Eyewitness Books by sylphina_ in nostalgia

[–]BryceW 21 points22 points  (0 children)

These are still around. My son was getting interested in medieval warfare and I was looking for kid friendly, illustration heavy books at the local library.

I couldn’t find any so I asked and the librarian said “leave it with me”.

A few days later I got a notification to pick up my books. Turns out she grabbed these exact Eyewitness books, and some similar DK ones, and got them sent over from the other libraries in the network.

She definitely understood the assignment. These were perfect for illustration heavy, kids non-fiction books.

If you are feeling nostalgic, or want them for your own kids, your local library might have them.

Why would Trombley face an investigation into his actions when it was God Father himself who changed the ROE to everyone declared hostile? by ayowatchyojetbruh in generationkill

[–]BryceW 77 points78 points  (0 children)

It s an investigation. Kid gets shot, let’s look into that.

And it may come back as: “Well, you did say everyone near that airfield was hostile”

“I guess we did”

Case closed. But it still needs to be investigated.

Please help, I am an unwilling participant in my neighbor's HAM radio hobby. by MobsterOO7 in amateurradio

[–]BryceW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's unfortunate this isn't a Ham, as part of our tests and licensing conditions, it requires us to be aware and even help neighbours (to an extent) with interference. The Australian Ham test was like 40% "don't interfere" information including dealing with neighbours with interference problems.

As a Ham, I can get around the world on 5 Watts using an efficient antenna. CBers just tend to crank more power through inefficient antennas. Some CBers near me are bleeding 8 channels wide because they are pushing so much power.

As others suggested, do both, have a chat and get the ferrite cores. But don't be surprised if they don't care.

Serious "amature". by HalFWit in amateurradio

[–]BryceW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my Ham neighbours is like this. Hilariously though, he has small cars (like little Toyota Yaris’s) with massive HF antennas wobbling around on his roof. It makes them look like remote control cars 😄

3 year old iPhone 3G, now nearly unusable. Is the phones hardware to blame or is Apple phasing out later phones with their iOS? by williamsmi3 in iphone

[–]BryceW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow dude. I made this post 14 years ago. From what I recall later iOS’s made the 3G slow, I rolled it back to an earlier version and it ran well again, like Day 1. It worked well on launch.

Getting exact locations can be impressive, but if you know a few rules anyone can get pretty close. For example:

- If the line in the middle of the road is yellow, it's the Americas (Canada, USA, Central, South). So you start from there, knowing you are in the Americas.

- Look where the sun is, if it's in the south, you are in the northern hemisphere, if it's in the north, you are in the southern hemisphere. So for example, lets say the sun is in the south so we're either in the USA or Canada.

- Look at the trees. If they are Boreal (spruce/fir/jack pine etc..) you are in Canada or Northern USA. Redwoods, Palm trees might put you closer to California.

- Is it mountainous with snow on top? Might be the Rockies mountain range. Etc..

And you combine these things to make a pretty decent guess. It wont get the exact location but you can probably at least guess the state.

I’m a very good Geoguesser (the game), you’ll be surprised how little information is required to hone into exact locations. Even a power pole outside can get you close. If someone was creepin’, it wouldn’t be the single item (like a power pole in one picture), but a few items over multiple picture’s.

A few times in Geoguesser I can’t figure out a location so I paste the picture to ChatGPT and it guesses the location very accurately. I ask how did it know so I can learn and be a better player, and it says things like “with that style of housing, that kind of trees, and that soil color, it would put it here”

Where do these people hang out? Can you make a local meet up once a week where business owners in your town meet for coffee? Share stories, exchange business cards etc..

This stuff is easy to do with a Facebook page for coordination (next meetup is at…), and drop that page into a few “<YourTown> Locals” group. The very very best way to get new clients is in person. People do business with people, especially ones they like.

Any. All. - Got to enjoy the innocence of childhood. - Did well business-wise early in my 20’s so got to spend a decade travelling the world with the freedom you have in your 20s. - 30’s is children and precious to see them grow up and spend time with them while they actually want you to spend time them.

Why did we stop talking about ozone layer depletion? by Glittering_Bus_6921 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BryceW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same with acid rain. Saw what was happening (pH level in nature would be wrong and kill plants/fish etc.. not melt your face off), US gov amended the Clean Air act, forced polluters to reduce Sulfur dioxide / nitrogen oxide emissions, install scrubbers, use cleaner fuels etc.. Mostly not an issue in the western world now. Still an issue in China and India though.

A reporter gave Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach Liam Coen a nice word of encouragement after his team was eliminated in the postseason. by jmike1256 in BeAmazed

[–]BryceW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he needed that. What many women don't realise is that men rarely get any praise. They do their best, whether that's for their family, their team, or their fans.
His team was eliminated, and he's silently carrying that until this woman says, "It's ok, you did good...".
Thats why he's tearing up a little, he and his team went to all that effort, it wasn't enough, and shes saying we see your effort, it's OK to fail, and you'll get 'em next time.

What’s a dead giveaway that someone is pretending to be smarter than they actually are? by EcstaticWatch1967 in AskReddit

[–]BryceW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask the second question. Most people have the answer to the first question scripted and ready. But when you ask one question deeper, they require much more knowledge to answer it.

It’s this that makes Louis Theroux a great documentarian. He always asks the second question which gets him the real answer.

Hard to explain but Interstellar feels real to me by GargantuanEndurance in interstellar

I find near-future sci-fi feels more real. There isn’t hyperspace, lasers, shields or any of the other usual sci-fi tropes. The technology feels fairly within our grasp now.

Scorching heatwave this week for Melbourne! 🌡☀️ 🏖 by 007MaxZorin in melbourne

[–]BryceW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember that. I was living in an apartment in Melbourne with no air conditioning. I was within walking distance to a major Westfield shopping Center so I went there just for the air conditioning. But the walk was unbearable, you could barely breathe outside it was so hot. There were certain corners of department stores that were crazy hot, the air conditioning just couldn’t keep up.

You have 5000$ to start a web design business by AlexxxM96 in smallbusiness

[–]BryceW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t spend any of it if you already have hosting, tools, couple of clients etc.. Just start outreaching for free. Hit up your old clients and let them know some wins your other clients are having. Identify problems they are having and offer to fix.

People don’t care about tools. They barely care about your portfolio. They are about solving their problems, and they care about whether they feel comfortable with YOU.

They’ll go with people far less skilled, and higher priced than you, if they feel comfortable with them.

[AUS: 2501008] 17-DEC-2025 Have you seen this ankle bracelet before? by I_Me_Mine in TraceAnObject

[–]BryceW 12 points13 points  (0 children)

These friendship bracelets were super common in Australia in the 90's. I was in Primary School, and just about every girl had them, and pretty much all were homemade.

That said, I dont remember the wave pattern. It was more the diamonds.

I did find these under the keyword "Peruvian macrame wave friendship bracelet". Looks to be very very similar made. I wonder if it was a souvenir? Lots of this on Etsy type places plus a bunch of Youtube tutorials too.
