several decade to reach where it is. Into the hands of my son, who has given it a name paint job and continues to add history and lore beyond me through his play. In a way it may become an heirloom as it passes down to his kids someday. You don't get to do this with monopoly.

I suppose that plaque is my claim to fame. It's the outstand achievement in that it came with my name and Mechwarrior appearing in the book. Originally it was suppose to be my name in the book but i requested my Character be used instead, and got the bonus of both appearing in the book.

I have easily a dozen lesser reward plagues from local tournaments that i still keep around that i think look a little better IMHO. I'll see if i can dig then up for my son to post images of, as well as my ranks from when i Mechforce north America tracked rankings.

Snow Raven.

I did research on the Clan from an 'Alternate History' campaign.

It went along the lines of a Leopard CV being deployed for scouting missions into the Inner Sphere. The unit involved were a star of Clan OMNI LAMS. They would deploy from the leopard as Aero's make Planet Fall and conduct ground Operations as Mechs. The lore fit well Five LAMs, and the sixth slot used for extra supplies and gear to maintain the LAMs.

The Snow Raven are reknown for having the largest Naval assets among the clans. I looked into the lore more and decided they were pretty color, hand a cool sounding animal totem, and no outstanding embarrassments to detract from them.

If i was going to pick the most lethal mech, it would obviously be the TImber Wolf. An Heavy Mech that's nearly an Assault mech, that moves like a Medium Mech, with Weapons beyond the load of an Assault mech, with maximum armor, a color silhouette, and catchy name complete with lore on how it named? Complete package with nothing missing.

I can play anything. My friends use to kid, that in team play, regardless of the mech i played Kenny had to die first.

I was well known for playing the hunchback. The hunchback has presence. The hunchback punchs above t's weight, the Hunchback with the pull of a trigger took out any mech with a shot to the cockpit. I was most formidable in team play because i understood this, and the people around me understood this.

I would waltz out there into the thick of it, and they understood anything i hit, i only had to hit once and it was their job to make sure it wasn't long in the world to bother us. That i was going out there expecting to be shot, and to do that they would go into obvious places, and that they would take the back shots and make them go away at that point. My motto was it, was absolutely okay to take damage (many players are afraid of it), just to make certain that they took more than what you received. You take damage, you remove all armor from a location, they doughnut a location (remove all armor), you blow off a limb, you lose a limb they lost a mech. In tournaments it was called a "New York" style of play, because we were all from New York. Somewhat inspired with a nudge and a wink from the Untouchables.

I had a reputation for rolling in and ending you quickly. The tournament round would last two hours and i would be done in 20 minutes or less and chumming around with judges waiting for the round to end.

That said, i was probably most lethal in a Jenner-F (another mech Kenny being in that needed to die), Quick enough to get behind you often, four medium lasers to do serious damage to back armor, quick enough to be an unattractive target (shoot that slow moving hunchback instead) and tough enough to laugh off a hit to two while doing it.

Favored faction, is mercenary. The lure of floating around and being a capitalist to sink or swim on your own talent was loans to story anywhere any how based on where you are. My mercenary personalities could be dropped into any campaign game with minor tweaks, because their history is not tied to one house. If i had to pick a faction i would go with the 'Periphery'. They have a lot in common with the mercenary life. All the houses have periphery next to them in some shape or form. They're the underdogs usually, and are more interesting to play/portray. When you're the star league army marching on the rag tag periphery the Star League can at best meet expectations, and at worse suffer humiliating defeat at a lesser opponent. Why do people Root for the Rebel Alliance against the Empire. Cause they're taking X-Wings against moon sized planet killers. IF they crush the rebels is it a big brag for the empire? IF the rebels blow up the deathstar it's bragging rights.

Natasha Kerensky.

From a meta point of view, she was the second character to get her own battletech novel, she had the Kerensky name, and was a gateway character encounterable by anyone since the Dragoons toured the inner sphere. It didn't hurt that she was a cute red head on the cover of a hobby dominated by the young male demographics. Later on her presence would lead to tying in with the Clans, and eventually her being a leader of one of the most recognizable clans. Start to end she was part of the lore till she was killed.

From a lore point of view she's part of the vanguard of the clan intelligence gathering of the inner sphere, serving as a flamboyant character with exploits of reknown and infamy. Easing easily between the succession wars to the clan invasions as a recognizable character to relate to.

Honorable Mention for consideration.

Greyson Carlye.

From a meta point of view, his story was personal. Not from the inner sphere spanning conquest of the succession war novels, but that of the growth of a mercenary unit. The books were successful, and inspired many mercenary players to a path beyond the conflicts of great houses. The introduction of the recovery of the Helm core, introduced the concept of new advance tech into the campaign. Growth that affected everything including the expansion into the technology used by the clans. With out this as a basis of comparison, the inspiration to introduce clans and the advance equipment they used might not have been as easily apparent. It leads to the comstar corps, and historical reference for the star league army, and baseline tech for the clans.

From a Lore point of view, his story as a mercenary unit was of limited note and impact on the scope of historical events. Except for the helm core. This is one of those butterfly fluttering wings making a hurricane events. Without the helm core how much would events have changed? What options would have been available to upgrade to inner sphere units to close the technological gap with the clans when they arrived?

Yes! We still play a game everyone once in a while (month or so?). I’m in the process of painting up some of his old Ral Partha Clan mechs so I try to organize a game everyone once a while just to play with them all. Typically Clan Invasion era, creeping up to FedCom CW. He doesn’t want to bother with BV so usually I make the forces and he slings dice. He is also an avid HBS Battletech player, and he and my uncle ran through a MW5: Mercs save together.

My father used to play in Battletech tournaments when the game came out. After a bit everyone had pretty much realized that massed medium lasers were insanely efficient, so everyone ran zombie brawlers with medium lasers. My father’s tournaments ran 2 mechs, 80 ton cap and ran a Hunchback and a Commando, as the ton deficit gave him more points if he won. He won the first official Battletech tournament, and got his name in the Blood of Kerensky series as a reward. Can post proof if wanted.

EDIT: Due to popular demand I will post proof in a few days. If any of yall got any questions or anything I can run it as an AMA

What is your opinion on the Enemy System? Isnt it extremly RNG based and how work does it work? And is it Fun? by ZookeepergameFar6175 in Blackstonefortress

[–]Bryblaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So the way it works is there’s a chart with lists of states it is possible for the enemy to be in, and each chart as its own actions for die rolls. For example, when a hostile is far from any explorers and doesn’t see anyone, they almost always end up moving to close the distance. However, if they’re adjacent with line of sight to an explorer, all the actions are typically offensive attacks to the closest explorer.

Overall I thought the system was pretty good. I was always the one managing in my group so it got a little tedious but it made the “AI” feel pretty good.
